I'm groovin' to Gizmodgery by Self again. Seriously man, they're amazing, making such great music using only a bunch of toys and pasting the sounds together with some nice production skillz.

They're somewhere in between the funky white boy hip-hop-ness of Beck and poppy indie in general. Now go check out this album (don't worry about the other albums; Self without toys is not Self at the top of their game) before I start droppin plates on dat ass.

P.S. "Trunk Fulla Amps" has the best usage of rediculously large amounts of the word "fuck" ever, bar none, along with the best impressions of other singers' voices ever, plus the whole 'best usage of toys instead of instruments ever' thing inherent throughout the whole album.

True story
False story. You couldn't be wronger if you had an electrified wronging machine. That's how wrong you are.

Tangy zizzle 10-18-2004 11:25 PM

Missy Higgins makes me want to run away from myself.

Missy Misdemeaner Elliot > Elliot Smith

Don't be frontin' now.

Trail Of Dead - Source Tags & Codes: They have a very dark, enigmatic sound...which I really like. They also have interesting dynamics in their songs. "Monsoon" is my favorite, especially because of the cool climax.

Beck - Mutations: This is now my favorite Beck record, close behind Sea Change. It features Becks songwriting skills and goofy genre hopping into one. It lacks consistancy at times...which is it's only flaw. "Diamond Bollocks" is an incredible piece of music.

Elbow - Cast Of Thousands: A great layback record with very unique production. I like this band because they write very moving songs without getting over the top emotionally...and also have some very creative concepts. "Fugitive Motel" is a highlight.

The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin: I can't seem to get sick of this record.

DJ Shadow - Entroducing: see above.

Electric Six - Fire: Just a goofy record that's fun to listen to. This band seems to be awful on purpose....but the tunes they write are extremely catchy and fun.

Great choices Orb.

I'm getting very frustrated because I haven't had time to get Elliott Smith's From a Basement on a Hill. Bloody Uni... makes me mad.

Tomahawk 10-19-2004 11:10 AM

Right now I'm really digging the album "Sunrise Over Sea", by the John Butler Trio. Also I've been listening to Soundgarden and Jane's Addiction.

some may totally overlook the vines because of their popularity BUT winning days is an amazing album full of insane harmonies and psychedelic melodies. so before you brand them as just another garage band turned cool, listen to their stuff and prepare to be impressed.
also listen to:
the shins
the libertines
the unicorns
lips on a napkin
no no spots

Tomahawk 10-19-2004 11:05 PM

I don't overlook the Vines because of their popularity. I overlook them because of their SUCKularity!!! HA!! TAKE THAT THE VINES!!!
