Is No Amity? 03-15-2006 11:06 PM

I listened to "The String Cheese Incident" the other day. I'm not sure I'm quite ready for them. I have to slowly build up listening to that stuff. Right now I'm just at sh*t like DMB and Ben Harper.

I highly suggest you keep trying to get into SCI, maybe get some live stuff since that's where they shine (like most jam bands.)

robo2448 03-16-2006 05:58 PM

SCI are pretty cool. I have Born on the Wrong Planet which is great and some live stuff which is kind of hit or miss. A few inconsistent songs but some performances are great. I honestly think they're a little overrated, but they're still good.

I got tickets to see Tea Leaf Green again on April 22 cause they'll be back here. They were so awesome last Friday I had to get tickets to see them again. Can't wait. Animosity, I think you might actually dig these guys. You can download some of their stuff off the archive or nugs.

What exactly is a "jam band"

Saosin labels themselves as a jam band on there PV site, so I was j/w.

Saosin=Best band ever.

jpj 03-16-2006 06:18 PM

I'd try to explain, but I'm lazy and Badmoon can do it much better anyway.

Let's just hope he pops his filthy hippie head in here.

per Wikipedia:
The term jam band is commonly used to describe psychedelic rock-influenced bands whose concerts largely consist of bands reinterpreting their songs as springboards into extended improvisational pieces of music. The term less describes a set genre of music than it does provide a label for vastly different bands for whom the only link to each other is this improvisation.

Anyone looking for a show recommendation, I suggest you check out the show 2006-01-25 Greyspoke Variety at Nectars. The Pale is out of this world, and the sound quality is excellent for once.

I'd also suggest The Breakfast, Raq, String Cheese, Yonder Mountain String band, and Robert Randolph and the Family Band.
all of which can be found at archive.org/audio

TLG rocks my socks off.

I ordered 'Taught To Be Proud' by Tea Leaf Green off of Amazon.com, but I'm not going to have it by this weekend and I think I'm going on a long drive to visit some schools. Is there a chance someone could hook a brotha up? It's ridiculously good and I'd love to have it for the drive.

Of course, I'll give something back in return. I'm arsonmadeeasy on AIM and piratesatellite on soulseek.

CardCheat 03-23-2006 08:22 PM

This is a stupid question, but what exactly is a Jam band? Is it as obvious as...a band that jams?

well damn I could have just looked at the top of this page

Badmoon 03-23-2006 08:32 PM

^Not really
The term jam band is commonly used to describe psychedelic rock-influenced bands
I'd say that's wrong.

jpj 03-24-2006 02:59 PM

Some jam bands occasionally explore psychedelic areas while jamming, but they seem to more commonly draw their influences from roots genres and jazz.

robo2448 03-24-2006 04:59 PM

I think the great thing about jam bands is how diverse they are. You have psychedelic jam bands, blues jam bands, folk jam bands, bluegrass jam bands, jazz jam bands... and a lot of jam bands take many different styles of music and fuse it together to create a unique sound.

I don't have Taught to Be Proud yet. But you could always just get a bunch of their stuff off of http://www.archive.org which is what I do. But I'm actually about to go to the cd store, and if they have it (probably now), I'll probably get it and then I could hook you up. But yeah, the chances of that happening are pretty slim. I've been listening to so much live TLG stuff. They've dominated my last.fm 3 weeks in a row.

KMidura 03-25-2006 12:42 AM

Badmoon, you're in Chicago right? What's Martyrs like? I'm going to see Raq there in early April, and am curious as to what the venue's like.

robo2448 03-25-2006 08:34 AM

Man, there are so many freaking concerts here the weekend 4/21-4/23. First of all, 4/20 is a pretty special day in the jam band world, so there a bunch of shows then. Particle is here 4/21, and I already have tickets to TLG for 4/22. And Thursday night is the jammys, which will have a tribute to Frank Zappa plus performances by moe., Little Feat, Bela Fleck, Blues Traveler, Richie Havens, and a bunch of other bands I'm too lazy to list. Now there's no way in hell my parents will let me go to this on a Thursday night, but it would be really freaking sweet if they did.

Plus, all weekend there's the Green Apple Music Festival to celebrate Earth Day but you have to buy tickets separately for each band, not one ticket for the whole thing.

I already have tickets to TLG, and I probably won't be able to go to more than one show in one weekend, but maybe I can convince my parents to let me go to Blues Traveler or Particle too.

Guys, http://www.jambase.com/headsup.asp?storyID=8179

At the bottom of the article, click the Warmup> Freedom link to see a video of a TLG performance. Freedom owns.

tru

I think most jam bands are like.. jammy. They play as they go, and they make/change songs as they play with each other and kind of see what fits.

KMidura 03-31-2006 12:46 PM

Anyone in the Chicago area should check out Raq when they play at Martyr's on the 7th and 8th

wanton 04-07-2006 12:29 PM

I got Tea Leaf Green's ablum Taught to be Proud and can send it if anyone wants a listen.

Anyone heard any Umphrees Mcgee?

They're fricking amazing

jpj 04-08-2006 11:06 PM

I like them. They're a really fun band.

jpj 04-10-2006 05:59 PM

So moe. is coming to Pittsburgh on June 11th, and they're playing for free :D

Broken Arrow 04-10-2006 07:37 PM

Psh, all my moe. got deleted for some reason. :(

32 Things was a great song.

They're playing here with moe. on May 30th. I will be there.

It's going to be hot as hell, as well as an outdoor show.

Umphrey's is playin' from 6:30 - 8:30, and I think moe. from 8:30 - 10:30 or something.

KMidura 04-11-2006 11:14 PM

I like Umphrey's way more than I like Moe. Not that it really matters, just thought I'd thow it out there.

I did see Moe open for the Allmans this summer at SPAC, and wasn't overly impressed.
