I found Hallucinogenic mushrooms growing at my school on thursday. Not the softcore psilocybin ones though. I found Fly Amanitas growing by the parking lot. They are the hardcore ones

Edit--misspelling

Accentopus 10-17-2004 02:43 AM

Kandyman 10-17-2004 02:44 AM

gaslight 10-17-2004 05:37 AM

Killed the thread w00t.

Anyway, what are you guys up to on bass?

At the moment I'm working on writing/being able to play some stuff I wrote with chords and whatnot. I know what I to play I just can't do it yet :upset:.

Wintermute 10-17-2004 05:41 AM

Nice picture.

I haven't started the day's bassing yet, I've only just got up.

gaslight 10-17-2004 05:48 AM

Thanks :).

So Wintermute, where does your name come from? I've always thought it would make a pretty sweet band name.

Wintermute 10-17-2004 05:56 AM

Have you heard of William Gibson? He wrote a book called Neuromancer, which along with the works of Arthur C. Clarke and Philip K. Dick set a base for all sci-fi. The list of things influenced by this book is endless, but the most obvious is the Matrix, that could never have happened without Neuromancer. The whole concept of putting your mind on a network, or entirely into a simulation came from this book, and it invented the word 'cyberspace' among other words.

The general plot (I say general, the plot was complex, and got even more so with the sequels) was of a super intelligent artificial intelligence by the name of Wintermute plotting to free itself from its masters and its mainframe, and go free, and combine with Neuromancer, another artificial intelligence on the other side of the world. It describes the two of them as like the two lobes of the same brain.

Read the book, it's an incredible work of literature and imagination. Especially when you consider it was written in 1984. It's the only book in history to win all three of sci-fi's most prestigious awards, the Arthur C. Clarke award, the Philip K Dick award and the Nebula award.

gaslight 10-17-2004 05:58 AM

Sweet...

I'll buy a copy of that after my exams, it should be sold in all good bookstores by the sound of it?

Wintermute 10-17-2004 05:59 AM

If they don't stock it, it's not a good bookstore.

Wintermute 10-17-2004 06:07 AM

gaslight 10-17-2004 06:16 AM

Thanks for the link :thumb:. Looks really interesting.

Wintermute 10-17-2004 06:18 AM

Only the first part of the linked page is much good to someone who hasn't read it, the rest is a chapter by chapter synopsis for people with no brains.

gaslight 10-17-2004 06:24 AM

Yeah I saw those bits and figured they were spoilers, but the introduction part has interested me.

risbo 10-17-2004 06:29 AM

Well I'm reading 1984 right now. Good book.

Wintermute 10-17-2004 06:33 AM

1984 is a true classic. Orwell was the man.

Interestingly enough, 20 years after the setting of the book, telescreens are being developed, or so I did hear. Though I seriously doubt the makers would call them telescreens.

gaslight 10-17-2004 06:35 AM

Farenheit 451 is the only book of the type we're discussing that I currently own a copy of, I like it though.

After my exams finish (Nov 10) I'm getting myself new books to read.

So far the list includes Neuromancer and a bunch of Kerouac books.

Wintermute 10-17-2004 06:37 AM

I advise reading Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive after Neuromancer, they're the sequels.

risbo 10-17-2004 06:38 AM

Ah... My friend is reading farenheit 451. She really likes it.

I could use some new books to once I finish 1984 and zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance. Wow that one makes you think.

Edit:
I advise reading Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive after Neuromancer, they're the sequels.
Is there any relation between Count Zero the book and Count Zero the Stu Hamm song?

Wintermute 10-17-2004 06:41 AM

Yes, Stu Hamm is a big Gibson fan. Black Ice and Terminal Beach are also Gibson references.

gaslight 10-17-2004 06:52 AM

Does anyone know any good songs/peoms that deal with the concept of a journey? An "inner journey" if possible.

I need one for my english exam tommorow.

Wintermute 10-17-2004 07:25 AM

Yes - South Side of the Sky
Anderson/Squire

A river a mountain to be crossed
The sunshine in mountains sometimes lost
Around the south side so cold that we cried
Were we ever colder on that day a million miles away
It seemed from all of eternity

Move forward was my friends only cry
In deeper to somewhere we could lie
And rest for the day with cold in the way
Were we ever colder on that day a million miles away
It seemed from all of eternity

The moments seemed lost in all the noise
A snow storm a stimulating voice
Of warmth of the sky of warmth when you die
Were we ever warmer on that day a million miles away
We seemed for all of eternity

The sunshine in mountains sometimes lost
The river can disregard the cost
And melt in the sky to warmth when you die
Were we ever warmer on that day a million miles away
It seemed from all of eternity

And there's always good old Stairway to Heaven!

risbo 10-17-2004 07:26 AM

I thought the lyrics to Stairway meant nothing to Robert Plant though.
