Because its a flower right :p

Anyway yeah I guess its abit more inaccesible, but it is still super good. I don't get what people don't like about it. It has all the perfect Opeth elements, without being over the top like some of the later releases. And anyone who doesn't like Still Life is just plain dumb.
I was talking about MAYH but whateva! lol. He beat me to a post.

Although, I would have made that joke... >_>

Apocalypticon 10-20-2006 06:01 PM

Lets just pretend you did make that joke. I see Orchid as a more inacessible album than MAYH but not by alot. All three of the early Opeth albums are kinda hard to get into, which would explain why so many people start with GR or BWP. Orchid seems to have alot of out of nowhere changes, which is nice cause it makes it unpredictable but can make it hard on first time listeners cause the music can be jumping all over the place. That doesn't so much happen with latter releases. You can usually get a feel for where the songs are gona go on BWP, Damnation etc.

BurningSky 10-20-2006 06:09 PM

So, let's see who has been an Opeth fan the longest. What album was their latest release when you became a fan..?

Blackwater Park was their latest release when I became a fan. I had downloaded a few songs in mid-2002. The first album I bought, though, was Deliverance, which I got as soon as it came out...

Stoo 10-20-2006 06:10 PM

This is a question for all in ye ole 'Peth thread;

If you had to pick group of 4...

Orchid / Morningrise / My Arms, You're Hearse / Deliverance.
OR
Still Life / Blackwater Park / Damnation / Ghost Reveries.

There is no reason for the order. >_>

I would pick No. 2 I think, mainly because of Still Life and BWP...

although my ultimate 4 would be Morningrise / MAYH / Still Life / BWP

I started downloading some songs about 2 months before Ghost Reveries came out. I hadn't been into metal long before that however. I only downloaded Black Rose Immortal and Bleak before deciding I'd buy all the albums. :p

Apocalypticon 10-20-2006 06:11 PM

Damnation was technically their most recent album when I started listening to them but I only started about 3 months before Ghost Reveries came out. My first album was BWP just like alot of people's.

EDIT: @Symbolic: First group easily.

BurningSky 10-20-2006 06:11 PM

The second group, definitely. Though Deliverance seems out of place in the first group...
The second group, definitely. Though Deliverance seems out of place in the first group...
I had 2 groups of 3 at first (leaving out D + D) but I thought I'd add them in. I put Deliverance with the old school 'Peth for some controversy :naughty:

You guys are all silly

Orchid > Still Life(tough choice though cause these are my two favourites)
Morningrise < Black Water Park(BWP is just better)
My Arms, Your Hearse > Damnation(no competition)
Delivernace > Ghost Reveries(another tough one since these are my least favourites)

Eliminator 10-20-2006 07:56 PM

I'm listening to Still Life atm.

Apocalypticon 10-20-2006 08:00 PM

Still Life has two of the most original and awesome Opeth songs of all time. The Moor and Benighted. Those two songs just make the album for me.

Eliminator 10-20-2006 08:51 PM

It gets kind of boring though. That doesn't happen with Blackwater Park though.
MAYH isn't as good as everyone makes it out to be. It is definately a good album, but like many Opeth albums abit overrated. It doesn't really stand up to Orchid or Still Life.
It's my third favorite Opeth album.

I used to have that exact background...at other points in time I also had the Still Life and BWP covers, but the best Opeth background I ever had was this one: http://www.truemetal.org/metalwallpaper/images/opethdeliverance.jpg

Eliminator 10-20-2006 09:42 PM

Yeah I think that's where I got my wallpaper too.

Jude 10-20-2006 09:52 PM

I became an Opeth fan shortly before Ghost Reveries was released, so Damnation era I guess. I got into them mainly because so many people on MX who liked the same bands as me were also whoring Opeth - but that wasn't the main reason because I'd previously downloaded some songs like BRI, TDF, BWP and DOTF and couldn't get over the growls, nor did I like the metal parts that much.
I think the real reason was because I found out Steven Wilson produced for them, so I thought there had to be SOMETHING to them. Someone tipped me off that Damnation was an all-mellow album so I checked that out and liked and bought it. A little later I downloaded the leak of Ghost Reveries and liked it, but then checked out their other stuff and found that I liked it a whole lot more.

