Yeah most people I know are fucking terrible with money. They get into debt, don't save money by conserving power etc. Then they complain about how much money they owe the bank etc and I'm just like well, that's your own fault.

Nothing I have ever bought put me into debt with interest. I.e. fuck hire purchase or loans.

I've used a credit card before but paid it off before it incurs interest.

Although, it's depressing to think that when I moved here me and my gf had like 5000 in the savings and 3000 in the current account. Granted a lot of that 3000 went on moving fees and the like, we now have like 400 in the savings. But, with some stuff being sold, and half of our TV is being paid for eventually by her family, it should be up to about 1500. Still. Where the fuck did $6500 go?

That's not even accounting for the fact I worked all last summer and topped up the savings :upset:.

Point in case: my roommate. She's alright to live with because she always pays rent and doesn't eat my food. But It's just laughable the way she acts. Like, buys useless shit like firetwirling sticks and mountains of DVD's she never watches, then eats nothing but take away, goes out for dinner 4 times a week and eats frozen pizzas etc. all the time, then has the nerve to bitch about how she has no money. I'm like, seriously, pull your fucking head in. Then blames it on her job not paying enough.

I work 28 hours a week at a fucking pet shop and with that, I go to uni full time, pay rent, pay rent on my bands rehersal room, save money, buy food, petrol (for two vehicles), pay for my mobile phone and internet, go out at least once a week and can have a few beers/wines whenever I feel like it.

I have no idea how people waste so much money on literally nothing.

I know what you mean about 'where did my savings go' though, I had about 9k before I moved out of home, then I moved, got my bike, bought a computer and even with all the money I've been pumping back in for the last few months I only have 6.5 now.

When you have savings it's sometimes too easy to say you want something and then just do it. But at the same time, money is there to be spent. No point in saving up 50k over 3 years of work and then doing nothing with it.

It is weird hey, I know people who make more money than me, but live at home and pay no rent and have no expenditures that aren't optional, and then they are still broke all the time? What the fuck.

Yeah it's totally like that. Due to having a joint bank account with my gf, we had quite a bit of money and I ended up needing/wanting things and just getting them cause we 'had the money' (Like outright buying my $1900 iMac). Usually I'd justify by buying things on the premise I'd sell some stuff to make up for it or all of it.

You do seem to make 28 hours stretch a long way, even from my point of view. Do you get government assistance as well?

You have got to stop this 'hey' business gassy.

It's aye, or eh, not motherfucking hey! :smash:

Those people you speak of probably have no experience in budgeting for the real world, and because they've lived at home all their life only buy the things they want because everything is provided for them lol.

No.

I'm just fantastic.

I get paid fortnightly and get about $900, have 350 a fortnight rent, 60 a fortnight band rent plus 120 monthly in phone/internet. those are my main expenses, so in an average month I have about 920 give or take to spend on food, petrol etc. I bank about 250 or so of that, gets me by.

gaslight 09-21-2010 08:47 PM

Yeah it's not hard to make ends meet if you cut out the luxury items.

Helps to have low rent too, yours isn't heaps low though, just enough to be pretty friendly. I've got to look into the whole housemates thing.

Well honestly I could be paying less and have like, a house. But I don't want/need one really, I like it here. It's of a higher quality. It's $350 a week split, so yeah 350 a fortnight.

Sydney prices are horrendous though.

umm, no, thats not what im saying

im saying have a degree increases your net worth

it has nothing to do with ideals or education it has to do with

you have a degree, so you get paid more money than people who dont have one

dont listen to these idiots on the internet who yell and scream about how college is dumb and you dont need to go it doesnt do any good blah blah blah blah blah fuck you yes it does go to fucking college and get your degree your life will be better

gaslight 09-21-2010 08:53 PM

I like a decent place to live too 'cause I'm not the type to be out all the time.

Sydney prices are gay, I'm paying $600 a fortnight but I do get heaps of space out of it and am generally pretty lucky in the situation.

Epidemechanical 09-21-2010 08:58 PM

working for the government in america is about the best shit ever

stable jobs great starting salary full benefit package secure retirement plan

and guess what you need

a 4 year degree

doesn't matter what its in

also when applying for jobs do you know how a lot of employers determine your placement and pay

lol your education level

there are literally hundreds of thousands of positions that require a degree in no particular field and a BA is rarely ever considered for what you actually "studied"

i got my current job largely due to the fact that i had an AA degree when i applied

i had no experience, no training

but because of my education i was hired to be trained alongside others who got hired on the basis of experience and knowledge with no degree

it adds to your professional resume and it never ever fucking subtracts

unless of course youre like 5 million dollars in debt in which case fuck your degree but thats a different story

I'm with you on this one. Even if you're degree is total shit (see: my degree), it will help you get a job.

My uncle told me there's two types of degree; one that gets you a job (science, medical, etc.) and one that will help you get a job (everything else). Even if it's total bullshit and has no relevance to anything it will show potential employers that you are 1) motivated enough to complete tertiary education and 2) aren't a dumb shit.

Basically.

Only thing I don't agree with you here bro, saying 'your life will be better'. In my opinion that depends on what you want to do with your life. I mean, if you're a brick layer all your life what the fuck good is a degree in microbiology - or anything for that matter.

If you want to be a tradesperson, you can live fine and never go to uni/college/whatever. You do an apprenticeship, sure, but that's a whole different kettle of fish.

Ouch. For 350 a week (between the two of us) we've got a 2 bed, 2 bath apartment with a big balcony, half decent view, on a main road in a good suburb close to transport/shops/etc.

Yeah I'm pretty stoked here, same deal basically, close to station and shops and main road, spare room that I've turned into a music room and a backyard to kick the footy in.

Thinking of moving somewhere smaller early next year though, just gonna see how it travels and how my income fluctuates.

And damn Joel is pretty short hey.

Oh. I have no yard, I have concrete, everywhere. My room is basically work station + music. I've actually got a pretty sweet setup now, I'll upload some photos of my awesomeness after I finish this damn business report.

900 a fortnight, yeah it's ok. Mostly because I'm still casual even though I get stable hours. I'm moving to part time soon so I'll get a bit less, but holidays and sick pay is worth it.

I get 18.53 p/hour on weekdays with some ok penalties on weekends.

My last job paid 19.87 an hour weekdays, +25% on Saturdays and +50% on Sundays.

Lmao anything but.

I'm pretty much have no fat, all muscle, but not bulky. So I have a pretty much perfect BMI, very little body fat, but nothing like someone who works out in terms of physique.

If any of that makes any sense.

Convectuoso 09-21-2010 11:33 PM

1,168.32 NZD. Holy fuck no wonder you can afford to live.

I live on 320NZD fortnightly, which I eventually have to pay back. Gf get's the same so we pool our resources. Yes, very whipped, but works out better for the both of us.

I.e. it costs relatively less for two people to live together than to live by yourself.
