I watched Lamentations again today and I really think they should have played Demon of the Fall instead of A Fair Judgement. The whole croud was screaming for it, it just would have made the ending alot better.
The whole point of that tour was that they were only playing Damnation/Deliverance material.

They still could of threw it in there in there. Its a pretty short song.

JamJar 04-27-2006 12:32 AM

By Opeth's standards, Demon Of The Fall is short.

I intend to buy Lamentations when I have enough cash and I really wish that there was material from Still Life and MAYH. Damn you copy right laws etc.
Last night was one of the best nights of my life.Easily the best show ive been to.I was very happy with the setlist, mainly cos they played The Lepper Affinity which i was praying they play.I recorded the whole concert on a tape voice recorder. The quality is fairly **** in the distorted sections, but sounds reasonable in the soft parts and while mike is talking between songs. It will just good to go back and listen to it.

More funny stuff:

Mike to the crowd after the first song "Shh,Shh....Shut up"

"I love this country,i had my honeymoon here.Ive been ****ing in this country......and even got blow jobs too".

"People has this big perception that everyone in Sweeden just **** all the time and all the chicks have blonde hair and big tits.......Its true!"

Theres more i will put up later.

I waited around after and the band pulled out of the car park thing in front of us, i was hoping they would stop to sing **** but the just waved and kept going. So that was a little annoying.Overall though,an amazing night.Imo the best song live was White Cluster. It blew me away and will now be one of my favourite songs from them.
Mm yes I didn't like the set list too much but it was one of the best nights of my life. It annoys me how short Opeth set lists are, I often think it lazy. I think Opeth could be more caring of their fans but I think they have this rock star image with themselves now. I mean 8 songs, common who can do more.
If it was the biggest show they had ever played to you think they might have being a little more caring.
I know i'm going to get flamed to the sh*ts for this, but Mike's clean vocals last night were terrible, i'm not sure if it was a tech issue, but they sounded all nasal and at times, chipmunk-ish, it ruined a lot of clean parts for me. I was really dissapointed in the setlist, as i mentioned above, because they only really displayed one side of their music, and as we all know, Opeth is a 2-sided band. My favourite song of the night was either The amen corner or Under a weeping moon. They also focused a lot more on a psychadelic kind of aspect of their music, using a fair amount of wah and relying on keyboards in some of the older songs, which kinda missed the point for me.
WHAT!, his vocals were perfect.

I didn't really know the fuss about Mendez until the concert night. He was amazing, his bass fills were aubile and clear as crystal, his headbanging rocks just overall great musicanship. Very tight, and had a great bass tone.

Who is their stand in drummer. He is a f-ing gun.
Who is their stand in drummer. He is a f-ing gun.
Probably still Martin Axenrot. And they played for over an hour, how is that not caring?

Slapping Penguin 04-27-2006 02:04 AM

You can do more.

What is with Opeth and Martins....

Dude, the show was just about two hours long.Thats the standard length,if not longer for most concerts. They played nine songs too,not eight.Well actually ten if you include the Deep Purple song.So thought it was a pretty good length.

Slapping Penguin 04-27-2006 02:24 AM

I didn't include the encore on purpose. 20 mins was wasted on waiting for an encore.

Still Life 04-27-2006 02:30 AM

The Sydney show was ****ing awesome. The Eternal weren't bad either.

You seem like your pissed about the show or something.I recorded the whole show nad have listened to it.its was barely 5 minutes waiting for the encore.

dUSK 04-27-2006 02:44 AM
OPETH frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt has commented on the negative reaction to the remarks he made to Australia's Time Off magazine about the state of today's metal scene.

In an interview posted at TimeOff.com.au, Åkerfeldt is quoted as saying, "Most of the bands today, I don't really like them. When I grew up it was like heresy to compare KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and whatever you got going with MAIDEN and PRIEST. Especially in America, it seems to be a little trend goin'... it's corporate business. The bands feel manufactured, almost like boy bands with guitars. I don't want my bands to be ****ing pretty."

Writing to OPETH's official forum, Åkerfeldt defended his comments, stating, "The quote [published by Time Off magazine] is a bit misleading. I don't particulary like KILLSWITCH but have nothing against them really. All I was saying that I don't see the same quality in them as I do in PRIEST or MAIDEN. Partly because they were innovators and [KILLSWITCH ENGAGE] to me sounds like a rehashed version of what's been going on in Sweden for 16 years or more. Had you lived in Sweden, you'd share my opinion on that I'm pretty sure.

"Then the thing with the boy-band comment...was not addressed to [KILLSWITCH ENGAGE] but an observation of the overall 'nu' or whatever metalcore scene in the U.S. And here I stick to my guns... I will not deny anyone liking these bands and what the **** would they care what I think is good or bad anyways."

An hour later, Åkerfeldt — who is currently on tour in Australia — returned to the official OPETH forum to address the comments from BLABBERMOUTH.NET visitors regarding the above topic. He wrote, "Wow, just saw the Blabbermouth thing and it really escalated out of control there. All I can say is that the interview has mistakes. For one, I didn't compare [KILLSWITCH ENGAGE] to PRIEST when I was growing up as...well, they weren't around then. Blabber is also out for drama taking that line as the headlining quote.

