Its been a while, but here it is. Temporary Peace. And this is anathema.

Starts with some ocean noise, with clean guitar playing a 6 note riff. Nice and slow, then a nice vocal begins. The track is a lil choppy, i dunno why, could by the song, or my comp or the reencoding. meh whatever.

At like 1:23 or so, drums and bass enter. The bass here is very cool, its not following anything, just playing its own part. The voice comes back, its very much like some of the APC songs i like. There is an acoustic (?) scrape in the background as well. Then a female voice enters, then do some overlaying. Its very tranquil.

Chorus begins, it makes me want to find the lyrics and understand them. But not now. the music is very ambient, very good rock.

And thats pretty much the whole song. ill give it an 8, out of 10.

My Dying Bride - A Kiss to Remember

Well, I have heard of this band, but I have never actually listened to them. I am not the biggest fan of Metal, but I will try to rate the song fairly.

The song opens up with a bass lines; effects are noticeable. Two guitars, and the drums enter very quickly. Distortion rules each of the notes, except for the lead lines, which do not seem to spectacular. The singer enters. He has a very deep voice, not very appealing to me. The drummer is working the pedal a little too much if you ask me. A bit over the top.

A violin (could be viola) enters, it is merely playing in the background (yet in a lead fashion), while the drummer whacks the toms and the rhythm guitarist plays chords. The singer enters once again, and the drummer has lightened up, but still doesn’t seem to fit that well. However, he does performs some nice fills.

The lyrics do not particularly stand out to me, but I haven’t been paying complete attention to the. The group now seems to be entering some kind of bridge. The tempo has slowed down, and the lead guitarist’s lead lines are much more interesting than they once were. A piano enters (or seems more noticeable) and seems to conclude the track, but then the band enters once again, finishes the song.

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Concrete Jungle

I've heard a bit of Marley and didn't like it.

Begins with a bass drum and some quiet guitars in the back. Oh and a hammond organ. The mix is strange. The bass side is too loud. Maybe that's just the compression on this file. The annoying reggae off beat thing starts. Then the singer (Marley I'm guessing) comes in. THe hammond organ is just sort of floating around. This stupid off beat crap is starting to really get to me.

I don't understand why this stuff is regarded so highly. It is getting very, very boring. There is a guitar solo that is alright I suppose. It sounds like it was recorded really ludly but that doesn't fit because everything else is so mellow. The chord progression is cool when I listen to it closely but the rhythm is just so annoying. And then a fade out. That is lame.

I don't like this song and still don't like reggae or Marley.

Slumber - Rapture

Opens with with some cool drum work (I want a tab for it ;) ), and then the vocals enter and I'm slightly put off. I don't like them too much, but they are kind of low key and don't over-shadow the rest of the song which makes up for it. It moves slowly until a bridge comes while a quiet guitar and a steady drum beat holds the song up until a guitar solo starts. After the solo you hear something like when the vocals entered. At around 3:20 the song is carried by a simple guitar riff and some nice symphonic sounds in the background. Everything starts to slowly gather and pick up towards the end as some nice singing joins the song.

I was a little put-off in the begining, but as I listened it got better and better. I liked the song, it was a good listen, but I don't find myself wanting to listen to more of it. It was just missing something that I kept wanting to hear that I can't point out, and without that something I'll give it a

My experience of Satch is limited, so I only have a vague idea what to expect.
Joe Satriani - Big Bad Moon - 5:15

Starts off with some spacey-sounding guitar; nothing impressive, nothing meant to be. Reminds me very much of some Spastic Ink intros on Ink Compatible, actually. Anyway, it soon resolves itself, after a drum roll intro, into a pretty great rock riff. I like this so far.

Vocals come in; nothing special at the moment, but they're not bad. It's got something resembling character, which is a good thing. Satriani (I'd assume, anyway) goes off into a rather fast solo just before the minute. It seems similar in style to the kind of thing that would normally annoy me for being over the top, but it's handled really well, as in, it still seems part of the song.

We go back to that really nice riff, and those vocals, for another verse before there's another solo guitar section. It seems to be kind of building out of the riff, rather than just being created from nowhere, and since I like the riff anyway, that can only be a good thing.

And then we have the same thing again to finish off the song, except that the vocals carry on (kind of) over the top of the solo parts. So nothing much to add there.

9/10. I really enjoyed it.

Farmakon - Loosely of Amoebas

K, here we go:
Starts with a fast, but fairly standard riff followed by a quick entry of the vocalist. Low in the mix, but decent overall. Stabbed power chords follow, but nothing special.

Here we go now, the clean vocals enter, and it reminds me of Opeth's Orchid album, he's a very good clean singer, which is surprising.

Now we have a weird, almost funk like section, with a bouncy bass line and a cool little guitar riff.

This is followed by another heavy section, very similar to the first. Catchy riff, but getting a little repetitive.

A fake out with a clean vocal, heavy power chords and a little strange interlude between the two of them.

Guitar solo, expertly done; not too flashy or too long to lose interest in it. More clean singing, all well done and a quick ending.

Overall, while the death metal sections weren't anything special, the combination of the different styles warrants a listen. 8.5/10

Starts out fast with the guitar, building in up energy. Drums come pounding in. Slows down going into the first riff. Singer comes in.

Guitar fades out for a second, lets me hear the percussion better. Returns to the first guitar part. The riffs that follow sound simple, yet very enjoyable similar to the begining riffs but changed in a few parts.

