please recommend me one song to make up my mind about them

That's hard to say...they have so many great songs and they're a pretty diverse band. If I had to pick just one, would say that "Pull Me Under" is a good introduction to them, though. |
I would say A Change Of Seasons as an introduction to anyone who is interested in Dream Theater, as it's one of my favourite songs ever recorded. It's got everything that makes the band great...instrumental virtuoso soloing (listen to Petrucci go at times during it), but not to an extent where it could put off prospective new fans of the band; a really epic song structure- it is 23 minutes long after all, and it's also clearly about something. People's exact interpretations can differ, but it's about a definite theme. Put it this way; have you ever heard of a Dream Theater fan that DOESN'T like A Change Of Seasons? Having said that someone'll come in here now and say that they don't, but I can definitely recommend that song as a starting point for the band.
You're right, dude. This song clearly shows the virtuoso elements, the melodic element and the soft & heavy elements that make this band a great one. :thumb: |

im a huge DT fan but for some reason ive never got round to getting ACOS. Everyone says its one of their best works but i probably shied away from it as im not such a huge fan of their earlier prog stuff and noticed the date and the... oh im sorry /breaks down into tears. So can a worthy DT fan tell exactly what ACOS is like and which albums it is most similar to? |

Probably most similar to Scenes from a Memory, I think so anyway. This is a question for the people from England/Britian, when was the first time you people heard about Dream Theater? |

This is a question for the people from England/Britian, when was the first time you people heard about Dream Theater?
Hmm, probably about a year ago on this forum. At first I was like- what's going on?? but it soon grew on me. La Brie look a while to get used to though, I admit. |
The first time for me, even though I live in the US, was on here...I hadn't heard about them at all before, and then I read about them on here but never bothered to check them out. I then saw the Pull Me Under video on Headbanger's Ball a few weeks later and was like "I like this band." I loved Train of Thought, so I got more of their stuff.
LaBrie didn't take long for me to warm up to. I had listened to stuff like Maiden and Iced Earth (Owens, not Barlow) and his voice wasn't all that different in terms of pitch from either of their voices. |

The Glass Prison. Long, strong, heavy, melodic, kickass solo...everything. |

Long, strong, heavy, melodic, kickass solo...everything.
and ytse jam :) (4 solo's in it i think) |
I can upload the title song for you tomorrow if you want...personally I'd say that's the only thing really worth getting on the album, as the covers are mediocre at best. It's probably most like Scenes From A Memory though (based on what I've heard, anyway).
On this forum. Literally, I had never heard of them before signing up here, and still wouldn't have done, as I've never seen them mentioned on any of the non-Internet things I read/listen to about music. Quite remarkable, given their popularity here, but there we go. I've never really got the fuss about LaBrie's vocals, personally. Sure, he's not the best vocalist of all time, or anything like that, but he's far far better than people credit him for at times. I've read stuff about his singing which makes it sound as if he couldn't hit a note if his life depended on it, and that's utter rubbish.
compared to alot of vocalists today labrie has a great voice, and the other members are great musicians as well. and i heard about them from friends |
i listened to few tracks like 'lost without you' 'the glass prison' 'metropolis' as a beginner which dt album do you recommend?
|

this is the song that got me hooked :thumb: anyone learning it besides me. I finally trabbed the one part i couldnt find tab for. I was giddy |

I personally recommend Images & Words or Awake, my two favorites. I'd say the two not to get, as an introduction, would be Falling Into Infinity or Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Both albums are still good (only because I love anything DT does), but they are not representative of DT's overall sound. |

This is what I was trying to get at, I had never heard of this band before MF, yet they seem to have a decent American following. Well decent when compared to the English following. Size for Size ratios and what not too. |

As a whole, I like ACOS...but there are certain movements of the song (Carpe Diem comes to mind) that I like less than others. Innocence is definetly my favorite. |
Apparently my friend got the song 'The answer lies within' from Ares of the new album that hasn't been released yet. I'm wondering if anyone else has heard this, i'm still skeptical to whether it is real or not. Labries vocals are there, fast guitar solo, it actually sounds like Linkin Park but with a solo.
Anyone? |
It might be from Elements Of Persuasion...thats been happening quite a bit.
|
As of the moment I have downloaded Sacrificed Sons and Octavarium
Both songs are around 5:00mins long and well are heavy but not quite ToT heavy. Its more a mix of old DT with heavy-ness, I don't know its hard to put but i'm uploading the songs on You Send It and should be ready in a few minutes. |
Ok heres Sacraficed Sons

Samples of the new DT album. If what you have isn't those lengths and doesn't sound like that, you haven't downloaded the new album. |
I'm sure there from the new album
|
Heres The Root of all Evil

Somethings fishy here...I thought Octavarium was supposed to be like 24 minutes long?
|
Well I don't know..its definitly Dream Theater
|
Are you sure its not LaBrie's solo stuff?
|
No i'm not
But did John Petrucci play on his solo album/ |
I'm sure they're from the new album.
No, it's not DT, it's Elements Of Persuasion by James LaBrie, and Petrucci did NOT play on his album. Hell, the guitar playing doesn't sound like JP's, there aren't any fancy keyboard sections of JR's, and it's pretty much total 4/4, which isn't DT at all. It's completely obvious it's NOT DT. |
