Dissection helped me get into BM but I can't say I like em so much these days.

Dissection has good songs but is mostly boring

Yeah a few of their songs are pretty good still.

Of course I'm a bit late coming into this but I'd like to make a couple of points,

cael (?), although DMDS came out rather late there were many influential and important black metal releases before it; beherit, archgoat, darkthrone, immortal, burzum, VON all made their most important contributins before DMDS was released...particularly pure holocaust for influence in the icy tremelo stuff you talked about.

other than that i agree with what you say. attila made much of what DMDS is, so dead on vocals would have changed the album a great deal, for worse if it was anything like his live performances. if you're serious about understanding black metal DMDS is absolutely essential, whether you enjoy it or not. i've got some albums that i don't enjoy very much but i own them and listen to them anyway so that i can understand their importance and influence.

It's the early grind influence.

A lot of that stuff isn't far from Sarcofago though.

I'm gonna agree with Stevie that the Somberlain is slightly better overall, but STOTLB does have some of the best songs.

I'm listening to Daudi Baldrs by Burzum. The only difference between this album and the albums preceding it is the instrumentation used. If Daudi Baldrs were played on metal instruments nobody would doubt it being black metal and it would be far better rated. It makes me think that people are too narrow minded and go too much by how it sounds rather than what it is. People should really look beyond the instrumentation and see the same Burzum there that was there in Det Som Engang Var. Hlidskjalf is very different in construction - unless I'm mistaken. I'm going to to listen to that next.

the songs themselves are good, if a tad too repetative, but the keyboards sound really cheesy

daudi baldrs is my favorite Burzum album so yeah

i really dont have a favorite burzum album - they're all brilliant. the only one i have a problem with is filosofem because i think the whole thing is a bit too repetative, especially the latter half.