"I hope people are smart enough to understand that there are U.S. bands that I completely adore...like NEVERMORE and TOOL. I was only talking about the so-called metalcore or nu metal scene and it looks as if I was bashing the whole of the U.S. metal scene.

"We're jealous? OK, whatever...

"Seems a lot of people won't allow me to have or express my taste in music anymore, so I guess I'll have to become a fan of whatever's selling to prove I'm not jealous.

"And I've met the guys in [KILLSWITCH ENGAGE] once and they seemed like nice dudes (not that pretty either), I'd never publicly bash a band that didn't deserve it. And is it an attack . . .by saying PRIEST and MAIDEN mean more to me than [KILLSWITCH ENGAGE]?

"All of you gotta understand that out of the zillion interviews I do, some will take the so called 'good stuff' and put it forward and make me seem like a prick."
Hahah nah thats cool,it did actually feel like an hour beofre they came to play Deliverance, but maybe that was cos i was just anxious, hoping that they would actually come back on.

The Sandman 04-27-2006 05:15 AM

Damn...I recently listened to the live version of A Fair Judgement on Lamentations and it's absolutely amazing.

It far exceeds the studio version imo.

Anyone else agree/disagree?

Thor 04-27-2006 06:36 AM

I finally watched the documentary on the Lamentations DVD all the way through, and it was very entertaining. It's always great to watch your favorite band play music, but even cooler when you see them warm up with riffs that you know. Like during the scene where Akerfeldt is helping Mendez remember a bass line and then I ended up shouting out "Hey! That's Deliverance!". :)

...the documentary also gave me much more respect for Steven Wilson. Sure, I knew that he was extremely talented, but I didn't know that he lots of Opeth's vocal arrangements. Listening to him add the keyboards, piano parts, guitar solos, vocals, and effects is just entertaining to watch and listen to. Long live Steven Wilson and Opeth!

/is listening to the vocal arrangement in "Master's Apprentices"

Jude 04-27-2006 06:42 AM

I love the acoustic part of Master's Apprentices.

And that whole thread on the Opeth forum about Mike allegedly insulting Killswitch was one of the stupidest things ever. People on that forum are ****in morons.

dUSK 04-27-2006 08:08 AM

Well, Opeth weren't the gods I was hoping they'd be, but they came damn close. Excellent show. The Deep Purple cover was cool.

The Eternal were a good opening act as well, although my mates seemed to dislike them.

If they weren't gods, then what did they do wrong?

dUSK 04-27-2006 08:27 AM

They didn't do anything wrong, which is why I said they came damn close and that it was an excellent show.

Perhaps I'm just a little dissappointed with the setlist (could have been slightly better, imo), or that I ended up stuck with a chick who wasn't enjoying herself for the majority of it. Maybe I just have my knickers in a twist because I've had 4 hours sleep in the last two days. Anyway, none of that stuff is even remotely Opeth's wrongdoing. I guess I just didn't enjoy myself as much as I thought I would have.

matt4 04-27-2006 08:32 AM

Dude, when I saw them in New Orleans, their setlist was AMAZING! They played In The Mist She Was Standing (Orchid), White Cluster (Still Life), April Ethereal (MAYH), and like a 15 minute version of Closure (Damnation). All sort of obscure songs compared to what everyone was expecting. Definitely didn't expect ANYTHING pre-MAYH. They played more songs, obviously; those are just the "obscure" ones that come to mind.

No Demon of the Fall; Deliverance was the encore. I guess if this had been my first show, I may be disappointed by that... What was your setlist like? It couldn't have been much different...

dUSK 04-27-2006 08:36 AM

Ghost of perdition
White cluster
The amen corner
The baying of the hounds
Closure
Under the weeping moon
The grand conjuration
The Leper affinity
----------------
Deep Purple - Soldier Of Fortune Cover
Deliverance

The set list was the same for every Aussie show, I think.

April Ethereal!?!?!?!?!

I just had an orgasm, seeing as how that's my favorite song off of MAYH.

Pretty good setlist, but where's the Morningrise?

Stoo 04-27-2006 10:05 AM

They never play Morningrise stuff?

Thor 04-27-2006 10:08 AM
They never play Morningrise stuff?
They'll play it occasionally, but not much at all, sadly. :upset:

They really need to start making To Bid You Farewell as their encore song because it would be truly epic to see live.

NP - Opeth - Ghost of Perdition

It would be. Even the title of the song fits perfectly as an encore song, so it puzzles me why they don't play it.

Excellent choice with Advent. Almost the entire Morningrise album is awesome, but Nectar tends to drag along in some parts.

Shadius 04-27-2006 11:36 AM
It would be. Even the title of the song fits perfectly as an encore song, so it puzzles me why they don't play it.
Being a death metal band, and having a lot of extreme metal fans, having a soft encore would be an anti-climax for a lot of people.

I wouldn't mind myself, but I totally see where they're coming from. Demon of the Fall would be an amazing encore for me anyway, and Deliverance would be cool.
