Could somebody please explain to me in detail what "Godspeed You! Black Emperor" is like?? And what their top albums are??

It'd be appreciated :)

Kage 12-04-2006 05:41 PM

Their music is based around long-building crescendos where more and more instruments layer on and build up to a huge climax. It often starts with a single guitar riff and adds percussion, bass, horns, violins, cellos, keyboards, voice samples, etc. Usually very dark, lonely and depressive in nature, although occasionally uplifting. Their songs are often segmented into distinct movements, causing one track to last anywhere from 10 minutes to half an hour or more.

Their best album will vary from person-to-person but most people start with F#A# infinity. My personal favorite is Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven and their EP (which is far more digestible), Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada.

sweboy 12-04-2006 05:53 PM

This is what a Godspeed You! Black Emperor song is like:

0.00---silence---4.30---cymbal---12.00---more silence---

--15.00---violins start chugging--21.45---guitar enters--37.03--

--drums and bass kicks in---46.40---the first melody is introduced---50.30--

--cellos enter---speed increases---ENTER THE TIMPANI!--

-59.34---heavier and heavier--now one more note on the guitar--

--74.00--CLIMAX--CLIMAX--CLIMAX--74.25---silence---95.30--

--more silence--146.06---the end

Kage 12-04-2006 05:55 PM

146.06 of pure awesomeness, exactly.

Electrocution 12-04-2006 05:58 PM

more like Sweasshole.

sweboy 12-04-2006 06:02 PM

I dig them though.

pixiesfanyo 12-04-2006 06:05 PM

To watch or to play? It can be boring to watch if you're not into it but playing it is one of my favorite things to do.

Little Man being Erased 12-04-2006 06:36 PM

GY!BE's pretty boring.

wang masta flex 12-04-2006 06:54 PM

Yeah I only put em on when I'm studying or something. That's when I really enjoy their music, when I'm not really paying attention to it...

Even still, I will always love The Dead Flag Blues.
That song I can listen to all the way through and enjoy it.

AndreTheHyena 12-04-2006 09:15 PM

This is a long shot, but does anyone have Biirdie - Morning Kills the Dark in file form to send my way? I can't seem to find it on soulseek, and my copy is scratched to hell.

Otherside 12-04-2006 11:34 PM

I'm printing my EitS ticket right now :D

should be a great show, even if it is in march >.>

asdf 12-04-2006 11:48 PM

I'm one of those people that would have a problem with printing a concert ticket off my computer.

I have this thing about collecting ticket stubs :(

Otherside 12-04-2006 11:54 PM

Shows get sold out so fast here though, I don't really have a choice :\

Sigur Ros sold out in 10 minutes, Sufjan in 5(after student preorders(he was playing at a university)). It sucks :(

asdf 12-05-2006 12:01 AM

I paid for Sigur Ros online the first time I saw them, but the tickets came in the mail.

I mean sure, I don't have ticket stubs for every show, but any show that I've had a ticket stub for, I've saved. All the way back to when I was 9 and I saw The Turtles.

Anxious 12-05-2006 12:02 AM

Each ticket stub you have adds one to your hearing loss meter scale.

bleep_bloop 12-05-2006 12:23 AM

the volume at shows usually doesnt even bother me anymore.
the volume at shows usually doesnt even bother me anymore.
Yeah, which means that you now have less sensitive hearing.

StaticSynth 12-05-2006 12:39 AM

My friend usually wears ear-plugs at shows. I've been meaning to do the same.

niobium 12-05-2006 12:42 AM

I really want to go to a legitimate rave sometime. Where they play The Prodigy - Claustrophic Sting for hours on end. Bring water and glowsticks.

Zappa 12-05-2006 12:43 AM

Yeah, I have permanent hearing damage because I'm a retard about things.

pixiesfanyo 12-05-2006 12:43 AM

I wear ear plugs for openers usually.

asdf 12-05-2006 12:44 AM
Each ticket stub you have adds one to your hearing loss meter scale.
I am honestly going to be deaf by the time I'm 30.

Do you know how many times a day I'm already going "what?" whenever someone says anything?

Kage 12-05-2006 12:44 AM

That's always a good plan to wear ear plugs for openers.

Zappa 12-05-2006 12:46 AM

I find it so weird that a lot of kids here seem to only go to shows featuring well-known bands. To me, a huge part of my musical identity comes from seeing local and regional acts that are going nowhere fast.

asdf 12-05-2006 12:49 AM

I used to be really into that. I was such a big fan of one particular band in my town, and went to every show I could, which also got me into many other local bands.

But they broke up, and my friends stopped caring about local shows, and I just sort of grew out of it. I still go to the occasional show, and I'm thrilled when I find a local group that has some merit.

Fag.

YDload 12-05-2006 01:15 AM

my friend has more "mainstream" taste and he offers to drive so i go with him to 2,000+ shows with major-label bands

you gotta admit its a thrill to see famous people in person, but i also like getting excited at lesser-known bands. they play smaller venues and you can get close to em and maybe even talk after the show :)

pixiesfanyo 12-05-2006 01:41 AM

yeah both types of show are great.

seeing NIN was just as fun as seeing Hot Cross

Electronic Wolf 12-05-2006 02:59 AM

I need to control my emotions.

You like Hot Cross, pixiesfagyo?

bleep_bloop 12-05-2006 03:22 AM

hot cross is pretty ok

same here. the louder, the better.

i had a really fucked up nightmare last night.

ATM 12-05-2006 11:17 AM

I had a dream that my science teacher gave everyone in the class a giant hamburger at the end of the class. Then, when I walked out of the room eating said giant hamburger, I walked into a little kid marching band playing Kashmir.

Kyle 12-05-2006 11:24 AM

Wow.

I woke up and was sick all over my room this morning....pretty fun. Think it was food poisening or something because I hadn't had much to drink

Same here, except I managed to get to a bathroom. It was horrible.

beso negro 12-05-2006 12:09 PM

I woke up and saw a brand new pimple on my face. I think it is because I was masturbating last night.
