Deconstruction 03-04-2006 07:21 PM
Meh...when it comes to concept albums, it all comes down to 'The Wall.'

The Wall > Tommy
I think the movie "The Wall" is better also.
What a brilliant but strange movie...Watched it last last night...I love it

Riva 03-04-2006 07:42 PM

The Wake Of Magellan is my current favourite, I'm afraid.

BigTrav415 03-04-2006 08:29 PM

The Wall isn't my favorite Floyd album definitely, the concept is really good and Water's songwriting is awesome, but it's way too depressing for me. I like music that doesn't make you want to kill yourself. The movie is also wonderfully made but too dark and depressing, and even too wierd for me. I can't believe it was so popular back when it came out honestly, I guess everyone just wanted to see ABitW pt. II

/snobby elitism again

I guess I personally am just a Mason fanboy in a way :-/ I can't think of a better drummer for Floyd, I really like his "tone" I guess, I don't know. I guess my love for all things Floyd really really biases me though

DeusExMachina 03-04-2006 09:51 PM

Hey all, long time no... talk?

Has anyone heard Ca Ira yet? I'm thinking about picking up, but I'm worried it will suck.

Yeah, so am I. Waters' is a great songwriter, but I dunno if he can tackle a full opera.

BigTrav415 03-04-2006 09:54 PM

DeusExMachina!

/cums pants

How's it hanging good buddy? I'm not gonna worry about Ca Ira, it's a Waters-written opera, neither which I'm very fond of at the moment. Not to mention it's about France :-/ Smelly Frenchies with their cheese and whine lol see how I made a funny right there?

What do you think about Mason? You think he's good, right?
Right???

DeusExMachina 03-04-2006 10:00 PM

Hahaha. Well, I'm not a drummer and hence have no actual authority to pass judgment, but I do think Mason is a good drummer. I like the footage of him from LAP.

BigTrav415 03-04-2006 10:15 PM

I need to get the whole DVD of LAP, all I have is Echoes pts. 1 & 2 and One Of These Days on my computer.

More is a really good album. Just putting that out there for discussion.

Album-wise, Tommy defeats The Wall by a longshot.

Movie wise, The Wall was more well done, I'll give you that.

Hey Deus, long time no see. Or post. Whatever.
And no, there was in event that turned him deaf, dumb, and blind. Or so we think.
He witnessed his father killing the lover of his mother, then the repetitive "You didn't see it, hear it etc" made kind of like a curse... if that makes sense.

/agrees about blaming Townshend
Has anyone heard Ca Ira yet? I'm thinking about picking up, but I'm worried it will suck.
My friend Derek has it. I'll ask him to upload it later. Or, I'll do it for him seeing as I'm going to his house tomorrow for practice. He said it's pretty good, but far fetched seeing as it's opera and Waters.

Glitterati 03-04-2006 11:50 PM

Mason....I'd say he's competent. He's a good enough drummer, but nothing to really write home about.

BigTrav415 03-05-2006 01:44 AM

I never said he was amazing, but I think he is really overlooked as a member of the band, as many drummers are. Plus, Mason needs love every once in a while in the PF thread :p

Now to Rick Wright... he's really good at piano/keys/engineering, amiwright?

Mr. Black 03-05-2006 04:12 AM

I think Mason was a pretty good drummer. some of his Drum lines are quite complicated.

Riva 03-05-2006 04:16 AM

Mason has a devastating growl.

*listens to One Of These Days*

Mr. Black 03-05-2006 04:56 AM

Is that Mason that says that?

rippa32 03-05-2006 05:30 AM

I listen to Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, and I love the drums for that. Not overly technical but sound great.

On another note I finally got Animals today after putting it off for a long time. I was seriously missing out. My question is does anyone know who sang what on the album? To my ears Gilmour sang the lot except the two Pig On The Wing ones which were sung by Waters. Can anyone confirm that?

magicbus 03-05-2006 11:19 AM
Is that Mason that says that?
Yes it is.

I think Mason's alright, nothing special though. He's good for Floyd's music, because insane drums with crazy flourishes and other stuff wouldn't fit the mellow style very much.

Led-ZeppelinIV 03-05-2006 11:48 AM

I like the movie Tommy, I've never seen the wall.

And Cymbaline>The Nile Song

And would anybody be interested in a "who has the most Floyd on their computer" competition?

magicbus 03-05-2006 12:40 PM

I have 303 Floyd songs, which equals about 2.3 GB.

I'm not really a big "Cymbaline" fan at all. "Cirrus Minor" beats out both of those songs.

I suppose you could call it that. He actually recorded it normally, just talking into a microphone, and they slowed it down to give it that effect.

The two Pigs On The Wings were sung by Waters, as well as Pigs, Sheep, and most of Dogs. On Dogs at the beginning they have a part where it's two dogs talking, Gilmour is the older wiser dog, and Waters is the other one.

DeusExMachina 03-05-2006 01:43 PM

What is the other thing Mason said again? I know he says "one of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces," but there's another comment layered with it, and I don't recall what it is, and I'm too into my current music to change and find out at the moment.

robo2448 03-05-2006 02:08 PM

I have 238 Floyd songs. Quite a lot but I'm owned by Bus.

Waters sings the majority of Animals.

And I remember that Mason says something else. I remember listening to One of These Days on headphones, and there's a different message in each ear. But I forget what the other one is.

Led-ZeppelinIV 03-05-2006 02:18 PM

I only have 107 Floyd Songs, mostly because I haven't bothered listening to most later floyd, in fact I think Animals is pretty weak.

rbv 03-05-2006 02:40 PM

So I downloaded David Gilmour's new album, but I'm sure at least some of you already did. I like it personally, though the title track and the music video isn't that good.

I also have 303 Floyd songs. Crazy. Only it comes to about 2.6 GB on my computer.

BigTrav415 03-05-2006 04:01 PM

In one channel of One Of These Days it says "One of these days, I'm going to cut you into little pieces", while the other channel says "One of these days, I'm going to dance with the evil beast". There is some debate about it saying "One of these days, I'm going to drop from the human species" as well. Awesome either way :)

I think Schyma has gone clinically insane.

No, there is definitely a difference in the two channels. It's debatable what is actually the difference betwen the two, but if you isolate the two channels, you can hear a clear difference. Trust me, try it. Listen to one headphone alone, and then the other alone. It's wierd.

Erotomania 03-05-2006 05:35 PM

Im gonna do some blades and get totally ripped and then listen to pink floyd!!:)