Eliminator 10-20-2006 09:57 PM

My friend lent me Blackwater Park, Damnation, and Morningrise and I pretty much instantly like them.

I didn't buy BP until last winter, and it's basically my favorite metal album.

Thor 10-20-2006 10:37 PM

My new avatar = ultimate Opeth fanboyness :D

Still Life is by far my favorite metal album. Not that that's saying much, because I like probably about under 20 albums that could be considered metal. Let me see...

-Opeth's entire catalogue w/o Damnation = 7
-Rammstein's entire catalogue, although I don't like Herzeleid so much so = 3
-In Flames from Jester Race thru Clayman = 4
-Rage Against the Machine's s/t = 1
-Lateralus = 1

So yeah, 16.

Nice avatar Thor. Can you hook other people up with big avatars too or just get them yourself?

Thor 10-20-2006 11:19 PM

I do not have the authority to give big avatars. I am but a mere demi-mod.

Are Opeth any good live?

VomitStainedCretin 10-21-2006 07:17 AM
Are Opeth any good live?
They were very impressive at Download this year, even though hey only played 4 songs.

pate 10-21-2006 09:23 AM

Opeth are amazing live. I've seen them three times. Each time was goodness.

Eliminator 10-21-2006 09:51 AM

I need to see them live.

denboy 10-21-2006 10:33 AM

Opeth is known to be one of the best live bands out there now

Spoonful of Shame 10-21-2006 11:10 AM

damn right

Shattered_Future 10-21-2006 11:54 AM

Opeth is more than great live. Terrific experience that everyone should be aware of.

BurningSky 10-21-2006 11:58 AM

It depends on what you'd consider a good live show. Their sound is absolutely flawless, they have great presence, and Mikael is a stand-up comedian between songs. However, if you are looking for improv jams, Opeth will not have them. The songs will sound the exact same as the album, only louder. I think the real treat of the show is listening to Mikael, easily the most entertaining frontman I've ever experienced...

Shattered_Future 10-21-2006 12:00 PM

Hey now...what about Closure live, eh?

But you do have a point, they don't jam that much. And I like that just fine...there's nothing wrong with that.

beso negro 10-21-2006 12:14 PM
However, if you are looking for improv jams, Opeth will not have them. The songs will sound the exact same as the album, only louder.
This is why I don't like Opeth live as much as everyone else.

pate 10-21-2006 12:29 PM

Why would you want them to ruin their damn near perfect songs by jamming?

Apocalypticon 10-21-2006 12:35 PM
Why would you want them to ruin their damn near perfect songs by jamming?
I'm gonna have to second this, but that doesn't stop me from saying Opeth aren't all that great live. I think they are alot more of a band to be experienced at home. Alot of their songs aren't really designed to be played live and so just don't have the same impact live as they do through the stereo. That being said though there are also songs that just scream to be played live like Demon of the Fall, Deliverance and The Drapery Falls(just to name ones they actually play). But I also think they don't choose their sets to well, because there are songs like The Moor, In Mist She Was Standing and Advent that to me scream to be played live and Opeth just don't. They are really solid live though, no slip ups anywhere.

Apocalypticon 10-21-2006 12:44 PM

fixed

DaveTheAmazing 10-21-2006 02:13 PM

Im thinking of going to see them, I cant make up my mind tho. I'd love to hear Closure live.

Eliminator 10-21-2006 02:24 PM

"Blacwater Park" live would gouge out my eyes or something similar.

Txus 10-21-2006 02:46 PM

I would kill to see Bleak live.

Deth 10-21-2006 02:47 PM

It was funny at Gigantour watching people who obviously hadn't heard Opeth but wanted to mosh.

*hardcore dancing*
*acoustic break*
*look around confused*
