I like the diversity of Mikael's voice, he has some of the best death metal vocals I've heard and his clean voice is really amazing, like in Hours of Wealth.
|
The bassist on Morningrise was terrible. He did not know his place in the music, and the way his parts stuck out was distracting, contrary to a lot of peoples' belief that if you can hear a bass part in a metal song it must be great.

I agree, it was distracting. |
Yeah, I agree too. At times it was.
|
There's a certain niche that bass fits into in music. The great thing about the current bassist is that he can always find that niche perfectly and use it to his advantage. The old one could not.
Oh, and those god-awful effects he would use sometimes. |

Johans styling was pretty odd. But I like some of it.
|
If you had your way, there wouldn't be any bass player :p.
I love Johan and Martin and each complemented the albums they were on perfectly. I do wish Martin was higher in the mix though. |
I have been listening to Opeth for a while now but dont have any albums from them I was thinking about Ghost Reveries but can anyone suggest what I should get first?
|
Nah, that was a weak effort from the band. Get Blackwater Park or Still Life first.

Really? I thought Ghost Reveries wasn't bad at all. It has some great songs on it. |
Yeah, it's got a few good tunes. But as a whole, fails compared to the likes of the albums I mentioned before. IMO, anyway.
|
Ok, thanks
|
Just to let you all know, i wasn't bashing their current bassist. He is very skilled, i just think their old bassist was really great. But yea, the older bassists style probably wouldn't mesh good with their more recent styles. Their first bassist had some cool funky lines.

Oh, and those god-awful effects he would use sometimes.
Like I said on the last page, Johan filled in the void left by the absense of chordal-based guitars on Orchid/Morningrise. He wouldn't fit in if he was on MAYH or any of the albums after that, because they moved away from the harmony guitars and into more chordal-based stuff. |
I really don't like their old drummer. Anders Whatshisface.
|
The two Martins completely own the old guys. The drum tone on Ghost Reveries is one of the best I've ever heard.
|
I wouldn't know. I haven't listened to "that album" in months.
|
Ghost Of Perdition and Isolation years are easily my two favourites on the album. But definitely get Blackwater Park or Still Life first.
|

:O The bass at the start of Black Rose Immortal has some of the coolest scarist bass tone ever. |

As if, it's one of their best albums. Silly Ghost Reveries haters. :p I would recommend Still Life and Blackwater Park for definitive Opeth albums though, and Damnation if you're looking for something mellow. If you're a death metal guy, My Arms, Your Hearse Might be your best bet. And if you're a Gothenburg lover go for Morningrise. |
Dude stop hating on Johan. Sure he used some annoying phasers now and then but To Bid You Farewell by itself makes up for anything bad he might have done.
|
what do you guys think to the ghost reveries album?
|
what do you guys think to the ghost reveries album?
Some good songs, some bad ones. |
I like it alot. But I like all their albums. Personally I would have liked a long ballad track instead of just a few shortish mellow songs. Something along the lines of Face Of Melinda/TBYF.
As far as getting into Opeth in concerned choose either Still Life or Blackwater Park, it's a more true reflection of Opeth... |
which ones are good/bad
|

Exactly. :thumb: |
to bid you farewell is awesome :)

I like the first three a lot, then it falls apart, then Isolation Years was kinda cool. The Grand Conjuration is better live. |
which ones are good/bad
The only ones I think worth Downloading if that is infact what you're doing are... Ghost Of Perdition The Baying of The Hounds The Grand Conjuration Isolation Years. Possibly Hours Of Wealth. |
