Whats your name in JK3? And what servers do you play on? I usually only played on BWN servers. I was in top 5 for a while, before I quit. I'm sure my account is deleted by now.

And to all you Tribes 2 bashers... get good and you'll like it :-P Plus, I only like classic servers. Its much faster-paced and takes more skill.

I...um....wow...

So anyone who's been paying attention knows that I'm in a band now (my first ever). They played an open mic at this brewery/bar place, without me since I don't know the songs yet. They are actually good as far as their playing goes, but we need a new singer :upset: I'll be playing my first gig next thursday at the next open mic and as of right now, I'm strangely not that nervous. Maybe I will be when it gets closer though :thumb:

You know, the last thing I wanted to do was discourage anyone from majoring in music because of the double bass.

Not all colleges are likethat though.. but they are probably few and far between. Which is why I SAID to check out the colleges and their options. And I also SAID that a good portion allow auditions on electric, so long as you understand that you will really be learning the double. And I SAID that most colleges have a few of their own Double's that you can use. That is what I SAID. :p

Now, onto the topic of why there is no electric bass major....

*sigh*

The two main forms of music are Classical and Jazz. Both are difficult. Both are equal (no fighting which one is harder.) Both take great dicipline... and while the two have some different aspects, they compliment each other. The well rounded well educated musician knows both.

All other music decends from these two genres.

Now... we know there is no "rock music" major. What would you learn from it? What would be core class elements? Theory I suppose, but it might be somewhat limited... Lessons... Music history...

Ok... now... you can get those things in either a Classical Major or a Jazz Major.

People who are mainly interested in playing the main stream forms of music aren't looking to go to college... college wont help them get "big." That piece of paper saying you graduated from rock school isn't going to make a record company sign you.. it's not going to get you gigs... ( Can you imagine going into a bar or club with your band's demo to submitt it and the guy wants to see your degree in rock?! )

I'm not trying to bash rock or whatnot. I'm giving you the reason why there isn't main stream music as a major.

As for the electric bass.. it is not a "traditional" instrument... which cannot be used in classical music (unless 21st century + ) and is used only in some subgenres of jazz...
Also, if you can play the double, you can play electric. Are there some stylistic elements missing? Yes... slap and pop... which is not too hard to learn. And even the double bass teachers at colleges can play electric, and I'm sure most wouldn't mind you forgoing a double lesson for an electric lesson. I know a few of my classmates did that.

I will say this... there is a benefit in majoring in Jazz over classical. (Mind you I did both.) At most colleges, the jazz major requires you to also have classical training. So... you get two lessons a week. One in Jazz, one in classical. THAT is technically an awesome deal... most people hate it and don't see the point.. but I can. There are certain aspects of classical that jazz can't teach you and vice versa.

I told you. I told you all!

ShelBel 07-30-2004 05:41 PM

I can't learn theory on my own, I've tried. I *so* need a class, and the local community college (where I now work, YAY) is offering one in the fall- but its at 1pm in the afternoon, during my shift. Why oh why couldn't it start at 230p????

Crap. Anybody know where/how I could find a decent bass teacher? I live in BFE Brainerd MN, fercryin'outloud! *sobs*

Radiobass81 07-30-2004 05:54 PM

^^ Maybe you and theory where never meant to be (?).

ShelBel 07-30-2004 05:57 PM

Meh. I figure if I can bend my brain around hexadecimal, binary, IP addressing and variable length subnet masks, I can learn theory. I'm a multimedia learner though- I need sound and interaction with another human being and not just a book.

Check out www.musiciansconnection.com That's where I found mine, but I'm not sure if many are listed there. I searched the internet for a private instructor and it took me about 2 months to find one. And it's a little expensive, but it's better than a class.

Casual Stuff and more.. Part 4

Well, here we are, part 4.

My second week from hell has essentially ended.. with me sitting here wondering where the hell is my BF (I haven't heard from him since Wed. and today is his birthday... ).

So to recap this week: My computer at work broke, leaving me without the music I need to finish the CDs for my songwriters class... in which the CDs are late, and I'm in deep **** because of it...

I continued to get yelled at for the things I was getting yelled at last week. (I mean come on... I got the point the first time)

Two employees were fired at work, which is half our retail staff. Which means, now I stopped getting yelled at... and asked to work more.. and cover major assage. Which is ok, cause I need the money. Because all of my private students except one dropped for the summer leaving me $300 short each month.

THEN.. my brother got fired on wednesday night... the ****ers... that job almost killed him.. working about 90-100 hours a week (there is only 168 hours a week.. and typically, you work about 40 hours a week in a full timejob..) He basically did all the hard work and then, when the store wasn't as productive as they hoped (after only being open for 4 months) they ditched him.

And the cleaning continued.. cause the realtor came today. Which turned out ok. :)

So.. what is everyone up to this weekend? I'm... you guessed it.. working. :(

Hm... well.. I'm going to leave this thread as a "getting to know you" thread. Answer the following questions :p
