o try singing and playing wreath at the same time, now thats something i think even Mike has troubles doing
Which part are you talking about? I don't find it to be too difficult. |
pretty much whole song, u must be pretty good then.
|
Nah, it's really not that hard, just give it a go. Overall I'd have to say Still Life (as an album) is the trickiest to play and sing the parts at the same time, it's got all that unconventional riffing going on that's got vocals over it at the same time.
|
yeh, for sure that would be the most difficult
|
Lol ok, I thought that everyone kept ignoring me the million times I said it. "No worries."
To Cardboard Headgear-- If you believe that BWP is not a concept album...then what is your interpretation of the leper affinity or the other songs for that matter? I think its more of a thematic album. Feel free to email me about this too. funkydrummer_@hotmail.com peace, Chris |

^Go there, scroll down to Opeth and stream an hour long video. If you could rip it, I wouldnt shed a tear.My 56gay only gives me audio. |
hmm i think i've seen this one before
|
is that the one where they start with Godhead's lament?
|
Not sure if this has been mentioned before, as I haven't checked in on this thread in a while. But I was recently introduced to this band Farmakon, and they sound remarkably like Opeth. Not saying it's a bad thing, they actually pull it off quite well. There are a few samples on their site if you're curious:

yeah, i heard farmakon were similar to Opeth, never really checked anything out though, thanks for the link, i'll have a look later
|
Just took a look. A bit more power metal than Opeth (more vibrato on the clean vocals, way more technical guitar solos), but a bit less melodic and dense. Maybe that one clip that I could hear wasn't so representative.

you've earnt your stars ripper.

qouted for the simple fact that i agree, that album is the only album that puts me in such a hypnotic state, truly a masterpeice ++rep for a fellow still life lover :thumb: |
BWP is very atmospheric. It has such a dark and gloomy feel to it which makes it very enjoyable yet strange at the same time. Indeed the best Opeth album for me.
|
nice, BWP hasn't struck home as the best for me, Still life, then MAYH, both have the same effect on me
|
The first solo in The Lepper Affinity on BWP gets me everytime, I just love it. That's why I never bothered learning it, by the time I'm finished learning a song I know it so well taht it doesnt put me in the same mood anymore.
|
Exactly what I was thinking awhile ago. (rep ++)
Sometimes I dont want to learn how to play a song, cause after Ive played along, it doesn't have the same feeling it once possesed. With Opeth's complex music, I sometimes just leave it be. Let the masters do it! |

There is one done by Lindgren right after the acoustic part.At about 6 mins or so.

It's quite experimental but has some of the best riffs, very evil type song. |
haha i found a christian metal band that sounds very similiar to early opeth called sanctifica, their site has some samples http://www.sanctifica.com

Oh i see. I just always considered that an extension, or part of the interlude. |
That's one of the reasons Deliverance disappointed me: there was very little of the thickness of BWP and especially Still Life had, and little layering of guitar parts. That was a disappointment.
|
opeth_oasis, rep++ this band is like identical to orchid style opeth, they even look quite similiar. Anyone know anything on this brilliant bands new album? Like what month it will be released?
|
^^^ my friend knows i'll find out
|
Does anyone know if Mike intentionally made Bleak with the middle-eastern sounding riffs in it? It certainly has that vibe, but I fail to see how a sound that would be good in a desert fits in well on an album called Blackwater Park. Anyone else see what I mean? Don't get me wrong, Bleak is my favorite Opeth song, but it seems oddly placed on BWP.
|
Bump
Where did all the Opeth fans go? My above inquiry still stands. |
Blackwater Park is just the name of an old prog band that they decided to pay tribute to in the title, is my understanding. Middle Eastern scales are some of the most dissonant and unique, so it's natural for a melodic death-metal band such as Opeth to make use of them. They did the same thing on "Closure" on Damnation. The song itself has much denser, non-Middle-Eastern sections too, which are in keeping with the general layering and sound of the album (I'm talking about the acoustic and the breakdown sections in particular). I don't really think it sounds out of place at all.
