I don't listen to Glassjaw.

I'm just going to keep talking about The Melvins because that show was absolutely incredible the other night. I'm so glad it was able to live up to 10 years of expectation.
Glad to hear it was an amazing experience, Zack. Whenever a band you dig lives up to/ exceeds expectations and fulfills what your dreams of seeing them were that just makes the love for the band super duper intense.
oh come on, that's as weak as when people say 'people you listen to liked the beatles, so that means you HAVE to like them too'.

you can do better than that :p
wait, wait wait. This means I don't have to like a certain band just because?

Yeah man, it was really amazing.

And I get to see Swans in a month. I've just recently been getting into them, but they're fantastic. I'm sure it'll be a mind-blowing show, too.

Smashing Pumpkins played a free show last night. Our local radio station paid to have an exclusive show and gave out tickets for various reasons on the radio. Problem is, it's impossible to get a call through on that damn station and there is no way to buy them. I'm so sad I couldn't go.

Convectuoso 09-05-2010 01:54 AM

Holy fuck a whole day without a single post.

Bass forum you disappoint me.

So my band more or less broke up last week (half the band moved away, the drummer is out of town) and we were scheduled to play a show tonight. not a big deal kinda show, it's a free show, but they save the full bands for the last slot. I tried to get anybody I knew to play and back me up but nobody could, and I told the promoter this via email. I also mentioned I would still play the show, like it must go on kinda deal. I wasn't backing out basically. He just replied and the vibe I get from his email is that he's pretty fucking pissed. What do I do to diffuse the situation?

How far in advance did you know that the rest of the band wasn't going to be there? THAT'S when you should contact the promoter.

There's nothing you can do. You're canceling last minute. All you can do is sincerely apologize and expect that you wont be working with that promoter again in the future.

I'm not cancelling - I fully intend to play the show by myself. I found out at the beginning of last week but my bassist (who would've switched to drums) was trying to get his registration pushed forward from last Sunday - couldn't do it. All the while I was trying to get anyone and everyone else I knew on board to play and nobody could do it. But again I figured it wouldn't be such a big deal - it was a free show, with no cover or anything. So I figured I could do an acoustic set anyway no problem.

Either way, I just got the phone call - I've been pulled from the bill. The guy seemed pretty good-natured about the whole thing, but I'm still sure he was pretty choked about the whole thing.

Spaceman Spiff 09-07-2010 02:21 PM

That sucks, man.

On the bright side, EADG got my band a show for this Sunday. It's going to be pretty awesome.

I... I know that doesn't really do anything for you...

FlamingCouch 09-07-2010 03:33 PM

Hey, no worries. The fact that you've got a show is pretty bad-ass.

My dad was up for the weekend and we've pretty much figured out a plan of awesome. I go work doing pipeline construction for the winter, come out of the bush with thousands of dollars and pay off all my debts, then go home for the summer for my sister's wedding and all that jazz and afterwards take off on a cross-country musical journey. He pretty much laid out the groundwork of the plan and it sounds like a super bad-ass idea. I've basically got a year to set everything up.

But yeah, I'm glad you'll be tearing it up this Sunday. Better one of us than none of us! :thumb:

Spaceman Spiff 09-07-2010 03:45 PM

That sounds like a pretty sweet plan. Where's your journey going to take you?

FlamingCouch 09-07-2010 04:05 PM

Well I mean it's still a year away, so it's baby steps right now. But basically the idea he gave me was to go all across Canada over an indefinite period of time. Go back to North Bay for the summer, because my sister's getting married (which I was going to do in the first place) but afterwards, while I'm still there, plan to tour all the way back East 'til I end up in Newfoundland or Nova Scotia or something like that. Get a job bartending or doing something nice and simple and just play music at night or whatever, and record and all that jazz. Then after awhile take off and head to the next spot, do the same thing. He told me more or less that if I don't stay tethered to one place for too long, I won't get locked into the whole 'daily grind' of things, y'know?

But either way, we'll see what happens. Life may take me somewhere else entirely. But I do know I'll most likely be heading into the woods this winter and coming out debt-free.

Spaceman Spiff 09-07-2010 04:29 PM

That's pretty badass.

I found the daily grind to be entirely tolerable when I had a job I liked. It's when you're doing something that you get no joy out of that it becomes a chore.

I mean, I guess I don't have it too bad right now, but I can't stand the hours that I work. Working 4PM to midnight is something I really don't like. I'd rather be free in the evenings when my friends are. Especially since pretty much my only friends are the other people in my band, we could get so much more done if I had a better schedule.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I feel the same way about tolerable jobs - I worked at a pottery shop back in Mattawa and absolutely loved it - fantastic job, great people. Everything was right up my alley save for the wage - eight dollars an hour just couldn't make ends meet. Between gas driving back and forth to the shop, rent et al, I had to come back out here.

But yeah, not matching your friends' hours gets pretty brutal after awhile for sure.

It wouldn't have hurt to provide a replacement band.

Aerodyne 09-07-2010 10:56 PM

I disappeared for a few years to get a degree. What'd I miss?

Convectuoso 09-08-2010 02:51 AM

A tumbling employment rate and the deterioration of mankind itself.

Not much.

gaslight 09-08-2010 05:01 AM

What degree?

funkyhoney 09-08-2010 05:32 AM

I'm feeling very despondent at the moment and I'm relying on you guys (strangers, basically) to make me feel better. Go!
