I may have to second this, since that's all I've been listening to today, until about 3 minutes ago.
I like the Evan Greer fella. He's like Phil Ochs if Phil rose to prominence in this time.

milkmit 01-03-2006 10:33 PM

...just recently got into them from a friend and, like a noob, posted a thread about them in the indie/alternative section (after searching this forum, as well as that one -- what's up with the 0 results?).

good stuff.

TakeWarning 01-04-2006 04:38 AM

I've decided I'll learn of their songs as soon as I get my bass back from Tim's house.

rawdog 01-06-2006 02:29 AM
I don't know how to play any of their songs yet. It's too much of an effort to find reliable tabs these day, and none of their songs reall have great basslines anyway.
Most of its easy as, just try work it out, it wil improve your ear heaps....

TakeWarning 01-06-2006 04:41 AM

Yeah, good idea.

The search engine's broken.

Brain Toad 01-06-2006 04:08 PM

Against Me has never returned results, because 'me' is too short, and for some reason 'against' is blocked.

He's all I've been listining to for the past few days, him and the whole Riot-Folk crew are awesome.

When I can't find something in the Search I go to Google, type in what I'm looking for and "Musicianforums." Then I just look through the results within the site. Works quite well.

Yeah, I've tried that and it works.

Man, I should really go and buy a ticket for their February concert before they sell out.

Can anyone tell me the meaning behind the lyrics to the verse in Walking Is Still Honest?

I can understand what the chorus means but I don't understand how the verses fit in to the song.

Dear mother,
This is just survival.
Cannot promise your children everything,
But you won't lie so they can sleep tonight.
Defeat tasted nothing like you said.
Still 22 days left till the end of the world.
My legacy was making you a man
For a justice I could not change.
This is one voice not to forget;
"Fight every fight like you can win;
An iron fisted champion,
An iron willed **** up."

This is about his mother raising him, and trying her hardest to warn him of the horrors of the world, but still trying to teach him of everything he will learn through his mistakes and "defeats." Although, he doesn't really think he learned anything, and just sees it as **** ups, and still has so many questions- cue the chorus.

Dear ****head,
This isn't happening;
The sky is really falling,
The paint's all made of lead,
There's asbestos in the walls,
Hell's coming to rip off the doors
To your priveleged heaven.
Do you want to love and feel it?
You can look but you can't taste it.
You can reach but you'll never have it.
We are untouchable;
Untouchable is something to be.

This is probably him talking about a specific point in his life where everything fell apart, and he beleives everything he's ever been told was a lie. The second part "Do you want to love and feel it..." can probably be interpreted a thousand ways. But I dunno, I kind of look at it as how people are. How people can guide us, but they will never be able to get inside our skin and truly understand us, or give us some real understanding of anything. But I dunno, it could also be about how no one's ever really given the happiness that's been promised to us.

Also, it's important to note that Tom said that he wrote this song for his mother.

I think the line is, "You would lie so they could sleep tonight."

Anyway, I've wondered this also. My view is that he's emoting about the harshness of the world that's been taught to him, but that his mother would lie in order to make it seem alright. Her legacy was making him into a man. I don't understand the justice line. But even though the world is harsh, he's got to give it his all. He's gotta stand up and be strong willed even though he feels predestined for defeat.

The second part is about how everything that establishes common people is being torn apart. The sky, a permenant fixture, is decaying. The paint on your walls is toxic. Heaven is no longer for the chosen. He talks about how things are almost attainable but often just out of reach. The last two lines, I always take to mean how punkers are untouchable both in the sense of disgust and in enlightenment.

It's you won't. I have the lyrics sheet.

You put your explanation very well, expecially the second part.

That's funny, I always thought it said you would. That kinda changes my interpretation of the song a little bit.

So I found an against me video on my computer a couple minutes ago. And I'm watching it now. It's pretty good quality, and it looks like its a couple years old.
