Rush30 01-04-2006 05:29 PM
Rush is like... Dream Theater. They don't focus enough on songwriting. It's all wankery in it's own respect.

They wish they were King Crimson.
Buddy your a joke dream theater and king crimson have no comparason to rush...neil peart is a drum wizard...alex lifeson is a guitar legend and geddy is by fart the best bass player in the world think about it rush has so many good songs including anthem, fly by night, working man, xanadu and everything

rockinbass17 01-04-2006 10:13 PM
No I haven't seen it but.............

Lately I just love Rush. I could listen to them so many times.
Working Man is one of my favorite songs.
Geddy's awesome but what kind of name is that?
Geddy Lee is not his real name. It was something really long and didn't roll off the tongue too well, so he changed it to something memorable.

Are you sure that wasn't Alex Lifeson's? His real name is Alex Zivojinovich.

Geddy Lee is "Geddy" because his heavily Jewish mother could never say "Gary" correctly, and so it stuck.

The long name thing refers to Alex, though, you're right. But yeah, Geddy Lee isn't his real name either.

deathscreamingsheep 01-08-2006 03:34 PM

Thought I'd bring this thread back to the surface.

I've started listening to Rush again now: I absolutely love their bass work.

Interesting. Do you know if Alex is jewish?

deathscreamingsheep 01-09-2006 12:11 PM

By the way, how difficult is the bass part in YYZ. I was thinking of learning it.

It's considered one of the best bass performances of prog rock, so my guess is that it's fairly challenging. I know that Rush's lead guitar parts aren't too bad, until you start getting into the solos like La Villa Strangiato.

Give it a shot, see if you can do it. Doesn't hurt to try.

The Clansman...secrets 01-09-2006 11:44 PM

Me, I just hope that Rush is going to tour sometime again soon...maybe 2007.

Futuro 01-09-2006 11:50 PM
Me, I just hope that Rush is going to tour sometime again soon...maybe 2007.
That would be great! I have yet to see them live :upset: Definetly my favorite band in the prog genre.

Maggot Dream 01-10-2006 02:13 PM

July 26, 2006, Red Rocks Ampitheater, CO.

I'm gonna be so pissed if it doesn't happen.

But if it does.....:chug:

I already can play the guitar part. Bass is a bit of a secondary instrument to me: but even if I can't play the whole thing I should be able to make some pretty good exercises from it.

Futuro 01-10-2006 04:50 PM
I saw Neil's drum set today.Sweet mother of all things drum related. Is he like god?
Yeah its crazy. Three years back with my first band, we covered some rush tunes. That acted as a cornerstone for my improvisation skills. (Seeing as I only had a 6 piece kit with 5 cymbals)

Polish or something, I would think.

Geddy is a beast. I wish I could play like him.

Anyone care to upload some Rush for me? I especially like the old school stuff, pre-Moving Pictures. I currently own Caress of Steel and Moving Pictures on CD, and Fly By Night and Permanent Waves on vinyl.

Email address is mistergroovy1023@gmail.com. Or if you want to trade on AIM, screen name is Mistergroovy1023.
Are you sure that wasn't Alex Lifeson's? His real name is Alex Zivojinovich.
Alex does use "Lifeson" as his stage name. I guess no one wants to attempt to pronounce Zivojinovich. If I remember correctly, he is os Icelandic descent, and Zivojinovich roughly translates to English as "Son of Life", so thus Lifeson.

BludgeonySteve 01-19-2006 06:19 PM

I like Lifeson better :) (prolly because I can pronounce it)

BludgeonySteve 01-19-2006 08:22 PM

Yep, yesir indeed. Rush is good.

Don't let this thread die :(

Jacaranda 01-19-2006 08:29 PM

teh led senger sonds lyike hez gat no balz.

I reckon Neil should do very well in the Drummer poll. Better then Alex in guitar and Geddy in Vocals/Bass one can hope....

BludgeonySteve 01-19-2006 09:21 PM

Alex and Geddy are under-appriciated.

NicetoKnowyou 01-20-2006 03:20 PM

Permanent Waves or Counterparts would be my choices.

deathscreamingsheep 01-20-2006 05:02 PM

Is it just me or is YYZ one of the most satisfying songs to play ever on guitar or bass?

Cain 01-20-2006 05:05 PM
Is it just me or is YYZ one of the most satisfying songs to play ever on guitar or bass?
The solo and the intro riff in particular are great on guitar. On bass, any Rush instrumental is satisfying, because it means you play closer to God than other people.

classicrockman 01-20-2006 06:16 PM

I just listened to the song "2112" in its entirety. :)

BludgeonySteve 01-20-2006 11:58 PM

I've done that about 30 times. Good stuff.

Maggot Dream 01-21-2006 01:59 AM

A Farewell to Kings is quickly becoming one of my favorite Rush songs. I never really realized how awesome it is.
A Farewell to Kings is quickly becoming one of my favorite Rush songs. I never really realized how awesome it is.
Yeah, the whole album is great. I love Xanadu.

BludgeonySteve 01-21-2006 12:47 PM

XAN-A-DU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coolest song on he album.

On my windoms media player list, cygnus x-1 is at the end of Kings and then the next album is hemispheres so I go from x-1 to Cygnus X-1 book 2 hemipheres directly. Pretty awesome.
