Basically they have the same drivers as the 595's which a anout 120 more.

But to retard the 555's into being a lower end head phone, they put in these foam strips in between the driver and the venting.

Basically this stops ear flowing in and out of the cans, which is what open back head phones are supposed to do. So you open them up (very easy) and take them out. There wasn't a huuuuge difference, but the top end was definitely a bit better.

You can go for the 600's which are apparently a bit flatter than the 650's and quite a bit cheaper I think.
Sick mate.

I'm still quite confused haha.

I might just head into the high-end audio shop here and say I want something that won't colour what I'm listening to at all. I'm basically after a flat response for transcribing things, so any EQ tweaks I do make to what is playing will be quite literal once they get to my here. I'd also be using them for monitoring home recordings (I know it's bad of me and I should buy monitor speakers but I just do not have the money and it won't be for professional releases, just putting tracks together for students to practise with).

After all this time, you guys still talk about the same shit. sup?

Nice, bro. Glad you like it.

Today I'll be snagging an SM57 to re-try those vocal recordings. Along with some of the vocal exercises I've been doing over the past week, I'm expecting much better results.

gaslight 09-17-2010 09:41 AM

It's top stuff, sounds great on my electric guitar too.

Going to have to give another look at the Octamizer and Filter Twin I think, even though I've largely gone off bass effects.

I've used the Beta 58 before, and I was very pleased with how my vocals came through. Much better than the the Oktava MK319 and the AKG D1000E I have.

I've always been on the look out for an Octaver, but then I always convince myself that they track poorly and I should save money and really work on my tapping instead.

fatbandit 09-17-2010 12:11 PM

I love the OC-2 octaver. Even though the tracking isn't AMAZING. It sounds killer, and the glitchiness is part of the charm. And they cost like £40. Buy one.

First up on my list is a small crossover so that I can run two signal chains in parallel. It'll be nice distorting only 150Hz and above so that I can distort the upper registers and stop muddying up the bass. And vise versa if I want a low, muddy, angry distorted bass sound with a crisp high end.

Why a 57?

No head phone is flat. Simple as that.

It has something to do with how close they are to your ears apparently.

It's more about being translatable to other systems. HD650's are pretty good at that. I can trust them more than the HD555's but they are like 500 dollars more or summin'.

Also don't bother with speakers. Too expensive and won't matter how good they are in your untreated room.

Convectuoso 09-17-2010 03:28 PM

You're probably better of getting some mid range headphones, learning how to EQ and getting to know your cans by listening to stuff on them all the time.

Sound waves take time to form. Get a sound wave with a wavelength of 1 foot and it wont come the same as the wave with a wavelength of .01" that has had a full period (or more) to generate.
Why a 57?
My guitarist left a 57 at my parents' place, so it's the only other free option. :)

Convectuoso 09-17-2010 03:40 PM

Haha ah fair enough, thought you were going to buy one for studio use, was about to facepalm your ass.

No. I'm really looking at one of those Heil PR30's. They apparently compare with the SM7's but are $80-$100 less. I won't need anything too expensive, but definitely a decent home studio vocal mic.

I'll be attempting to sell some more PA gear this weekend, so I may have the funding for it by the end of this month.

Beta 58's are great. I had one but it was stolen :(.

It was damn good, no doubt about it, and it can hold up to anything. If I were ever fronting a band, I'd have one of those or a Sennheiser e845 with me.

gaslight 09-17-2010 06:47 PM

Yeah I've given up trying o get in touch with the guy who has it. I paid a lot of money for it and I want it back.

gaslight 09-18-2010 08:35 AM

Joel hope you're doing alright buddy I hear NZ got jacked by a massive storm.

fatbandit 09-18-2010 02:50 PM

Okay then. Our album is out in just over a week, so we decided to put together a short album appetiser. Give it a listen? It's a pretty big deal to us! If you like it, we're taking pre-orders and several online stores will also be stocking it. Currently it's on soundcloud and also myspace if you prefer low quality.

Yeah we actually missed most of it where I am. Apparently there was lightning causing fires and like 100,000 people lost power throughout the country. Apparently it could of caused tornadoes! We got heavy rain/wind and thunder, but that was about it.

We lost power twice at my house on Friday night, I was in the studio at the time and was freaking that power would go out during the session :(

Chris: Shit sounds dope.
