about 40 times, why?
I recently have had the urge to see them cuz I'm really liking Fortress. I was wondering if they were good live. |
I've heard recordings of them live on Youtube (as well as having seen them last week), my evaluation is that they've gotten much better at playing their increasingly technical songs live from the early Kezia era to now.
|
They're great live usually. Rody sometimes has some problems singing on key (sometimes he just yells if he cant hear his voice), but the band is usually really tight, especially Arif.

Small trivial question: was I the only one that thought his name was UH-REEF and not ARE-IF until I heard someone say it?
|

Probably. Most people think it's "air-if", including myself at first. The easiest way to remember it is "r/f". |
Has anyone seen them live?
Once. It was awesome. |
Protest link city!
Rody states that Protest is from Toronto, Kezia is screamo-esque!

awesome but dont triple post please, use the edit button.
my friend's feature on Protest comes out this weekend, I'll provide a link/scan when I can, because it's awesome. |
i would very much like to see them but to my knowledge there arent any tours planned in my part of the world :(
|
Don't they usually tour with horrible bands too?
|
Don't they usually tour with horrible bands too?
Yes they do. But it's not their fault that no bands compare to their elite mastery of metal. |

True that. They are definitely at a level above most. |

I probably talked to Rody like 10 minutes after that video was shot, I feel special. 2. Tim's take on beards is pretty funny, I think anywhere he goes his is probably the highest ranking beard in the beard hierarchy. I swear, when I stood next to him for a picture it snarled at me. 3. Is Arif really that much of a stoner or is this entire mushroom thing his way of keeping from actually answering questions about the lyrical content of the album? Also, http://a425.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/12/l_2b576826726c4b33d7cb08565b92ab10.jpg. Rody doing what he does best. |
. Is Arif really that much of a stoner or is this entire mushroom thing his way of keeping from actually answering questions about the lyrical content of the album?
He's not that bad really but his personality is kind of stoneresque in that he's always giggling and whatnot. He doesn't really smoke pot a lot, or do anything much but drink, but I know he'll smoke it if you got it. The mushroom thing is half-truths from what I gather. I've never known him to be too heavy into psychedelics but we're by no means BFFLZFZ so who knows. |
Yeah I haven't spoken to him that many times but when I have, I've figured there was a good possibility he was high... or he's just very very chilled and friendly all of the time, heh.
That being said, the last time I saw him he had just left the Bovine, quite drunk. As for the whole mushrooms thing... I'm not sure what to make of what he said in that article. It's interesting, though. A lot of the Fortress lyrics go over my head, moreso than Kezia did. I kinda, sorta have a basic understanding of the Goddess stuff.. but I wondered if there was more to it. I mean, with Kezia, the guys said they didn't want to write a concept album just for the sake of it - it had to be personal. So, the whole album was really a metaphor for the death and rebirth or transformation of the band. I wondered if there was a broader thing going on with Fortress. Is the whole thing a metaphor for the history of mushrooms? I certainly didn't get that after reading the lyrics, ha. I think that would be cool, but maybe that was just some throwaway comment.. |
I pretty much understand all the Fortress lyrics, and no, it's mnot a metaphor for that, hahaha
He'll smoke pot when Moe has it, ie: anytime he sees Moe, but like I said he's not really the guy to have pot himself. Curious, but what went over your head? |
I don't really get the lyrics.
They went from an anti-government punk band to this. Wasn't Kezia a concept album about killing God, and Fortress is about killing a goddess or something? Sorry, but I haven't really looked too much into their lyrics. |
Killing God? Killing a Goddess?
You really fail. The lyrics, especially on Fortress, are one of the best parts. |
I don't really get the lyrics.

