Haha.

Even auto tune doesn't take out whiny vocals. Makes it even worse in fact.

Read: Owl City.

Spaceman Spiff 09-14-2010 07:53 PM

We record vocals with a Blue Mouse. Pretty sweet little thang it is.

John Mayer can Double thumb: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3Exg3LU8s4&feature=related 4.27 mins. Came as quite a suprise...

Spaceman Spiff 09-14-2010 07:55 PM

John Mayer is a really talented guitarist, too bad he makes music that I just can't stand.

peeted 09-14-2010 07:56 PM

He does make some shit, the John Mayer trio has done some pretty good stuff though.

Convectuoso 09-14-2010 07:59 PM

He's a talented guy full stop really. Say what you want about the tonal characteristics, he can sing. And yeah he can shred. And write pop songs. Not many people can do that, regardless of taste.

Spaceman Spiff 09-14-2010 08:00 PM

I've listened to a lot of his stuff and only a few songs ever stuck out to me. There's this show called Live From Abbey Road where bands will go and play a few songs in the studio. John Mayer was on it once and I really liked his performance. I think the song was Believe or Belief or something like that.

@first pic: your drummer has terrible technique look at the way his wrist is bent. ughh

Gattsu347 09-14-2010 09:15 PM

dude has perfect technique look at that face!

gaslight 09-14-2010 09:18 PM

I don't like many of John Mayer's songs but the ones I do like are great. You cannot go very far wrong with Steve and Pino looking after you. The guy knew what he had to do to get rich and did it, now he can play and record with whoever he wants, so, hats off.

Also, if you read interviews with him, especially the one he did with Playboy, he comes across as a complete champion.

Shame about all the dumb little girls who make him seem like a tool by liking him but that's the price of fame and fortune.

Maybe he was just caught at a bad moment. No one has flawless technique 100% of the time. I mean, he's been playing for nearly 15 years and has no wrist problems, so he's probably doing something right.

gaslight 09-14-2010 09:34 PM

Are you related to the bassist? You kinda look a bit the same in the first photo.

What is 17/8? Is it art?

BenJammin 09-14-2010 10:04 PM

I'm going to pick up my newly adopted kitten tomorrow. Much more exciting than bass playing.

Epidemechanical 09-14-2010 10:08 PM

come post in the tactus a party thread!

That is pretty awesome man, what kind of kitten? Pics please.

I work in a pet shop. I also like cats.

Nope.
What is 17/8? Is it art?
He was wrong. The song is in 17/4, not 17/8. I was too polite to correct him. The song is counted with a repeating 7,5,5 count. And.. I guess it's art.
If your voice is shit, it always will be.
And that was what I was hoping not to hear.

I've tried every timbre adjustment in the book, but I just can't get the bass response or presence of the vocals to come out in the recordings. My first thought was the look at the mic, because I'm recording directly into my M-Audio device.

Any good sources of information for recording vocals?

Epidemechanical 09-14-2010 11:50 PM

your voice is not going to change it sounds the way it sounds get used to it

see nasally vocalists who are utter success

greg puciato
mike patton
serj tankian
phil collins (lol, ever hear him live?)
maynard (lol bro listen to eulogy)

a mic isnt gonna change a damn thing some of the best vocals youve prolly ever heard were done with an sm58 or some shit

Epidemechanical 09-15-2010 12:01 AM

also why the fuck would you want bass response from your vocals?

you should be asking for mixing tips for vocals not recording tips

the former requires at least a genre

and because i know you play heavier music

there is no fucking reason ever that you should want low end response thats what you should be avoiding

funkyhoney 09-15-2010 12:03 AM

My singer's got a fairly nasally voice, so do I, you just deal with it.

Lol get a better pre amp.

Most studio vocals are either a U47, a U87 or some other expensive mic or an esoteric mic choice decided by the engineer based on a myriad of different variables.

But.

An SM7 into a good pre is a very good choice.
