so anyway, I think I want to pick up some mallets to use on the kit. does it really matter what type I get? I mean, obviously I'm not gonna get a huge concert bass drum beater, but will any soft, small to medium-sized mallets work?

I would get hard felt covered cart wheel mallets for kit use, if the mallets are like yarn or too soft they wont be able to draw much of a sound out of your drums.

I don't think drugs make you better at writing songs and playing music (well, depends on the drug) but there is a very strong correlation between kick *** bands and drug usage.
