Hmmm. half-decent stuff?

I guess I'd probably get more of a turn-around for the Ampeg?

FunkMetalBass 10-26-2010 03:06 PM

I wouldn't know what to charge on the ToneWorks, but "Ampeg" is a name brand that holds its value fairly well.

Got any pics of the ToneWorks? I can ask on TB.

FlamingCouch 10-26-2010 03:09 PM

I'll have pics up tomorrow. I definitely realize the value holding and such with the Ampeg. I just don't know if I want to sell it.

"Hand-made in USA. Concept & Design - BK Butler"

There's a switch that toggles between Tube and F.E.T., whatever that means.

The model is RT-3300.

FlamingCouch 10-26-2010 06:25 PM

So from googling it looks like a custom amp, head and a cab put together.

so I wonder if it's tubes, or a solid state head? and now if it makes more sense to sell the Ampeg or this one.

Sablate McNuff 10-26-2010 11:53 PM

I'm pretty sure it's an SS head with a tube preamp.

ninjaEdit: "F.E.T. or TUBE preamp operation. For those perfectionists who savor the warmth of tubes, this amp will satisfy you fully. For the ultimate in clean, punchy and accurate bass sound production, the alternative F.E.T. preamp stage is also available."

FWIW, "FET" is short for field-effect transistor, aka, an amplifier.

As far as which one you should sell, play them both and decide which you like better. From the tube options & 2-ohm functionality, I'd save the TW and sell the Ampeg. However, I don't have enough experience with either to really make that judgment call.

I have played both rather extensively and like the two of them equally... although odds are good I won't just pick up a TubeWorks as easily as another Ampeg. might make more sense to sell the Ampeg in that case. Either way, I've got a guy lined up who wants to buy a bass and amp from me depending on whichever one he likes more, so we'll see what happens. Many thanks for the input, Sir.

Spaceman Spiff 10-28-2010 04:36 PM

Hooray! Our album is out and we've got a handful of shows lined up. Everything's comin' up H!

Opening? headlining?

There are a couple that we've booked and are organizing, so I guess that would probably make us headliners?
Then a couple more that we've been asked to play. One is an opening slot, the other is kind of headliner-ish... we're the 3rd of 4 bands playing.

FlamingCouch 10-28-2010 05:53 PM

Right on man, good to hear. How soon?

Did you listen to any of my youtube poop yet?

And we might have one on Nov. 11.

I checked out some of it, yeah. I can't remember song names, but I really liked a couple of them. It didn't totally grab me, but I enjoyed it. The Fugazi cover was pretty sweet.

FunkMetalBass 10-29-2010 04:01 PM

Eff yeah, my new pickup should be here sometime next week.

FunkMetalBass 11-01-2010 09:48 AM

Well, I bought myself a Blue Encore 200 mic.

Looking at the charts:

It's similar to the SM58 with respect to the low end presence. I just sold off my M-Audio USB interface, so I wont be able to record with it until I find a decent firewire interface and buy it. I'll test it through my PA tonight, though. It gets some decent reviews, it's a Blue product, and it was cheaper than a 58. Swizzle!

fatbandit 11-01-2010 09:51 AM

using it for vocals or bass?

Vocals.

fatbandit 11-01-2010 04:16 PM

Do you happen to know what mic has the most ridiculously good feedback rejection for live use? Quiet stage volume is killing me, and I have quite a trebly sensitive vocal mic :(

Not at all, but Joel might.

From what I've learned in all my rehearsal vocal issues it's that you can't hear yourself well enough in the monitors, forcing you to turn up the gain/volume and therefore get feedback. If you can raise the monitor up closer to your ear, you can generally escape the issue.

Also, a noise gate might help.

Jimbobntnr 11-01-2010 04:42 PM

really can't go wrong with an SM 58

fatbandit 11-01-2010 04:54 PM

I'm not really a 58 fan for my voice, but I'm not sure why :/ I'm not picky enough that I won't use one. It's probably what my singing is always through at shows if I don't have my own mic, but if I can find something I like better, I'll go with it.

To be honest, I don't use stage monitors at all. I prefer them to be turned off unless we're playing bigger shows. Because of the occlusal effect, I can hear my voice echoing round my skull when I sing anyway, and it blocks out the monitors pretty much. And bass through monitors sounds absolutely poop. If it's a big/loud enough show, I like a bit of kick/snare/hi-hats (if the hats are mic'd anyway) through the monitor but that's it.

Tell the sound guy to stop running your bass through the monitors.

Convectuoso 11-01-2010 06:47 PM

If you don't sound good through a 58, you never will ;)

BenJammin 11-01-2010 07:33 PM

We got a Shure Beta 58A recently. It sounds awesome... way better than the POS mic we had going before (which is now being used as the backup vocals mic, sigh).

FunkMetalBass 11-02-2010 07:41 AM

Joel, how to vocalists keep that low-end punch when screaming and getting really loud? If I stay close to the mic for proximity, I clip the signal. If I step away, it sounds like my balls are being stepped on.

fatbandit 11-02-2010 10:52 AM

Loads of people don't actually scream very loud, but cup the mic to give loads of low end. It's a horrible technique though and doesn't translate well to recording.

That seems so counter-intuitive to me. I can't actually scream, but making my voice raspy/grungy definitely requires a bit of a volume boost to stay controlled.

I also tend to sing loudly anyway. It's all my years of learning to project.
