Again, an extremely slippery counterexample.
Automative transporation is a necessary evil in this modern world while cigarettes...What are they?
Not necessary, but it's there, like I said it's part of the economy, and you can't take it out anymore. It's just luxury, for recreational purposes.
Oh, you mean like a concert venue? You could say, "Well, you choose to put yourself in that situation," but we shouldn't have to be plagued with harm when we're paying customers seeing a show.
Maybe not, but like you said, you don't have to go there. Smokers are people too. See, I absolutely hate it when someone wears too much perfume, it gives me a headache. But I don't tell them to get the **** out of my sight, I deal with it, or I go stand somewhere else. If you hate it that much, don't go somewhere where there might be people, people who might smoke. Seriously, you're not gonna drop dead from lung cancer if you stand in smoke for a while.
Yay for still more people who don't know **** about science!
Quiet, nerd. It's not gonna kill you and you're not gonna notice it. So don't be such a bitch about it. |
so is wearing a fucking mullet in public.
Hey now, lets not say anything we can't take back. My mullet was fucking sweet. |
My girlfriend posts on MX. She usually lurks though. She's posted in the Classic Rock thread a few times.
What's her username? I am intrigued by this bit of info. |
My girlfriend lurks here too, on a side note, mostly to spy on me.
Hey now, lets not say anything we can't take back. My mullet was ****ing sweet.
Come on, man, they're atrocious! |
hurray for smoking !!

Im working on opening a store for my Band's Merch on Cafepress.com  I just made a Mousepad with my band's logo on it :PiMp:
I didn't know you were that ultra fragile. The tiny little damage it does, heals, like a scratch. The bad elements in smoke are destroyed in your body, it's only when you repeatedly keep inhaling it that it will do damage.
Advantages? It's enjoyable for smokers, that's it. Like fastfood is enjoyable but doesn't do anyone much good.
So, here we go. Over 4000 additives are present in each cigarette. Most of these are natural products, but a few, namely Hydrogen Cyanide, Carbon Monoxide and Ammonia are very dangerous, even in small doses (>0.01mg). And sure, these bad elements are destroyed in the body, but in the same way that radioactive isotopes of Uranium, etc are destroyed in your body. Also, smoking doesn't just cause lung cancer. It cause haemorrhages in many vital organs, including the eyes. It causes extreme migraines in many people, due to the toxins released throughout the body. Of course, prolonged exposure to second-hand smoke is damaging in a visible way, but try running a marathon after you've inhaled even a few minutes of second-hand smoke. The destruction that the free radicals have done to the pockets of air in your lungs will be apparent.
Perhaps, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't crash. They should've stopped it when it started, it's too late now, it's part of the economy, and you'll have to live with it.
This is true, a large amount of revenue is generated by taxing the cigarette companies.
And besides, do you want everyone to live to grow 90 years old? There are too many people anyway, some people need to die every once in a while, and hey, might as well be those stupid smokers. Gives the doctors something to do, too.
This is just silly.
Okay, here's another example, why waste money on people who stuff their face all day and get heart problems and whatnot from being too damn fat. Like, let's say, 50% (made up number) of the country you live in? Why not ban unhealthy food? Sure, it's enjoyable, but so is smoking. Not every smoker dies. Only the people that go overboard and/or are unlucky, just like the fat people.
Turning the argument around doesn't make yours any less ungrounded.
I think a car produces juuust a bit more smoke than a person who smokes. That's up to other people to decide.
Cars are quite clean compared to cigarette smoke. Especially modern cars. And Carbon Monoxide kills by asphyxiation, not poisoning. It's a peaceful death.
What's her username? I am intrigued by this bit of info.
She spys on me mostly, and I shan't reveal her username. :p |

The economy wouldn't crash in America. You are overestimating the significance of tobacco on the overall economy of America and underestimating the significance of an unburdened healthcare system.
And besides, do you want everyone to live to grow 90 years old? There are too many people anyway, some people need to die every once in a while, and hey, might as well be those stupid smokers.
I don't want everyone to live to grow 90 years old, but I'd like to see more research and treatment done in the health problems listed below and many others.
Gives the doctors something to do, too.
This is a ludicrous example...Doctors and nurses are already overworked to begin with (all the patients suffering from smoking related problems are actually making that problem much worse). But if, somehow they weren't so busy, wouldn't you rather have them researching how to stop actually tragic disorders and ailments like genetic childhood disorders, cancer, neurological disabilities, etc and treating those who suffer from them?
Okay, here's another example, why waste money on people who stuff their face all day and get heart problems and whatnot from being too damn fat. Like, let's say, 50% (made up number) of the country you live in? Why not ban unhealthy food? Sure, it's enjoyable, but so is smoking. Not every smoker dies. Only the people that go overboard and/or are unlucky, just like the fat people.
I would support a ban on unhealthy food since it has also a burdening effect on healthcare (albeit, a much smaller one compared to tobacco), but it's a lot easier to educate than prohibit.
I think a car produces juuust a bit more smoke than a person who smokes. That's up to other people to decide.
*shrug* The healthcare system in America has never reported an significant issue with the automobile exhaust...Which is something impossible to statistically track and analyze anyway. |
American automobiles have become very highly regulated by environmental protection agencies, so the pollution produced from them has decreased drastically in recent years.

