And Mike Portnoy is meant to be a part. I hope that because of a Dream Theater member being there it doesn't mean over extended, self indulgent solos.
|
Yea Mikeal does some cool sounding rake leads on that song..
|

Someone has a different view to me :p But yeah, I guess they do get boring after a while but I don't think Portnoy is responsible for the 12 minute guitar solos. |
Yeah, yeah.. Porcupine Tree rocks yadda yadda yadda... who cares.
I'm kidding.. :) Sorry to break the topic and all, but... I see Opeth in less than two hours. :P Fvck I'm excited!!@ I look forward to my ears being barraged by some form of heaven-sex. Plus, I am a virgin to their live show so.. yeah. W00H00! I'll be sure to tell you all how it went. Have a good day and/or night. |

Yeah, I was hoping the same thing. Akerfeldt and Wilson would probably let him play some sweeeet drum parts but would still keep him in line. I'm really looking forward to that happening. |
How absolutely sick would it be if Wilson and Akerfeldt did a side project together?
Dude, they are doing a side project together. With Mike Portnoy. It's going to be amazing. I don't think Mikael is on Open Car...he did backup vocals on some tracks, the mellow solo on ASBNH, but I don't think anything on Open Car. The reason I think I was listening to that song so much was because of the chorus, it has such a mellow mood. And yeah, BRI is one of my favorite songs, but my real favorite by Opeth is Face of Melinda and that only has 6 plays. And my favorite song ever, Echoes by the Floyd, barely has any plays. Go figure. |
...and Maynard's going to be there too?
/ I keed, I keed. |
On itunes (if you have it) go to play count and see which song by opeth you've played the most. Mine is April Ethereal, The Moor, and Benighted in that order.
Note: This is my computer at home, and my one at Uni will display very different results, not to mention my mp3 player. Leper Affinity - 19 Then the next 3 tracks from Blackwater Park. Then Windowpane and To Rid the Disease. I think I was just getting into Opeth on this computer and those two albums got me into them. At Uni I *think* Ghost Reveries may be at the top, or Still Life. On my mp3 player MAYH is at the top, probably followed by Still Life. Yeah, some songs are so good you just don't want to overplay them. I find that, and equally, some songs are an experience, and you like/love it, but arn't always in the mood to listen to such a long song. It's like.. you can say what your favourite movies are after only watching them one or two times. The same can sometimes apply to songs, I guess. |
My iTunes doesn't show my play count. :upset:
I changed it so that it does but it's all back at zero. Boo. |
I only listen to Opeth via my cd player.. Wich doesn't go on my last.fm playlist
|
lol, my Porcupine Tree plays on this PC are so steriotypical.
Shallow - 16 Sound of Muzak - 15 Lazarus - 14 They're not my favourite PT songs, well, maybe Sound of Muzak is, the other two are just good songs. I'm really digging the songs in the vein of Start of Something Beautiful, Heart Attack in a Layby, Collapse Light into Earth. They write them very well. |
NOTE:
Mikael is on #'s 1, 3, and 5 on Porcupine. He does some vocals on all three, actually. I'm pretty sure that's Mike's voice in Arriving Somewhere, but not Here, at least.... I know he plays a kick *** solo! Anyway, it's all in the album notes. |
He plays an AMAZING jazz solo in Arriving Somewhere But Not Here.
Yeah, that solo is incredible. Has it occured to anyone else of the irony that Steve Wilson recruited someone from a death metal band to play a jazz solo? |
With Mike Portnoy
Only snag in it for me. :( He seriously could ruin the project. |

Why do you think that? Not being rude or anything. |
Portnoy is a great drummer!
It wouldn't sound anything like Dream Theater or LTE, the music surrounding the drumming would be totally different. If there was to be a drummer involved in this project, the ones that would spring to mind for me would be Danny Carey, Josh Freese, Mike Portnoy, even martin Lopez. They'd all fit the project for me. |

I'd love to see Danny Carey in the project. Damn I just can't get over how much of a great drummer he is and how I love his style.
My top 8 played Opeth tracks are all the Damnation tracks (all in their 20s) and my top played PT song is Lazarus (30). |

Reflection, Ticks And Leeches, Lateralus, The Grudge and Aenima are proabably some of his best work.

Cool thanks. |
As we've been saying in the Porcupine Tree thread, I think Portnoy is absolutely the wrong choice for a drummer in the Wilson/Akerfeldt project.
|
Good god.....
? As for Portnoy, I've barely ever listened to Dream Theater so I know nothing about what kind of drummer he is. I've just heard he's good. But the point is, Wilson + Akerfeldt = fuck-mazing |
Im finally checking out Camel. I dont like the whistling in the songs, but I see the influence.
|
I can't stand Portnoy or anything related to Dream Theater, so he definitely wouldn't be my first choice for an Akerfeldt/Wilson project.
|
Portnoy's a good drummer, he's just so damn overrated.
|
Indeed he is overrated and has an unhumanly sized kit. Why do you need three bass drums?
