Because you need to let the notes ring.

Crysiss 04-07-2006 03:24 PM
I think its so the notes could ring into each other:)
So its like I said up here. I see.

Deth 04-07-2006 08:01 PM

Crazy guitar players and their chords. You're so silly.

UpperDecker 04-07-2006 08:02 PM

I just came to the conclusion that My Arms, Your Hearse is infact Opeth's heaviest and best album. Here's why. All the songs are amazingly thought out and flow together, the concept is great and its cool that the last word of each song is the first of the next, the growls are the best out of all their releases(imo), this cd contains the best riffs Opeth have ever made. I'll end my ranting now. This cd just blows me away. Oh and i forgot, very vivid and thought provoking lyrics.

It's a shame the booklet sucks so much for MAYH. If the presentation of it had the shine of Still Life, it would be the perfect compliment to the story. I would have love to have seen more artwork and the lyrics presented better.

Doesn't it say in the booklet that Michael pretty much made the album himself. If thats true he truly is a genius because all of the instruments are top noch.

I've just recently been getting into Opeth, over the past month or so. I've avoided them before because I thought they were some generic death metal band. Wow I was wrong, they are amazing. They write the best ballads I have ever heard from any band.

Definitely, atleast from all the bands i've heard. If you haven't yet, check out A Fair Judgement, To Bid You Farewell, and Still Day Beneath The Sun. All of them are really amazing.

Yeah, I've heard them all. To Bid You Farewell was actually the song that got me into them. It's a really good song. I really like In My Time Of Need, The Drapery Falls, Windowpane. Ghost of Perdition is a good song too.

Stop sucking up :p joking

UpperDecker 04-08-2006 02:40 PM

Opeth need to track down their old bass player and kick out the other dude. Now the current guy isn't bad but the old bass player was soo much better.

JamJar 04-08-2006 03:03 PM

IMO the old bass parts (quite obviously refering to Morningrise) were sometimes way too hectic, and sometimes the song just didn't need that.

444 posts... I'm 2/3 of the way to the devil mwahahaha!

Darkness 04-08-2006 03:30 PM

I agree, some of the bass on Morningrise can be annoying. Mendez is much more enjoyable.

Shadius 04-08-2006 03:40 PM
Opeth need to track down their old bass player and kick out the other dude. Now the current guy isn't bad but the old bass player was soo much better.
Not really, he just played higher up a lot, and was more about improvising. Dosn't mean he was better.

Mendez can play his parts when they do the Orchid/Morningrise songs, but the parts he writes are more bassy, which is, IMO (and in the opinion of Opeth) what the band needs.

Stoo 04-08-2006 03:52 PM

Wait... Mike done the Morningrise bass?

Darkness 04-08-2006 03:54 PM

No...?

Stoo 04-08-2006 03:59 PM

What the fudge. I don't know what I'm thinkin of but I'm sure I head sumwhere that he did the bass on an album because at the time of the recording Opeth did not have a bassist therefore Mikael did it?

Darkness 04-08-2006 04:02 PM

He did, on My Arms, Your Hearse.

Stoo 04-08-2006 04:03 PM

Ahh okay. I was thinking of that. For ages I thought it was Morningrise. Oh well.

RustedPieces 04-08-2006 04:16 PM

I think the bass on To Bid You Farewell is amazing, not sure of the others though.

vashts80 04-08-2006 04:17 PM
Opeth need to track down their old bass player and kick out the other dude. Now the current guy isn't bad but the old bass player was soo much better.
The Orchid/Morningrise songs were more riff-based (because they were playing that Gothenburg riff style then), and therefore they needed a lead bass to fill the void left by the absense of chords. Now that they play more chordal-based stuff (since MAYH), a lead bassist wouldn't work.

Mike also recorded the bass on MAYH, because I believe that they didn't have time to teach Mendez all of the basslines, so Mike just recorded it himself.

I completely agree. The bass on TBYF is amazing fun to play.

I can't play the "double-stop" part at like 5:15 right. It's hard.

Shadius 04-08-2006 04:33 PM

Yeah, the bass in TBYF is great stuff, but thats easily my favourite song on that album anyway, overall.
