I was reading the lyrics to the song BWP and the lyrics are amazing. I also love this riff because it is so damn catchy:

e:----------------------------
b:----------------------------
g:----------------------------
d:-----------------------6----
a:-/5-5-4h5p4p0-------5--5---
d:---------------1br-0------0-
I didn't know Opeth used dropped D.

Darkness 10-05-2006 07:44 PM

Only in that song they did. And it worked.

A lot of GR is in Drop D as is BWP. I was more shocked that they used concert tuning instead of Drop D.

You mean standard E tuning??

Yes! I'll be able to play some Opeth songs! Because I have a Floyd Rose and the lowest tuning I can go to is dropped D without resetting the trem. And I have to have it in E for my lessons.

Stoo 10-05-2006 07:57 PM

I again, realised the amazingness of The Leper Affinity while in my car tonight.

Played it REAL loud. Awesome.

I try not to use too low of tunings, but I do have a weakness as of late in writing in drop D. I feel that I use it pretty intelligently however by making my own chords. For Example:

e|---|---|---|
b|---|---|---|
g|-5-|-5-|-3-|
d|-6-|-5-|-3-|
a|-x-|-x-|-x-|
d|-7-|-6-|-5-|

One of my fav. progressions that I've made in this tuning.

Darkness 10-05-2006 08:04 PM

I believe most of GR is in open D tuning, isn't it?

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-05-2006 08:08 PM

Everything I've looked into is.

So that's Ghost of Perdition, Harlequin Forest, and The Great Conjuration.

Sleepy 10-05-2006 08:39 PM

I thought GOP was standard.

What do I know though? Bass player. :p

Forlorn Hope 10-05-2006 09:08 PM

I'm really getting into Opeth lately. It's cool cause, if I'm in the mood for heavy metal, I can listen to Opeth. If I'm in the mood for rock, I can listen to Opeth, and If I'm in the mood for soft acoustic stuff, I can listen to Opeth.
:D

Most. Beneath the Mire and.. Isolation Years aren't. There might be one more but I don't think so.

Stormrider 10-05-2006 09:15 PM

I remember wanting to learn Ghost of Perdiditon. I got about at like the third page of the tab, and then suddenly stopped learning it. In the open D, it was the only thing I could play anyways...

bucket 10-05-2006 09:25 PM

DADFAD (open dm) tuning is insanely great.

But last I heard was that GR is in DADFAE.

I don't know for sure though.

...But you simply cannot beat To Bid You Farewell for clean singing.
Sure, you can: Face of Melinda, Windowpane, Godhead's Lament, Bleak.

Shadows 10-05-2006 09:46 PM

Pretty much anything post-Morningrise has better singing. TBYF has excellent vocals, but Mikael progressed greatly as time went on.

pate 10-05-2006 11:04 PM

The chorus of GL just might be my favorite of Mike's clean vocals.

Kage 10-05-2006 11:35 PM

The best Opeth clean vocal section is in Bleak when he's trading off with Steven Wilson. That section is classic.

pate 10-05-2006 11:35 PM

That's really quality as well. Maybe the second best instance.

Kage 10-05-2006 11:40 PM

Bleak is just a great song overall. Great atmosphere, amazing solo in the acoustic break, fantastic clean and growled vocals, impressive structure, and still a headbangable live favorite.

pate 10-05-2006 11:48 PM

Definitely. It's in my top 5 Opeth songs no question.

I love that song. Especially the clean part.

i am the robots 10-06-2006 12:07 AM

I overlistened Bleak.

PeEpHoLe_10 10-06-2006 12:21 AM

Can't beat White Cluster of The Lepper Affinity for me.

Nostalgia 10-06-2006 12:23 AM
I overlistened Bleak.
I hate when I do that. I'll find a really great song, but then get tired of it 'cause I listened to it too much.

Shi', I thought it was straight up drop D.

Same. Still listen to it though. But when I'm listening to Blackwater Park I have been skipping it recently.

Apocalypticon 10-06-2006 10:34 AM

For me when it comes to clean singing and acoustic/clean guitar nothing beats Benighted.

TojesDolan 10-06-2006 12:36 PM

Bleak builds up greatly. Despite the repetitive intro lyrics, it's overall a great song that flows amazingly.

the2stranger 10-06-2006 12:46 PM

Bleak is one of my favorite Opeth songs, the layered guitars create an hypnotizing effect and SW's vocals are great on that song, they work so good with Mikeal's ones. :)

TojesDolan 10-06-2006 12:54 PM

Some poeple don't like them because they're waaaaaay too high.

I can't sing them without stretching my voice to stupidly high levels.

the2stranger 10-06-2006 01:02 PM

I have quite a range, so I can sing along with them, though I have to warm my voice to be able to pull if off decently.

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-06-2006 01:15 PM

Can you guys do the intro to The Pot? That's what a real man does.

Bleak is probably my second favorite track off BWP, next to the title track.

the2stranger 10-06-2006 01:18 PM

I must say I'm not really familair with Tool's last effort, I don;t like it as much as previous stuff. :(

my favorite off BWP:
1. Title Track.
2. Bleak/ Leper Affinity/Dirge For November.
Too many awesome tracks on that album. :)

Apocalypticon 10-06-2006 01:21 PM

My favourites

1. The Drapery Falls(I'm with the fanboys on the awesomeness of this song)
2. Bleak
3. BWP or Leper Affinity

Why should that be a bad thing?
Why should that be a bad thing?
/Is listening to a song that last for 71:26.
I agree with you Kage.

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-06-2006 01:39 PM

Jesus, Pete. I read your "np" in the comm thread, went off line to take a shower and eat, came back, and it was the same song.

What's it like?

the2stranger 10-06-2006 01:42 PM

Yeah, it's that long. Haha.
It's a song by a Japanese Sludge/Drone band called Corrupted.
Their songs are quite long (atleast some of them are) and they sound so evil.
This music is poop-your-pants-worthy.
really hypnotizing, repetitive and dark.
Real mood music, I've been on a binge lately. :)

SW?

Isn't that Mikael?

Kage 10-06-2006 01:46 PM

He and Mikael trade off/harmonize in one section.
