Man Cynic have gone soft. I suppose I wouldn't expect much else from them. It's all well played and not very different from Focus, but it's softer. Closer to pop music than death metal.

Nah not pop, yeah it's not death metal but it's more progressive rock with some metal elements I'd say.

Yeah I don't want to sound like something's got to be heavy to be good, but I struggle to tolerate jazzy death metal unless the jazz isn't so prevalent. Hence, Atheist>Cynic. But this goes further down the jazzy route so it's not for me.

Oh yeah, for sure. I actually quite like the new direction. Paul's enhanced vocals sound much better now that they're more revolved around vocal melodies and less enhancement.

production on those songs kills it

First song is infinitely better than the next two. Don't know why the 'lack of metal' is any surprise because Focus was hardly metal anyways.

it's no surprise, but I enjoy focus to a certain extent, but not this stuff....it's 'crossed the line' so to speak

Been listening to the album a lot. I think I'm going to buy Blessed Are the Sick this weekend. Should I expect more goodness?

It's not as good. A little bit bland and certainly not as thrashy. It's grown on me over time, but I don't like it nearly as much as Altars, and probably not as much as Covenant.

It's the last worthwhile MA album.

Too bad the Decide album sucks.

Anyway, Altars, Blessed, and Abominations are the only Morbid Angel stuff worth hearing. The old demos and live stuff are worth tracking down too.

Blessed is decent but the production's kind of hollow sounding; less thrashy than Altars but could be heavier too.

Covenant is definitely worth listening to. The only thing I don't like is the flanger effect on the guitars in most the songs.
