Hey Happy. What did you think of them Who albums? Never heard back from you and haven't seen you in this thread....
|
Yeah, sorry about that :(
I kept meaning to but kept forgetting. I have to say these albums have opened a side of The Who up that I didn't really knew existed. And I love 'em. My favourite of the 3 would have to be Quadrophenia, I'm in love with almost every track off it. I couldn't possibly choose a favourite. Then it would be Who's Next. I love the different versions of the songs, each unique in their own way. This has my favourite Who song on it, Baba O' Reily. If Live at Leeds never had "live" in the title, it would've taken me a while to guess. They sound brilliant Live, although I'm not a great fan of extending songs live (like My generation) but it still sounds good and the Who pull it off well (of course). Thanks for the albums John, and I'm sorry I didn't reply earlier. |
No, not at all. My pleasure. I was just wondering, as I noticed you posting around and it came to mind. Glad you enjoyed them. The Who are a unique and interesting band, to say the least.
And they have all new material coming soon. Apparently two releases this year. An EP and a full length CD. I'm hoping for the best. Or at least a good go of it... |
How could not tell Leeds was live? It's probably the most live sounding album I've heard, although with the outstanding sound quality I guess it might be confusing. I guess knowing the Who's sound helps too, heh. They could never quite pull of such an energetic and intense performance in the studio.

I thought that Live at Leeds was recorded on really crappy sound equipment.
But even so, it still sounds phenomenal. |
^Yeah. On the original vinyl recording they even had a disclaimer saying there was nothing wrong with your phonograph, the occasional click and popping sounds on of the recording were normal :-\
Lunch, how do you like Empty Glass? |

Lunch, how do you like Empty Glass?
Yeah, and on the new CDs, it says 'Pops and cracks have been corrected!' or something along those lines. |
yeah, Live at Leeds' sound quality, considering its 1970, is absolujtly fantastic
|
Im looking to buy a who album. Its a shame Australia doesnt sell the Who album "Quadrophenia". Instead they have this soundtrack for the movie thats missing a few tracks.
But anyway should i buy Live at Leeds the original version or remastered? Ive heard the remastered version is poorly done and the original is better |
The remastered version is fine. It's most likely the vinyl purest who complain about it. L@L has long been thought of as an untouched, un-enhanced gem. A diamond in the rough, if you will. So digitally cleaning it up does not sit well with some. But they are nit picking. It's just as raw, dirty, and explosive as the original, and then some. Has all those great extra cuts, too. IMO it's essential.
There is also a "Deluxe Edition" that features a full performance of Tommy on a second disc. It cost over twice as much though, and may not be of interest to you or worth the extra cash right off. I would say the expanded remastered edition hits the sweet spot. |
im having a hard time deciding whether to buy live at leeds (remastered one cd only) or "whos next"
i think im gona go with leeds |
Who's Next is awfully good, too. If you want to leave your email I can upload the Bonus Disc from that one and link it to you. It's a somewhat inconsistent live performance at The Young Vic Theater from '71. I say inconsistent because they were still working out the tunes from Who's Next for the stage. The album hadn't even been released yet.
I would hook you up with Leed's, too. But my version is an old 64Kbps rip. So the sound quality is lacking, to say the least. Although someone else on the board said they were going to send me some fresh download links for it. So if you wait I might have it later. Not sure if the links work yet, though. Because they are kind of dated. I can't help you out with Who's Next, as I have a vinyl copy and that's it. |

The fall's going to be a busy time for me, but I'm still going to that. Clapton/Trucks are here in the fall too .
LaL sound quality is amazing. So clear and powerful. The deluxe edition is the way to go. That's the only version I own. |
Thoughts on Empty Glass, robo?
|
Pfft...third page.
I have Empty Glass on vinyl. (as it turns out, my uncle is a huge Who fan, a fact that I didn't know untill recently, and that the vinyls I found in my garage were actually all his). I don't really know why I haven't listened to it yet, but I will now due to all the talk about it in this thread. I really have to give props to my uncle, for I got into The Who due to all of his records that I found. Seriously, every Who album besides My Generation, and some Townsend solo's on vinyl. Pretty sweet. |
I think the first thing I'm gonna buy when I get a new job is a Who DVD. Suggestions? I just really need something to see the band all in action. I think I've been listening to more Who this past week than anything else.

Kids Are Alright, Isle of Wight......hell, even Woodstock!
|
Which one is Keith at his best in? Or is that a safe bet with all of them?

http://www.petetownshend.co.uk/projects/thewho/main/diary/display.cfm?id=312&zone=news
i'm excited :D i don't know if this has already been established here or not but on a local radio station they said that they planned on recording each concert and selling it on cd after the show i think that's one of the coolest ideas i've heard in a long time...i've wished I had a recording of a number of concerts i've been to in the past, especially McCartney and Van Halen |
^Yes, Pete has a number of things planned, I believe. It sounds like it will be fun. I think they are going to allow camcorders/digital video cameras in certain sections, also. Make your own bootleg kind of things. And some shows I believe have been available through the website from previous tours. But this promises to be a whole new thing.
I sure hope the new record is good...Two new ones are coming, apparently. :) |
Which one is Keith at his best in? Or is that a safe bet with all of them?
He's probably at his best in the Isle of Wight DVD, since that is a straight forward performance from 1970, a prime year for the Who. Still, I find the Kids Are Alright to be a better DVD overall. It's great because it includes all stages of the Who (up until 1978 when Moon died), and the quality is outstanding. Isle of Wight is similar to Leeds, except that the sound quality and performance are a little weaker overall. |
What Lunch said.
|
Empty Glass is good. I like the songwriting on it a lot. It's more personal like on The Who By Numbers. I wonder what it would sound like if the whole band recorded it.
I also need some Who dvds. I just need music dvd's in general though. I have a very weak DVD collection. And no Who:( |
You better up your game Robo, right now you're a JV Who fan :p
|
I know:(
http://www.gigwise.com/news.asp?contentid=17727 Pete's the man. He probably could outplay them. JXD might have posted this a while ago as it sounds vaguely familiar but I just discovered it. |
i've heard some people who think IoW is better........
anyways, I was on Youtube, watching a video of See Me, Feel Me from 1979 for some charity thing. Kenny Jones is a good drummer, he has great feel and is in the pocket, and has a rather large drumset, but why can't he do anything other then snare fills! I swear he never touched his toms. He'd do like two bar fills that consited of 16th notes on the snare drum. It annoyed me to no end! |

JXD might have posted this a while ago as it sounds vaguely familiar but I just discovered it.
hahaha No, I've never seen that. True, though. As much as I like The White Stripes, Townshend just kicks arse. I lol'd at the comment left by someone calling him a "EGOTISTICAL BITCH". 'Cause I know Pete would wholeheartedly agree even if just to pwn the loser and laugh his head off doing it. You cannot fuc.k with Peter Townshend. |
Here is something for those of you who don't visit Pete's site very often:
http://www.petetownshend.co.uk/diary/display.cfm?id=282&zone=pr http://www.petetownshend.co.uk/diary/display.cfm?id=279&zone=pr Just a nice cover photo and little interview. Pete says they will be doing the classics, some rarities, and not too much new stuff on the tour. I'm hoping for at least four new songs. I hope so. Be that as it may, he said it would be a different batch of songs each night. So that's good news. He has the musicians, he may as well use them. Also The Who part of the site will go down before the tour and re-emerge a whole new thing. And Webcasts from some shows will be offered. So that's just some of the latest. Polydor get's the new stuff delivered June 28. Pete sounds as enthusiastic as ever. Mini Opera and full album on the way. The Who are back. :) |
