Endless Obsession 05-04-2005 05:09 PM

I just saw the Master of Puppets video that DT did. I noticed that Mike Portnoy had 3 bass drums. Why is this?

Because there's 2 seats behind his kit, due to the amount of equipment he has, and he had to have 3 bass drum to be able to play double bass on both seats.

I love the song In the Name of God, it has great lyrics IMO. I also can't wait for Octavarium

For anyone who is turned off by LaBrie's vocals...

When I first got into DT he did nothing but get in the way for me. I thought his vocals were nothing but unnecessary. I relished any instrumental sections, and cringed at any vocal sections (minus a few tracks ie. The Spirit Carries On, and 6:00).

However, after giving When Dream and Day Unite a thorough listen, and hearing how Dominici sang...I now have a whole new appreciation for LaBrie. It's laughable how bad the vocals were before he came along. Now I actually like his voice, and I would suggest checking out WDADU to anyone that doesnt.

And now, consequently, I am seriously considering picking up The Element of Persuasion. Does anyone have any feedback on that album that may be useful to me before buying it? I like the heavier side of DT, and I've heard that it leans a little towards that sound.

Any thoughts and comments would be much appreciated!

Thanks :thumb:

ps...seriously. Dominici had to have been a joke.

The JoZ 05-05-2005 07:04 PM

^^ This man speaks the truth. Dominici was a horrible vocalist.

I understand LaBrie might not be for everyone, but compared to Dominici, the man is super awesome as opposed to just awesome

Chu 05-05-2005 07:07 PM

Or if the vocals just drive you away completely, why not get Liquid Tension Experiment

Strum 05-05-2005 07:08 PM

I bought a DT album about a month ago, I don't really like it. :(

Too much like Metallica. :-/

Was it Train of thought?

Strum 05-05-2005 07:13 PM
Was it Train of thought?
I don't remember, I think it is.

It had like 5 songs on it, if that helps.

White Goodman 05-05-2005 07:14 PM

Well I mean Dream Theater is influenced a lot by Metallica. That may be why they have covered the entire Master of Puppets cd live. I think that says it all right there.

Did it have two discs?

If so, it was Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.

If not, did it have covers? If so, it was A Change of Seasons.

If it was neither, it was Train of Thought

Strum 05-05-2005 07:27 PM

It must have been Train of Thought. :)

But don't get me wrong, it's not a bad album. It just didn't seem to have anything original to offer.

Chu 05-05-2005 08:27 PM

if it sounds like Metallica, it's asif Metallica all got better
The intro to Honour Thy Father for example, I don't think we could ever see Lars do anything like that.

Magicaltroll 05-05-2005 09:49 PM

Man, in the Glass Prison, the solo around like 2:20 is just plain awesome.

Just thought I would share :D

EDIT- What album is the song Trail Of Tears on? I love this song, but I only have the Live In Budokan version :/

the song is on "falling Into Infinity." I need to listen to that album more even though at first, I think it sounds a bit cheaper than the rest of their stuff.

I don't know how DT sounds a lot like metallica, but I know they were influenced by them in some ways.

anyways, if you wanna get a good album by DT, get "Images and Words" or "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence," I think you might like those two.

I remember hearing JP on the "5 years in a life time" commentary saying that it was really well produced.

It's just two drumkits combined together. One is a double bass drum kit. the other is a single bassdrum kit (it has a double chain pedal nonetheless).

IvortheEngineDriver 05-06-2005 09:35 AM

Anyone know what album "Cover My Eyes" is off of? They do a live recording on the "5 years in a lifetime" DVD at that Rotterdam Jam. I really like the song, would like better production. Can anyone help me?

Yeah, it's got some great tracks on there but the other half is just... meh. Lines In The Sand is one of my fav DT tracks though.

Apparently these are the Octavarium track times.

The Root Of All Evil - 8.07
The Answer Lies Within - 5.26
These Walls - 6.59
I Walk Beside You - 4.29
Panic Attack - 7.16
Never Enough - 6.33
Sacrificed Sons - 10.42
Octavarium - 24.00

The title track = wow.

juggalotricksta 05-06-2005 01:47 PM
Where did you get those times from? It looks promising either way...obviously track times alone don't tell you much about songs or albums, but while it was unlikely that they were really going to break away from long, epic songs, it's always reassuring to see that they haven't gone mad and made an album full of 4 minute songs. Anything over 20 minutes is massive, obviously, so it's nice to see that they've got something like that on there as well. It sounds stupid, but it always amazes me that individual members can remember their parts to perfection in songs that long, especially given the complexity of the music that DT play. Anyway, good stuff.
Nicely put. I still cant understand how they can remember all that stuff. It blows me away every time.

If you are able to find a copy of their Fan Club CD from 1998, the same live version of "Cover My Eyes" from the "Livetime" DVD is on there. The studio version is only available on their 1999 Fan Club CD, along with a bunch of other unreleased songs, like "Speak to Me," one of my personal favorites. These are very hard to find, though, but well worth it if you do find them.

Found it on the DT forums.

Can't wait, personally.

Dream Theater are one of my favourite bands at the moment. I knew about John Petrucci before getting Images And Words, I knew how good he was.

I got Images and Words and I can't stop listening to it, it's great. I recently got Awake and that too is a great album.

I also got Live At Budokan DVD, awesome concert. Great musicianship going on there. Anyone else got that DVD?

Anyone know which album to get next?

vashts80 05-07-2005 08:30 AM

I always watch the first few songs, then after that I skip around on it and stuff.

vashts80 05-07-2005 11:48 AM

Where's the breakdown 1-0-0-0 riff? Is that before the

"Enter the door
Desperate
Fighting no more
Help me restore
To my sanity
At this temple of hope

I need to learn
Teach me how
Sorrow to burn
Help me return
To humanity
I'll be fearless and thorough
The enter this temple of hope"

part? Or where is it? Some kind of time code would be nice :x

MNbassist78 05-07-2005 12:31 PM

The breakdown riff starts around 5:50 :thumb:
