And when you do that, could you upload 46&2 seperately, for my Featured Song?

whoever "you" are. :p

With Dream Theater I usually listen to individual songs. Awake is becoming my favorite from them. When I saw them live it was just such a good show even with the virtuosity aspect left out. I mean some parts were just such a sonic orgasm and hearing it live it just left me with my jaw to the floor.

denboy 08-29-2005 07:57 AM
Really?!
For me it's like the exact opposite, to listen to their CDs I have to listen to the whole thing, especially with Scenes From a Memory.
.
I listened to the full cd's back when I wasn't bored of them.. But I just got tired of their sound.. I ocasionally listen to The Glass Prison, and some of the songs from Images & Words, but the rest is just too bland for me

kurrpt 08-29-2005 08:02 AM

i have all their albums, and i dont think ive listened to all of them actually

i wont lie, i love petrucci, and thats why i like them hehe

Shadius 08-29-2005 08:07 AM
Dream Theater is probably the best band I've seen live. I mean they just leave you floored. It's not even the technicality of the music that leaves you floored, it's just the music in general. Alot of people were probably impressed by their virtuosity but some how they just really delivered.
I wasn't all that impressed by the Live at Budokan DVD. To be honest, I think Dream Theater are ok. I probably just prefer bands with catchier leads and riffs in the place of technicality. They do have some good songs, but overall I've sorta gone off them. The vocals are hit or miss with me as well.

Moses 08-29-2005 08:07 AM

Also with the mention of Dillinger Escape Plan, the sole purpose of their music is to give a chaotic feeling to the listener.

Also that brings up another band, Meshuggah. Have you ever been listening to them and got like a zoning-out kind of feeling? I read in an interview, that was the sole purpose of their music.

Listen to Symphony X then.

denboy 08-29-2005 08:07 AM

I own a fair amount of DT albums too, and.. There's definately a couple of songs I haven't listened to yet... Hehehe

The whole point of DEP for me, is finding beauty in chaos.. I love DEP

In my opinion Myung owns Petrucci :p

But, they're both great, and both are so much better then I could ever imagine being.

after hearing the singer talk to the audience, id never buy an album

Shadius 08-29-2005 08:10 AM
Listen to Symphony X then.
I do.

They have some fantastic pieces. Though the vocals again are hit or miss with me. Sometimes I just can't stand to listen to them. Also, sometimes I find them to be too technical for the sake of it.
after hearing the singer talk to the audience, id never buy an album
What did he say?

well, Myung's tap solo i saw live on saturday was the sh!t...

but personally, if you see Petrucci going at break neck speed like he was, i dont think you can really compare the 2

Chu 08-29-2005 08:14 AM

Myung has to go at the speed of Petrucci sometimes :p

Moses 08-29-2005 08:14 AM

If you want some awesome tapping, Claypool is the man. I think tapping is really overrated. I mean people see it and are like "OMG taht looks teh hardested!!!1"

kurrpt 08-29-2005 08:14 AM
What did he say?
well, im not sure what the person in general admission said to him, but he made it a point to talk sh!t about him the entire show..

saying something about "how long did it take you to grow that mustache"

also

"..for someone who is old and lives with their mom"

it just seemed really lame to me.

Also, the guitarist apparently had a problem with his sound, feed, or something during the show, and chucks his guitar, which is kinda kewl, but childish. Then when the tech came out to grab the guitar and give him a new one, the guitarist shoved him outta the way.

well, when you can 10 finger tap, you post a video, and i'll finally give this post some merit.

tappin is hard to do CLEAN, and IN TIME

kurrpt 08-29-2005 08:16 AM
Myung has to go at the speed of Petrucci sometimes :p
i totally agree, but he picks with like 4 fingers, which helps...

plus when petrucci is going mach 4, myung isnt.

Shadius 08-29-2005 08:18 AM

I have such a love/hate relationship with Power-Metal in general though. Well, a lot of metal, I suppose. I can't stand the cheesy traditional metal vocal style most of the time, ie: Iron Maiden, and that goes especially for Power-Metal style vocals. It sounds so out-dated to my ears, I just 95% of the time can't get into it.

But on the other hand, I absolutely adore the guitar-work. It's weird though, because if the style changes slightly I can enjoy over-the-top vocals. Like, I dunno, Avenged Sevenfold, or Muse.

Moses 08-29-2005 08:18 AM

You mean 8 finger tapping. Also if you think of piano as 10 finger tapping that's what I'm good at. I play classical and jazz and maybe I'll post a recording sometime of that.

Also to not like a band because some one was talking **** is pretty stupid.

kurrpt 08-29-2005 08:19 AM

yea..

when i heard Fear Factory, i hated the vocal, lyrics, all that..

but there were a few riffs that i could get into a lot. The dudes we met in front of us were BIG fans, so that helped me a little

kurrpt 08-29-2005 08:21 AM

i dont like the band cause the music sucked. I disrespect them as individuals for their behavior :thumb:

personally, i think piano is a lot easier than guitar, bass, etc. Not saying that good pianists arent bad arse, like Rudess

It's possible to 10 finger tap.. Hehe

kurrpt 08-29-2005 08:25 AM
It's possible to 10 finger tap.. Hehe
well, how about we average it to 9 haha

denboy 08-29-2005 08:26 AM

Yeah, getting the left hand thumb into it is a bitch ;)

kurrpt 08-29-2005 08:27 AM

exactly

Darkness 08-29-2005 10:33 AM

I've been working on my tapping a lot latly... getting decent. :p And its a good way to impress the ladies. :naughty:

kurrpt 08-29-2005 10:35 AM

is there a specific example you are working on, or what?

Darkness 08-29-2005 10:37 AM

Not really, mostly improvising in different keys.

kurrpt 08-29-2005 10:38 AM

kewl, do you use ur index or middle finger?

Darkness 08-29-2005 10:39 AM

At first index, but now I'm trying to tap a section, then go back to picking, so I need my index and thumb to hold the pick.

kurrpt 08-29-2005 10:46 AM
At first index, but now I'm trying to tap a section, then go back to picking, so I need my index and thumb to hold the pick.
i had that problem a while ago. EVH used to tuck the pick behind his middle finger, and tap with his index.

As it goes, i can actually tap better with my middle finger. I love practicing sweeps with a tap on the high E string

Darkness 08-29-2005 10:52 AM

Yeah tappings cool stuff.

kurrpt 08-29-2005 10:53 AM

im more into sweeps and legato right now myself. I was heavily into taps for a while, but that move to the way side for now

Darkness 08-29-2005 10:57 AM

Yeah I'm getting into sweeping now to.

kurrpt 08-29-2005 10:57 AM

i had to recently start the ENTIRE way over. I didnt think my left hand technique was where it should be :upset:

repcak 08-29-2005 11:00 AM

Dream Theater is a great band, but i don't like their music: the singer is singing far too high and petrucci is shredding too often.
i prefer non-shredding-progressive-rock/metal

kurrpt 08-29-2005 11:01 AM

the new DT album has hardly any shred.

repcak 08-29-2005 11:04 AM

i listened only to 'images and words', 'scene from a memory' and 'six degrees under'

Darkness 08-29-2005 11:28 AM

you meen 6 degrees of inner turbulance, which is rather awesome. The Great Debate rocks my socks.

kurrpt 08-29-2005 11:29 AM

i think petrucci shreds with class.

check out his solo CD. Theres not much shredding at all

Darkness 08-29-2005 11:30 AM

He does shred with class, some people are always like "OMFG WATS WIT DA CONSTANT WANKIN!?!?!?" I hate that, I love his shredding.
