i slowing got into metallica,
not sure wich song(s) made me like them this much though but i know the first songs by them i heard were fade to black, sandman, unforgiven,St. Anger etc.

i like metallica alot but i haven't even been listening to them for that long
maybe like half a year

KILO5203 02-08-2005 11:44 PM

first song i heard was nothing else matters. i went and bought the black album, and loved it. then i really got into them when i got the first four albums.

metal_milita 02-08-2005 11:48 PM

NEM is such a good song its amazing. I'm obviously not talking about a metal song, but just a regular song.

Beats pop, punk, pop/punk, rap, raggae any day

Huber 02-08-2005 11:50 PM

NEM isn't something I listen to, but it is a great song. It was written by Hetfield to his girlfriend but then someone (Ulrich? I can't remember) told him to use it for the Black Album instead.

That's a great song, even though I don't listen to it much. One of the things off the Black Album that I didn't mind as much. For the most part I don't mind the CD, but I just don't like it nearly as much as their previous stuff.

I agree. That was the first song by them i heard though, and it surprised me actually. Back then i didnt figure they did any slow songs like that.

I'm going to change the topic forgive me for this but I have a question. I find I'm a good guitar player. Most of my solo's are Kirk Hammett solo's I just need a good warm up and I can play just like him. I only have one trouble thought regarding the essence of thrash metal. When I palm mute and I strike low e really fast it sounds good but MetallicA sounds so much better (faster). How do they do it is it both James and Kirk's speed put together, or is it just James, maybe is it something I need to practice? Please any tips on this?

metal_milita 02-08-2005 11:55 PM

A lot of the great clean guitar riffs that james writes are when he is alone and just with himself. Its when he involves everyone else in one big jam session where riffs like "st.anger" are born.
edit: Clean riffs/solo's for One were written by him in 85~ in a truck while he was on break at some cement site/building site.

Uptil Black Album, James played all the riffs and Kirk just recorded solo's. Then it was Bob rocks turn to step up and let Kirk do rythm to get the live feel of Metallica, and to let him contribute to the music writing. they've gone downhill since. Kirk is too jazzy and classical to be able to come up with riffs like Creeping Death, RTL etc that are Metallica's classics.

As for the sound, James uses ESP'S live that are famous for palm mutes quality (right?) and they always have the ever so useful sound editor for albums to really make the palm muted E sound out.

A lot of it has to do with the pickups and amps. Turn it way up, and it will probably sound better. :)

Also, James does a lot of downpicking, and that has a different sound than alternate picking.

MetallicA 02-09-2005 12:03 AM

What do you think it mostly is the equipment or James that get's that good sound.

Ya, down picking has a much better sound to it IMO than alternate picking on the low strings. But for the spider chord riff from MOP, I have no clue how Jamez can pull it off so easily while doing all his crazy performance faces. I have to concentrate like a bitch to just get it while alternate picking.

MetallicA 02-09-2005 12:05 AM

OH ok thanx never mind my last post then thanx "the chosen one". By the way I like down picking more it does have a better sound.

metal_milita 02-09-2005 12:05 AM

James. You can hand Petrucci the same equipment as James, but he'll never get that copyrighted feel and excitement that James can create.

Yeah me too, i have to concentrate. He plays while running around, and not evening paying attention to his guitar.

Yeah, no kidding. I can alternate pick it just fine, but there is no way I can downpick it that well. It would take so much practice for me to get it like that.

Spider Riff? Is that what Mustaine made up? I always wondered what that was.

MetallicA 02-09-2005 12:11 AM

Al right then thanks for the help. New questiong it's just opinion. I'm thinking of what Metallica solo to learn but I can't decide just name one so I can get started.

KILO5203 02-09-2005 12:14 AM

can anyone play the ...and justice for all solo? i love that one

Creeping Death, Ride the Lighting, or Blackened. Go.

Ya well theoretically, if what Mustaine is true about how he made it up. otherwise its credited to James.
I don't exactly know what a spider chord is, and I'm sure its not even a chord but just a left hand "moving" pattern. I guess if you do it really fast, it looks like a spider is crawling..... Thats my theory, because I asked once and no one really responded back.

Holy crap, you must be some guitarist if those are the solos you start on. I don't even want to know what you would end on.

If you're not a crazy *** motherfucker like the chosenone, then try something like
Sanitarium
NEM (doesn't get any easier really)
One (sounds hard, really isn't)
Fade to Black
Practically any other Metallica songs exept for the ones chosenone mentioned + dyers eve.

They aren't that hard. They just take some practice to get down well. I'm not crazy, my friend who nailed Creeping Death in a half an hour is crazy. I have to try to keep up with him becaues I'm in his band. That helps make me a lot better.
Thanks I'll go with Ride.
Good choice.

metal_milita 02-09-2005 12:25 AM

The funnest metallica song I have learned to play has to be the four horsemen. Something about that song is just so....... appealing. Lyrics/message/music/structure, who knows. Its just awsome.

I like playing that song, but I mainly learned it so I could play Mechanix. :)

I want to learn that solo, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

metal_milita 02-09-2005 12:28 AM

Its easy, reminds me a lot of Sanitarium with its bends and random speed changes

led_zep_luvr 02-09-2005 12:32 AM