Sorry, but I haven't really looked too much into their lyrics.
Well, that's why then, try reading them more than once briefly, how you can not get them is beyond me, it's not a concept album or anything of that sort, just stories really, and tales of history exaggerated. Besides, some of the lines are simply the best I've ever heard in metal, 'Did you come here to kill or did you come here to die?', 'if a mortal stands against you strike him down with sleight of hand, and if the heavens stand against you then the gods themselves must be damned' etc... |
They aren't always that straight-forward though. Bloodmeat and Bone Marrow are the most story-driven with their east Asian historical fiction but like, Palms Read is almost totally abstract.

And Spoils, it talks mostly about abstract concepts like ineffability and the futility of language. For those of you who don't know: Ineffability-To say that something is that cannot or should not be expressed in spoken words (such as with the concept of true love or a religious taboo). Proof: "Every word that's ever written will fall short of its intent. Even spoke or sung or screamed it will betray what they have meant" and "Language is the heart's lament, a weak attempt to circumvent the loneliness inherent in the search for permanence." I don't even have to break down, its written so plainly. Any feeling or thought ever conceived loses some of its original meaning when it is conveyed to someone else because you can't make anyone feel and think exactly what you do. |
I think the killing God thing was just a random thought developing from the line from No Stars Over Bethlehem about plunging a dagger into God's chest and marveling at the damage it could create.
The Goddess killing theory came simply from the last track being titled "Goddess Gagged." |
It's not a theory if you haven't even read the lyrics.
|
I've read them, I just haven't looked into them and examined every aspect of what each phrase means.
|
I got Calculated Use Of Sound the other day. I haven't put it on my iPod yet though. What should I expect?
|
Back then they still played punk rock and had passion. Expect that.
|
Back then they still played punk rock and had passion. Expect that.
Oh snap! Somebody aint gonna like that. |
They're still pretty passionate but yeah. Expect raw, young post-hardcore/punk with really annoying but fitting vocals and surprisingly tight instrumentation considering their youth. If you got the re-release, which I guarantee you did, expect "Soft Targets" to sound random and out of place. This is because it is random and out of place and should not have been put in that place on the re-release (or on the re-release at all).

Oh ok thanks. |
seeing these guys in 2 hours 30 minutes

Kattun, seeing your edit. Set your timezone in the User CP. Derp.
|
Sounds like you'll have fun for 40 minutes and then writhe in pain for whatever duration the other bands play for.
|
Would it be possible for someone to send me the instrumental version of Fortress? I have a friend who says he loves the riffs but isn't a fan of the screaming and I told him I'd try and get the instrumental version.
Ellman.Ben at gmail.com Please and thank you. |
Meh protest was alright but dam rody is boring, that aside the sound of the venue sucked
they opened with a 30 min set..so don;t expect much, they might had huge moshpits going in canada but in US well at this show they were basically nothing. there was like only 15/300-400 people who actually went with them including me...a moshpit started and ended within 4 seconds.....rody talked about using death metal vocals during intercourse and he licked some panties that was thrown on the stage A day to remember came next..and OHHHH MAN THE SCENE KIDS GOT CRAZY protest didnt even have securite guards..but the guards came in for ADTR..one guard couldnt even enjoy himself cause he knew all the words but he had to control the crowd surfing during the whole set... I had to go after that cause burger king was calling me...Oh ya I saw arif..I tried to think of a good conversation starter like WDF does dissentience mean but meh I am thinking he is prob tired of questions related to music oh ya i bought a hard copy to fortress for 5 bucks from timba.....ya that about it.... |
rody is the most boring frontman evah
what?
dissentience
1. dissenting, esp. from the opinion of the majority. –noun 2. a person who dissents. |
ya i guess that first quote was over the top I guess i expected to much from them
|
If they opened (which is insulting to them) it's no wonder it wasnt amazing. You expect a great set when the crowd is still filing in?
|
How does a band like Protest end up opening? That's sacrelige.
|
It's like why bands like Unexpect end up opening for Nile. More exposure. If they tour with shitty bands, 9 times out of 10 those shitty bands have large (especially for metal) fanbases.
Then again, when we saw Unexpect open for Trail Of Tears, all 12 of us there were for Unexpect. So I suppose those die hard fans do show up. |
