The growling on BWP is better than that on any of their other albums.

Orchid makes Kenny G. seem exciting.
That's because you're an idiot.
It's an enjoyable album, but Akerfeldt's vocals got exponentially better over time. That's one of the drawbacks from their first few albums. His clean vocals weren't nearly as refined as they are now.
It's a genious album. His clean voice was great but the poor production made it sound awkward. Besides that, Orchid didn't rely so heavily on vocals like everything post-MR did. It was primarily about the instrumental work.
Yeah. Blackwater Park and Still Life are both great, but I find myself listening to My Arms, Your Hearse the most. Probably because When is so mind-numbingly good and my favorite Opeth song ever. :)
MAYH is my third favorite, behind BWP and SL.

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-04-2006 11:08 PM
His growls on ghost shitteries is generic
I see what you've done there...Very clever.

Anyways, there no way The Great Conjuration's vocals are generic.

pate 10-04-2006 11:09 PM

Some of the vocals and the solo are the only thing that isn't generic on it.

PeEpHoLe_10 10-05-2006 01:04 AM

Will everyone stop ****ing saying Generic.

Captain Quentin 10-05-2006 04:28 AM

who gives a **** if something is generic or not? Opeth and ghost reveries are bloody awesome and that is that. :chug:

eug008 10-05-2006 04:52 AM

np: Opeth - Black Rose Immortal

Super song.

Stoo 10-05-2006 09:39 AM

It really is.

Fav Mike growling... = BWP, MAYH and Still Life.

And people said his clean singing is more refined on the later albums. I agree...

...But you simply cannot beat To Bid You Farewell for clean singing.

VomitStainedCretin 10-05-2006 09:56 AM

Orchid is a great album, although not my favourite (currently MAYH). I do find the opening riff to In Mist She Was Standing awesome for the first 30 secs or so they play it for, but it does seriously drag. Forest of October is one of my favourites (although there isnt a bad track on the album).

Does anyone else find the clean vox on April Ethereal amazingly spine tingling (in a good, non-creepy way)?

TojesDolan 10-05-2006 10:50 AM

Someone should define what's "generic" so we can like know what his standards are and then we can all laugh together.

pate 10-05-2006 10:52 AM

Well, I think that as a whole, TGC is quite generic, with the exception of the intro riff and solo. It just seems like we've heard it all a million times before.

TojesDolan 10-05-2006 11:07 AM

Yes it is. I define TGC as a generic song as well.

pate 10-05-2006 11:28 AM

So we're in agreement.

TojesDolan 10-05-2006 12:45 PM

Yes we are pate lol
Ghost Reveries they're generic, Deliverance they're generic and a very very small amount off BWP are generic.
Ghost Reveries-not really, I find that none of the stuff on this album to be "generic" in the sense that mainstream doesn't produce quality music like this. TGC is straight up death metal. Most ppl have a problem with this song because it's been overplayed. I agree with this, but it still doesn't make an arguement for it to be a bad song. Ghost of Perdition, Beneath the Mire, and Reverie/Harlequin Forest are IMO nowhere near generic and are very high quality songs.

Deliverance- This will probably be my next Opeth purchase. I can't give much of an arguement here because I haven't listened to it. I have heard Opeth play the title track live and I was very impressed with it (even with the crappy sound engineering)

BWP- In NO way is this album generic. The songwriting is genious at it's worst. Every part of the album is just teeming with fresh new ideas and things that have never been done before. My fav. songs are off of this album and it has been a heavy influence in my own personal songwriting. They use some very interesting chording in these songs and their clean singing has to be the best that I've ever heard.

pate 10-05-2006 02:27 PM

A lot of people don't like the vocals on those albums, including BWP, because they don't sound like a person, but instead like a huge metal machine.

jpshortstuff 10-05-2006 02:29 PM

Akerfeldt is a huge metal machine.

nobut i think the vocals sound perfectly human on all their albums. they still have character and dynamics and all the other stuff us humanoids do these days.
A lot of people don't like the vocals on those albums, including BWP, because they don't sound like a person, but instead like a huge metal machine.
I do admit that on BWP they covered the vocals in just way too much Reverb, but it does make the vocals sound gigantic.

pate 10-05-2006 02:38 PM

I've heard many people complain that they aren't emotional/human/"real"/whatever. I like them, regardless.

I find that their music has a little bit of everything in it.

Poetic lyrics, growling vocals, clean vocals, soft guitar melodies, grinding distorted riffs, creepy keyboards, etc.

For this reason alone I love them.

sir, you have summed up why i love Opeth right there. especially the riffs and growls :smash:

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-05-2006 02:51 PM

The keys are what made GR stand out for me, I think. It really added a lot to their sound.

I was reading the lyrics to the song BWP and the lyrics are amazing. I also love this riff because it is so damn catchy:

e:----------------------------
b:----------------------------
g:----------------------------
d:-----------------------6----

d:---------------1br-0------0-

Other than the intro to BOTH, I don't really care for them.

jpshortstuff 10-05-2006 03:01 PM

^^^^i love that bwp riff, both the clean and distorted version. they should go back to it later in the song methinks. growls fit perfectly over it.

lightningmetal666 10-05-2006 03:02 PM
Other than the intro to BOTH, I don't really care for them.
I think they should have integrated more keys into the songs. It seemed like the keys stopped for a good portion of the songs.

pate 10-05-2006 03:12 PM

When they did use them, the song kind of stopped just to make room for them, it seems.

The 'bark' Akerfeldt during the acoustic to distorted switch on this riff is awesome.

pate 10-05-2006 03:17 PM

All of his barks are awesome.

WOOF *riff change*

Shattered_Future 10-05-2006 04:11 PM

The main riff in Bleak is unbelievably fun to play.

pate 10-05-2006 04:20 PM

Indeed!

TojesDolan 10-05-2006 04:32 PM

The funniez factor is mostly in "Serenity Painted Death", at least for me.

pate 10-05-2006 04:36 PM

My favorite Opeth song to play is Harvest, followed by Deliverence. Those are the only two I know all of.

TojesDolan 10-05-2006 04:42 PM

I know Wreath, Serenity painted Death, Moonlapse Vertigo, Leper Affinity, Bleak, The drapery falls, A fair judgement, Windowpane, weakness (lol) and Ending credits. Amazing Setlist.

pate 10-05-2006 04:43 PM

...I forgot about AFJ and Ending Credits. So I could open for your headlining Opeth set.

TojesDolan 10-05-2006 05:09 PM

You'd haveto yawn less. :P

pate 10-05-2006 05:11 PM

I'm sure I'd be yawning plenty, with the boringness of playing the first few minutes of AFJ.

TojesDolan 10-05-2006 05:13 PM
I'm sure I'd be yawning plenty, with the boringness of playing the first few minutes of AFJ.
Yeh. Let's get a super piano virtuoso that can shred that first part.

pate 10-05-2006 05:19 PM

Calling all Pers.
Yeh. Let's get a super piano virtuoso that can shred that first part.
Or you could just get one of those self playing pianos to do it. Now that would look cool.
