^Well I may catch a Bluegrass theory clinic and a Peter Rowan and Tony Rice concert.
awesome! i'm fairly sure we don't have theory clinics here, and Tony Rice has definitely never came here. are you guys having a good holiday? edit- here as in Regina, not Calgary. Calgary is way too big and confusing for me to know anything about it. |
Well obviously I do.
We really suck for concerts. :( edit: actually we're better than most places in Canada for concerts. |
i never knew you lived here!! that's cool. it's so huge compared to Regina, but the weather is so nice here. as we were driving from Regina, every couple hours we were able to take off another article of clothing, until i was just wearing my shirt. it was wonderful in the mall just wearing a shirt, without a sweater and then big jacket. this city rocks.
and do you know any good music/guitar stores? i'm going to look for a good place to look at guitars, and i wanna buy a new amp. |
If you've ever heard of The Old Town School of Folk Music (I think that's the name), go there. They're based here, but are spread out. They offer classes, clinics, workshops, and small concerts. There concert hall only fits about 1,000. So, it will surely be a great show, that is if I do go.

The only place I go for guitars is the Crowfoot NW guitarworks. That might be a little out of the way though :/
The only place I go for guitars is the Crowfoot NW guitarworks.
is it the best one? or is it just closer to you? since i dont know where i am, and i have a few days with nothing to do, i dont mind driving all over the city. i refuse to go back to regina without a marshall halfstack in my backseat. oh ya and i finished my Bob Dylan book already, i couldn't put it down. it was great, although i can really tell he hates being famous. He went into great detail about his Greenwhich Village club days, and then zipped forward to the early seventies for a while, then zipped forward to the late eighties. he only briefly touched upon the sixties, and the mid seventies where he came out with some good albums. but man is he great at writing books, i thought it was just songs he was good at. |
It's not the best but it's where I go for lessons and where I get my guitar stuff. Some stuff is overpriced but they have a lot of good prices too. They will let you play the guitars if you show an interest in buying something.
*I have no clue of any other guitar shops. It's just the closest to where I live. **That Bob Dylan book looks awesome. I want it more than ever now. |
Is it the memoirs?
I'm going to buy some CD's tommorow. I'm not sure what I should exactly get, but whatever. |
Buy
<---- |
I could get that used.
I am quite sure I'll get something from the following bands: Polyphonic Spree CCR |
I could get that used.

the book is weird because it's called Chronicles: Volume 1
i dunno how he plans on having more volumes, because he basically went over his whole life, unless he plans on writing a book about him writing chronicles. i felt bad for him at times, because he was, and only wanted to be, a musician. but people were trying to force him to be a political icon and protester. he was forced to stay inside his house all day because hoards of protesters were always outside his door trying to get him to lead them to Washington or something, and he just never wanted to. He said that went on for all of the sixties, and most of the seventies. and he actually tried doing stuff to wreck his career (pouring a bottle of whiskey over his head to look crazy, going to isreal or someplace and wearing a skullcap etc). he has some good stories though. he told a good one about one time when Bono came over for supper. edit- but yea, never once did he mention doing drugs, or recording any of his albums except the start of his first one, and one in the late eighties (dunno what its called). he left a lot of himself a secret. |
i got this guitar acoustic magazine with a good interview with paul mcartney. it was interesting how he said he never cared at all what equipment he was using, he just cared about the songs. he owned some gibsons and martins and guilds and other very high end guitars, but he always said he liked playing his epiphone the most. which i think is cool, because other guitarists you see only use like the most expensive guitar they can find, and then they buy tonnes of them. paul only used a few different guitars in his career.

In the Anthology Book, Paul mentions that even today, he alwyas feels like Fenders and such are out of reach. Even though he could buy the factory, he feels at odds purchasing such equipment. Btw, his Hofner bass is the sweetest. |
ya he said in the interview, that at a very young age his dad told him not to buy anything to expensive, because you will just end up in debt. even now that he's filthy rich, he's still stuck to that and he's really not sure why.

no... o.k. off topic: I heard the song Cotton Fields by CCR just recently and it's my new favorite CCR song. Then I was listenin to a Beach Boys CD and I found that they also did a version of this song. Who did this song originally? Is it just an old blues song? |
^ i will assume you are trying to talk to Bonzo. (to sixstring whatever it was)
so who are some of your favourite bands then? edit- and i dunno who sang that song originally, it's a great song though. whose version do you like more between CCR and Beach boys? |

Beach Boys is ok, but I crack up everytime I think of one of the Beach Boys anywhere near a cotton field. |
hahaha ya i never thought of that.
Surfin Cottonfields USA! |
CCR has more raw feeling and emotion, Beach Boys are more polished and packaged.
CCR would be better for the song definitely. |

most on here may beg to differ about your opinions. but i'm glad you included the Ventures, they are a great instrumental band, i've played a few of their songs for various concerts. |

I saw that Paul McCartney interview in the Acoustic Guitar magazine. I just read it in the store, no way I'm paying 6 bucks for a magazine.

Van Halen are the best!
Can anyone play eruption cos i nearly cracked it! :)
|
Yes. Eruption is fast but it's not all that hard. A good amount of time spent on it and I could have it down.
Eddie Van Halen's the man, I says. |
Do we have any Roky Erickson fans here?
I've heard some stuff from 13th Floor Elevator (His former band, I believe) and they have an interesting sound. And some great Psychedelic songs :thumb: |
OMG guys, AC/DC's Back In Black is a rip off of The Ocean!
|
Dude, freakin anyone who doesn't have The Last Waltz should go get it now OMGOMZG. Aright?
I'm gonna watch it again today, but I'm goin to the mall now to get some cds and maybe that Pink Floyd biography book. I listened to Fragile and it rules. I think I might get The Yes Album, but I definently have to pick up some cds by The Band. My dad already has Music From Big Pink, so I'll probably get the self titled Brown one. Later. EDIT: I got Saucerful of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Odyssey, but no cds until tomorrow when I use gift cards at Best Buy. |
Well, I've been reading my Jim Morrison biography all day.
/declares Tonight's the Night Neil's best album /leaves |
I have to get around to reading the Dylan autobiography, but I've been reading "Fargo Rock City" by Chuck Klosterman instead. It's not as good as his other book ("Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs") but it's still an interesting read nonetheless.
|
hmmmmmmm, thats a hard one.

Today I got JPJ-Zooma, Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade-Live Frogs Set 2(they cover all of Animals), Steve Miller-Fly Like An Eagle, Led Zeppelin-HTWWW(finally! and for only $12)
I was gonna get The Last Waltz but I didn't fell like spending $22 on one item. Also if there is anyone outnthere that doubts the powers of JPJ go buy Zooma. |
Alright I have that song and can send it to you on MSN because my AIM doesn't let me send files
