It's two kits put together. He plays different kits for different songs.

Moses 04-20-2006 12:04 PM

Mike Portnoy's old style might go a bit better with Akerfeldt and Wilson but I'd prefer a more jazz/hip-hop influenced drummer. I think Abe from Deftones would do well with those two.

Crysiss 04-20-2006 12:16 PM

That would be interesting Moses.

Moses 04-20-2006 12:18 PM

Or even better, Danny Carey.

JamJar 04-20-2006 12:23 PM

I can't stop whoring Danny Carey, I love his drumming style too much. :(

Shadius 04-20-2006 12:38 PM

I think Portnoy would be versitile enough to pull it off, tbh. He's not going to be showing off any overly complex beats and such, if he does it wouldn't even fit the music, and Steve and Mikael would be like... wtf, get out.

It'd be like a Flea in the Mars Volta type situation, his basslines on De-Loused bare no resemblance to anything he's done with the Chilli's, and it works really well.

AA-12 04-20-2006 01:58 PM

On the opposite spectrum, this owns for me.

Mikael = Favorite singer/maybe guitarist
Portnoy = Favorite drummer
Wilson = Great producer

Man he's soo underated. :chug:

EDIT: Referring to Abe.

Deth 04-20-2006 03:30 PM

Thomas Haarke ftw.

Kick up the ol' technicality meter.

Thor 04-20-2006 03:51 PM
Portnoy's a good drummer, he's just so damn overrated.
I'll drink to that. :chug:

I'd rather have them use Bobby Jarzombek or Gene Hoglan.

RouteOne 04-20-2006 04:04 PM
?

As for Portnoy, I've barely ever listened to Dream Theater so I know nothing about what kind of drummer he is. I've just heard he's good. But the point is, Wilson + Akerfeldt = fuck-mazing
Good god meaning, I want to hear them.

Well since you're not really acquainted with Portnoy, here's a rather famous video of him just so you can understand how good he really is.

/laughs as well.

I cant see the 3 of them playing together.

Thor 04-21-2006 07:00 PM

I can easily see Wilson and Akerfeldt playing, seeing as how they already have in past Opeth albums, but I can agree with not seeing Portnoy not playing with them. They seem more like a group that would have Danny Carey or someone along the lines of that.

Darkness 04-21-2006 07:02 PM

Mikael seems to be good friends with Portnoy though. He doesn't even know Danny Carey. Mikael even thanks Portnoy and Dream Theater in the booklet to Ghost Reveries. And it's not like Portnoy wouldn't know what he's doing with them, he's a farily technical, prog rock/metal drummer, I'm sure whatever he does with Mikael and Wilson will be great.

Thor 04-21-2006 07:04 PM

Oh, I was unaware of the Ghost Reveries shoutout. That changes my opinion on things. If they do actually record an album together I'll surely be getting it as soon as it is released.

Portnoy isn't versatile though.. He's got no groove and sense of dynamics, Lopez and Gavin Harrison (PT's drummer) is in a completely different league to Portnoy

Thor 04-21-2006 07:06 PM

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. While I can't stand Dream Theater as a band, I have the utmost respect for their abilities. Portnoy is capable of doing many different things on a drumset and is at a higher level than Lopez is.

Darkness 04-21-2006 07:10 PM

Portnoys a fine drummer Knifeboy. Listen to the Awake album, he's got enough groove and dynamics to be able to work with Mike and Steve.

Thor 04-21-2006 07:11 PM

This is a hopeless dream, but I'd love to hear Bobby Jarzombek play with them instead of Portnoy. That would be a musical orgasm at it's finest.

denboy 04-21-2006 07:12 PM

I've heard all of DT's catalogue, and I'd say that Mike Portnoy wouldn't be able to write anything like the drumparts for Windowpane or PT's The creator has a mastertape....

Thor 04-21-2006 07:13 PM

He's got enough skill and plenty of time to come up with new ideas so I think he would be able to. I think you're underestimating Portnoy's potential.

denboy 04-21-2006 07:14 PM

I'd love it for him to prove me wrong......

Det_Nosnip 04-21-2006 07:54 PM
Why do you think that?

Not being rude or anything.
Because he's a terrible drummer. His feel is completely flat, very robotic touch...I don't think I've ever heard him groove. He's been reusing the same goddam licks since Awake, and about the only thing that seems to change about him is the size of his kit. Steven would be better off just dragging Gavin Harrison with him, as he is 100x the musician that Portnoy will ever be.
This is a hopeless dream, but I'd love to hear Bobby Jarzombek play with them instead of Portnoy. That would be a musical orgasm at it's finest.
Jarzombek would be a decent choice. Sean Reinert would be awesome as well.
PT's The creator has a mastertape....
Honestly, he doesn't even have the chops for that. Some of the licks that Gavin pulls in that song are just sick.

If push came to shove and Portnoy ended up having to cover the song, I would put money on the fact that he would replace every fill Gavin played with hand/foot trades.

Stormrider 04-21-2006 08:00 PM

woah triple post :p

Det_Nosnip 04-21-2006 08:02 PM

Don't worry, I'm cleaning it up.

Deth 04-21-2006 08:03 PM

Wow, Reinert would be really good.

Det_Nosnip 04-21-2006 08:12 PM

^^ Yeah...now THAT is a well-rounded musician.
Reflection, Ticks And Leeches, Lateralus, The Grudge and Aenima are proabably some of his best work.
You forgot 46&2. :)

Darkness 04-21-2006 08:53 PM
Wow, Reinert would be really good.
I've only heard his work with Death, and it was pretty awesome. He probably would do well with them.
