It's something to do with shapes.
When the guitar was invented, people tryed loads of tunings and EADGBE was the easiest to play all the shapes and scales they come up with. Something like that. But I'm not sure why it's E and not C# standard. |
It doesn't matter much to me. I use almost all of the standard and dropped d type tunings. I don't tune to open chords really. I usually stay standard e with one guitar because a lot of the older bands I know used it. It has also made an easier learning experience for me with learning the finger positionings for chords and such.

I think practising in E is better so when you go play on a guitar in a lower tuning, it will be easier. If you practised in D standard, then played on a guitar in E, it would seem harder. Unless, of course, if you practise on a drop tuning guitar that has thicker gauge strings so it's the same tension.

Yea. Whenever I practice I practicce in standard. Especially if I'm playing scales. |
Im just curious as to the reasons why you all drop tune. I'll drop down to D for one extra and makes it easier for me to right fast more complex rythms.
There are some classical pieces that are in drop D. |

Well, burn on yourself then.
|
I play a couple hours a day, most days.
2-4 hours range. Some might call me lazy but I'm in college and I work hard at everything I do. guitrguy: I tune to Drop D because I love the sound of it. That's pretty much it. No fancy reasons. I can't tune down to CGCFAD, which I'd like to because my strings will flop like fish outta water. I don't change between DGCFAD , DADGBE and EADGBE...because with floyd locking tremelo... Tuning different all the time to play each song, would be a bitch. |

I'll be practising hopefully around 12 hours this following week since I have no college.
Get up at 10am-1pm and play till like 10-11pm. That's my plans anyway, whether I'll actually obey that is a different story. |

I am too much of a computer geek to stay away from this thing. Then I have homework/study and such. I think the most I have ever played is somewhere around 4 hours. Yeah... I don't think I have ever topped that... |
12 hours is a lot. I can't even do 4 hours, I get bored and go on the computer or something. Yay, computer geek! haha.
|
I usually do just do that too but I'm starting to experience myself starting to suck.
Trust me, if I used a metronome and practised every chance I could since I discovered Yngwie Malmsteen, I'd be ****ing incredible. BUT The internet rules my life atm, so me = teh suck. |
Damn internet. I should listen to Malmsteen more..
|
I meant to listen to my Yngwie CD earlier but I forget to go get it.
|
Which album?
|
It's my own one I made. My own unique greastes hits, including:
Vengeance Rising Force Far Beyong the Sun Trilogy Suite Arpeggios from Hell Baroque and Roll Instrumental Institution Yer, Alexi uses Yngwie licks in some songs. |
Oh, cool. You should learn Arpeggios from Hell.. I tried once but failed, obviously.
|
I used to know it. I might see if I can still play it.
|
I'm the computer geek in this thread.
ha. I try and practice at least 2 hours a day. That lasts about 1 and a half hours or so most of the time. It's hard to keep my focus for that long with my laptop a few feet away. :p |
I only know the main riff in Arpeggios from Hell... it took a while to get down though...
|
I just tryed to play it...and I can't be bothered.
I watched him improvise through Far Beyond the Sun instead, wow. His vibrato is amazing. |

I haven't practiced for three days. Maybe it has something to do with me being incredibly sick. :( I was determined to learn a Dark Tranquillity solo yesterday but I passed out instead.
Oh well, once I get better it's back to three hours daily. |
