Sunny Day Real Estate - How It Feels To Be Something On

Holy hell this album is awesome.
I like that loads more than Diary.

Dino Jr. - Bug
Chin Up Chin Up - We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers

Chin Up Chin Up's vocalist tries to be Scott McCloud from Girls Against Boys, and it works out more often than not.

JonM 07-31-2006 09:14 AM

I'm digging Deerhoof's Holdy Paws intensely. I love the production on the vocals. They treat that crazy woman's voice exactly the way they should. They double the tracks, so the voices are always slightly out of tune, which makes her sound more insane, and then they turn up the gain just enough so that it makes absolutely no difference what the lyrics are, which is good, because they're ridiculous. The band just ROCKS.

ATM 07-31-2006 09:21 AM

Hm I'll have to keep an eye out for that one. That sounds good.

My diggage:

People Under the Stairs - The Next Step
Gym Class Heros - For the Kids
Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Totally Radd - Shark Attack Day Camp
V/A - Radiodread
Sleep - Dopesmoker

Daniel! 07-31-2006 12:16 PM
That's their first album right? I hear it's crazy noisy stuff, I could never find that one on soulseek though. The Cows reign supreme.
Yep. I found it on soulseek a few days ago, only one guy had it. I'm liking it more than Cunning Stunts[/I, which is the only other one I have. If you want it my soulseek name is DanielN.

The Great Decay 07-31-2006 05:12 PM

Last couple of days:

Ampere – All Our Tomorrows End Today
Leonard Cohen – Songs of Love and Hate
Bob Dylan – Blood on the Tracks
Elliott Smith – Elliott Smith
Elliott Smith – Figure 8
Elliott Smith – Roman Candle
The Decemberists – 5 Songs
Sole – Bottle of Humans

ATM 07-31-2006 05:12 PM

Does Battle of Humans have Year of the Sex Symbol on it?

The Great Decay 07-31-2006 05:14 PM

Yep.

It's "Bottle of Humans", I made a typo.

sr800bkBassist 07-31-2006 05:16 PM

i used to not like Defiance, Ohio's new CD (The Great Depression) very much.
but now i'm really enjoying it. anybody else dig it?

ATM 07-31-2006 05:17 PM
Yep.

It's "Bottle of Humans", I made a typo.
Oh ok, cool. I really love that song.

I can't stop listening to Sunny Day Real Estate.

The Great Decay 07-31-2006 05:18 PM

I just downloaded LP2 recently, but I haven't listened to it yet. I already love Diary and How it Feels..

The Great Decay 07-31-2006 05:26 PM

I'm going to give a listen as soon as this Sole album is done.

sr800bkBassist 07-31-2006 06:27 PM
LP2 is sometimes even better than Diary. It's so formless and awesome. The songs aren't really structured, it's just a big blob of different melodies.

Endserenading to Diary's Power of Failing, if you will.
the only song off LP2 i've heard is Rodeo Jones, and i love it. are the other songs as good as that?

el doctor 07-31-2006 06:40 PM

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

I was at summer program at Brown for a week and I was listening to this in the library. I put the finishing touches on my final assignment and just as I walked out the doors and into the open air and sunlight, the heavy part of "Soma" kicked in. Pure awesomeness.

Muse - Black Holes and Revelations

I'm seeing them Thursday. I'm pretty mixed on the album, although "Knights of Cydonia" is a great song (Ennio Morricone meets Rush?).

Lou Reed - Transformer

I had this with me today in the car, during lunch, and outside by the pool. It's just that good.

The Format - Dog Problems

This one's been in constant rotation for a few weeks now. It could easily become my favorite of the year thanks to tracks like "Time Bomb" and "Dog Problems".

Nice musical week. Now this week I can invest all my time into the amazing things I bought at the festival.

asymm 07-31-2006 07:20 PM

It was a nice haul, for sure. The best part was when I had time to browse through the record crates. Those were the best deals.

CDs
Codeine - Barely Real EP
The National - The National
The Sea and Cake - Oui
Various Artists - Ghostly International - Idol Tryouts Two

Vinyl
New Order - Substance (2xLP $10)
Magazine - The Correct Use of Soap (LP $5)
Talk Talk - It's My Life (12" $4)
The National - Cherry Tree (10" Red Vinyl $10)
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hyaena (LP $5)
Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring (LP $3)

I would've liked to pick up a few shirts, but I couldn't buy a $15 shirt when I could pick up three full length albums for the same price. Just couldn't pass up the records.

mr_jackalope 07-31-2006 07:58 PM

Nice on all the National asymm. Definitely one of my favorite bands, though their s/t is a little weak.

Damn, you're in for a treat. 7 is unbelievable. I waited so long for it to be put out in the NTSC version instead of the original PAL. One of the best music DVDs I've seen.

Word, he played a show at the music store I work at. It was really funny, all the bass players were knocking on the door before we even opened. And every single one of them had their bass with them

Anyway, I've listened to How It Feels To Be Something On by Sunny Day Real Estate at least 5 times in the past 2 days.

JonM 08-01-2006 12:42 PM

I actually decided that I don't really like Marcus Miller's music. I'm impressed enough by his playing to keep listening to it, but I don't think it's good music, per se. Amazing, but not enjoyable.

Zappa 08-01-2006 12:55 PM

he said "Hi, I played with Miles Davis."

JonM 08-01-2006 02:47 PM

Oh, okay. I understand now.

Zappa 08-01-2006 02:54 PM

We are playing $25,000 Pyramid, and the category was "things Marcus Miller might say." You lose.

JonM 08-01-2006 02:57 PM
We are playing $25,000 Pyramid, and the category was "things Marcus Miller might say." You lose.
Oh. Good thing I knew that beforehand.

Everything I heard of Marcus with Miles SUCKED. I'm beginning to agree with you on the lead bassist thing.
ok even better diggage

The National - Alligator

This album is so good. I really wish they could have pulled it off live, but they didn't do it for me. Maybe it was the festival setting.

edit: "Lit Up" and "All the Wine" are like the two best songs of 2005.
Best album of 2005 what? And probably 2004 too. And you've really gotta hear the b-sides, they're as good as anything on the album.

(It's my natural reaction to respond as quickly as I can to any post mentioning The National in any way.)

Is the non-faded copy of YLT's new one available yet? I'm dying to hear that in full, I really like the messed up copy.