Builds energy like in the begining, then wam everything drops into a new riff and then changes into a slow reggae-like beat. Singers voice is clearer now. Very nice voice.

Guitar solo is alright, a bit weak sound wise. Goes back to the climbing guitar part in the begining.

Very good song. I especially like the ups and downs of the song. The transistions are suprising and caught my attention.

Toast Machine

The song opens up with a rather funky beat, and a nicely done lead by the bass. There seems to be no real intro; the song gets things going right from the beginning. The bass player’s playing and tone seems a bit messy (If that makes sense), but I believe it is technically nicely done. I think I here some slap, pop, and various other techniques. I’m not a bass player, so I may be wrong on some of the terms.

Around fifty-five seconds, the bass has really gotten better sound wise; I’m guessing he is slapping. The drumming is also quite well done. The drummer doesn’t seem to be trying to show off, but he keeps a nice steady beat and plays few fills on (what I seems to be) a high-hat and china crash.

Very short song (One minute and forty-six seconds), but I am satisfied. It sounds a little bit like Primus, especially when the bass starts to pick up. I though it was pretty good.

Jimmy Cliff

I think he's reggae, almost positive. Let's see how it turns out.

Starts out very mellow, the singer has a very soft voice.

I like how the music gets louder in the second verse, the drums kick in more.

AS we move on to the chorus, it continues in the same style. I think I detect horns, at least the second time I do. His band seems to mesh very well. Nothing special about the lyrics thus far, more of a relaxed song. I think I hear some Rastafarian messages (assuming he's Jamaican) unless I'm getting the wrong message out of the song.

AS we move into the outro, It's the same kind of thing, but with Gospel-like singers in the backround. The song starts to fade and I hear some flute. Overall not bad.

In conclusion, I liked the song. It had good music; a very nice groove to it. My problem with it, as with other Carribbeain(sp?) influenced music, is that it is pretty repetetive.

Jack Johnson - Banan Pancakes

Jack Johnson is awesome but I've only heard the singles.

So this song begins with what I assume is a very Jack Johnson-y guitar part. There is rain in the background. Then it pops into poppy song. It's pretty happy and I like the lyrics. The song has a very positive feel-good vibe about. It's not my favorite song I've heard by him by any means. It's not bad, it's just not as good as some of the other stuff I've heard.

His voice doesn't sound as good as I remember. He's singing higher or something. I like how chilled out he is. The music just radiates chill. He should write the theme song for world peace.

Bah-dah bup bah-dah.... I'm singing along already. It's so catchy and easy. Not very complicated and a bit repetitive but it's not a very long song and it's very enjoyable. I think I'll get more by him finally. Not much else to say. It's all pretty simple.

Sorry for the delay, flying things kept distracting me.

I've heard another song by these guys before, and it was odd. If this one's anything like that one, I'm not sure how good of a review this'll be.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Phthisis - 3:44

Starts off with God-knows-what noise. Sounds almost like whale noise, but orchestrated. COuld well be strings of some kind, and they're soon followed by some twangy guitar and bass, and various other sounds following the same pattern as them. Vocals come in, and they're almost Bjork-like; similar style anyway, if not actually Bjork herself. I like them, anyway.

From around 1:10 the background music changes, to a different rhythm of multiple instruments (and what I'm now fairly sure are strings in the background), and occasional what sounds like some number greater than 1 guys shouting "sah!" or something. The female vocals continue more or less the same over the top of this, though.

Okay, after that, there's even more going on. This is getting harder and harder to describe play-by-play. It's all good, though; another voice has joined out Bjork imitator, a male voice, I think. They may well be speaking a different language, I can't really tell, and the drums are going somewhat crazy. Other than that I can't really tell what's what.

The song's getting to the end now (it's rather short for what it is; when I think avant-garde, I think 20-minute Haino guitar abuse sessions and such), and there's a moaning and wailing - the kind you'd expect from souls trapped in some kind of torment in a bad film - and now (again), what seems to be a high rising tone, like a kettle whistling, is in the background. What seems to be one of the most solid riffs of the song so far has started playing, only about fifteen seconds from the end. Maybe it isn't actually any more "solid", and just seems so because of the absence of lots of other sounds.

The riff "da-dun!"s to a close, and the song ends with an olde time sample, a in a language other than English, and then some more trapped souls vocalising.

Well, avant garde definitely. Pretty good though. 8/10.

Einsturzende Neubauten - Ende Neu (Live)

I've been wanting to hear this for a while.

Whooshes open it, must be the air compressor I've heard about. It goes on for a while, and some light effects are used on the sound. About a minute in a marchy bass comes in playing the same note.. twice at once it sounds like. The air compressor stops.

Synth strings and mostly German vocals start up now, they go along with the bass, kind of soft, but then some percussion drops in to give it a constant driving feel. It sounds like a war theme, and more tribal than industrial. Some bits are louder and fierce, which adds the goodness of variation.

Now this goes on for a bit too, through the soft-intense cycles. The harsh sound of the spoken German language makes it work, and the guy's strange deep voice makes it even better.

At around 4:30, most of it backs off, just the bass is left playing it's usual riff. A couple of instruments come back lightly, then suddenly all of them are back and pushing the machine forward again. This part is the last bit of the song, it seems much like what was happening before in the fierce part. Then the song ends at a good place to end a song... crowd cheers.

Once again, EN have been interesting to listen to, I thought this was going to be minimalistic, but the driving feel of it was good. And for the small amount of instruments used, it did rather well, and managed to not sound like common music.
Overall, I thought it was pretty good. They sound good live too.