I don't have a problem with smokers, but I don't get the point.
|
Smoking makes you weak. It's also one of the most disgusting socially acceptable and voluntary endeavors done by a majority of people.
In other news, I just recorded a cover of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" for the cover comp. Everyone listen and tell me that I'm worse than Hendrix! :) |
The interesting thing is that smoking has thankfully lost a lot of ground and popularity with the our generation :-)
|
I didn't know I was in health class.
I think people can smoke if they want to smoke, in general. Obviously there is grey area here and I don't want to get into that, but I feel smokers have the right to smoke as long as there is no direct conflict. And bringing up how bad smoking is for you doesn't usually have an affect on smokers. |
Hehe, that's true. I watched a few Cary Grant movies a night ago, and everyone smokes or is about to smoke in every scene. :p

where is the rock-'n-roll spirit? drinking, smoking, being an asshole,...
give it a try, you'll love it |
The interesting thing is that smoking has thankfully lost a lot of ground and popularity with the our generation :-)
Obviously, because of all the exposure we receive of the cons. Back in the '50s, they weren't as aware, so it was more common. |

I don't smoke. I'm listening to your cover right now.
I had no school today, but I just woke up. It's 6PM. I love wasting my day by sleeping. |

Well I'll sacrifice my finances so people can smoke if they want to. |

How? Excuse me that I haven't taken a course in Economics in my life, I'm just a freshman in high school. |
Well I'll sacrifice my finances so people can smoke if they want to.
Will you also sacrifice everything else that the government furnishes you with? Because that is what happens :-)
How? Excuse me that I haven't taken a course in Economics in my life, I'm just a freshman in high school.
Read above...If it's not making sense, I'll explain more. |
Will you also sacrifice everything else that the government furnishes you with? Because that is what happens :-)
Yea, because smoking is the root to all evil, so I'll sacrifice that too.
You can sacrifice your finances so I can buy new musical equipment if you like.
I would only sacrifice my finances for your right to play music, not for you to actually buy musical equipment. |

Please. Is it with taxes or benefits or healthcare or what? |
Please.
Is it with taxes or benefits or healthcare or what?
Well, I'm not sure where you live but this example applies primarily to America. However, I'm sure it's flexibile enough to be applied elsewhere. The various sorts of governments in America (federal, state, and local) are all charged with the task of taking care of its citizens and providing them with the services that one comes to expect the government to provide us. These services include police, firemen, education, transportation, military, etc. One of the utmost important services offered is healthcare. And for good reason...Without a good healthcare system, you'll soon find your nation to be an empty one. While much of the actual healthcare in America is owned privately, most (read: nearly all) Americans cannot afford to pay the very high fees for by themselves. This is what insurance and healthcare plans are for...To keep the hospitals/doctors/nurses paid and running well when the patients can't pay. There are certain healthcare plans that are funded by the government (these plans get some of the biggest chunks of the budget each year) and if the government needs to put more and more money into them, all other services will indirectly or directly suffer as a result. Even those with private insurance companies will not be left unaffected. Their premiums will also go up... ...Does that make more sense? |

Teacher: You should wait until you are married before having sex Person: What if I want to have sex before I'm married? Teacher: Then you will die  * *actual quote
We had the most hilarious video for our Sex Ed class. It was a bunch of Aussie TV talents, before they were famous. Of course, mullets abounded, as it was made in '87. Best quote was when a bloke was describing when he lost his virginity. "I'd had fantasies before, of course, usually involving Kylie Minogue and about a gallon of motor oil, but this was way different. It was sticky, and not in a good way." It was also great because he lost in on the Photocopier machine, so his partner got the sack for distributing lewd images. And the narrator, Roy Slaven, also went up to many a rockin' car, boat, bed, etc, and asked if they were using protection. Really funny. Oh, and we didn't have any Reagan style messages in it, so I guess it was a lot more fun than an American equivalent. Come to think of it, it was probably one of the best videos ever. :p
I did see it, it was quite funny. :) I had never heard it before, so I can be potentially persuaded to believe that you actually made it up, provided you convince me of this. <_<
Oh ahem yes, I did quite. It was all me. :conspiracy: |
