That's what I said...
I know, I was referencing a post that was made after your comment. But of course I do agree with you. Also, Tool is a very spiritual, open-minded band, but I thought it was clearly obvious that they're not too thrilled with Christianity. |
He's been known to reference Christianity, probably because they tend to be the first example of organized religion that pops to mind.
Eulogy, for example, is either a clear reference to or blatent mockery of the Christion religion. Or both. |
Who knows if he actually writes his own stuff? He's got alot of potential that won't ever be appreciated by people like us.
Who knows if he actually writes his own stuff? He's got alot of potential that won't ever be appreciated by people like us.
I disagree. If you were to rephrase that and say that he's got a lot of potential but his producers, songwriters, record company, and publicists won't let him do something amazing with his voice (such as, say, Jeff Buckley), then I might agree. I like to think we're a fairly open-minded bunch of people. |
..So there you go... there are some Christianity references, their not always positive, but their there.
|
No I mean the music he puts his voice on is like scratching nails on a chalkboard to us.
|
Yeah, agreed. I honestly don't think he has that good of a voice either. Rather generic.
|
..So there you go... there are some Christianity references, their not always positive, but their there.
Well, since you did mention The Grudge, I will disagree on this. Every reference to Saturn, the one, the ten, etc..are basically telling me that Maynard is a Pagan. I mean, every once of the references has popped up in some Pagan religion over time. Granted, most religious concepts are ripped off of previous religions(Roman, in this case) I'm guessing Maynard doesn't really beleive in Roman mythology. I will say that Schism is clearly about Christianity, although the song shows no objectivity to it whatsoever. |
I simply said that the Grudge has ideas of forgiveness in it, I agree with the Pagan stuff... to an extent.
|
I've always thought of the members of Tool as very free thinking. No beliefs really, and I quote "beliefs are dangerous".
Drawing an influence from a religion to put into music is far from drawing a faith from a religion. I'm sure Tool has used many religions for influences. |
Sup thread I'm back.
I got AABC in my As levels..w00t...(that means i will be predicted straight A's for my uni application...:p) American radio plays alot of tool...which i found kinda strange as the heaviest thing on english radio is the libertines and the likes :( They also seem to have an obsession with slipknot and Alice In Chains, it is impossible to flick the radio on for more that half an hour without hearing them. Well I make it sound like all radio is like this but i was only listening to the first rock station i found. Meh. I can't be bothered in catching up with all the topics mentioned in the thread since i left, mainly because Ben has already informed me there has been no news. GG Jake on overtaking my postcount while i was on hols :( |
sup fellas
 |
I will say that Schism is clearly about Christianity, although the song shows no objectivity to it whatsoever.
I would not say clearly. Obviously, we can have our own views of lyrics, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. However, to me, the lyrics on the surface are possibly about The Great Schism, but I believe it to be an analogy (am I using the right word there?) for a failed relationship. That way, you could look at it with either view and you'd think you're correct. However, why would there be a song on the album about Christianity? I guess this also depends on your views of the other songs too. You could say they are very spiritual lyrics on the album, or you could have a more "real" interpretation of them. For example, I've heard someone's view of The Patient is that it is about "living your life to the fullest, but to also be patient about the afterlife." What I get from the song is more general. I feel the song is just about having hope and optimism about "something." The lyrics don't really seem to mention anything specifically, it could be about a lot of things. You know what I'm saying? |

There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away. i think argueing about what the lyrics mean is completely pointless. What someone gets out of a peice of art is totally different than the person who read/looks at it next.
|
And that's exactly why I've never discussed the meaning of songs on here, about any band. Its like arguing over a favorite color.
|
In an interview with maynard and billy maynard told the interviewer that "i'm not necissaraly a christian, persay, but i think all those spiritual leaders had their point" so basically maynard isn't a christian but he lives by the words of jesus, buddah, allah, etc. he says he's a spiritual guy and he studies into religion and mythology so take whatever opinion from that that you want.

thanks you :D someone posted their "idea" of what stinkfist was. They said it was anal fisting  i told them they should check out the lyrics again :thumb: they were all upset and wanted to argue over it, and I explained how pointless that was. |

It is clear that the song, taken literally is about anal fisting. |

(I know the pieces fit. I know the pieces fiiit! how has this got to do with christianity
1. The word Schism came around during "The Great Schism," which was the separation between the Catholic and Protestant churches(both are the main branches of Christianity, I may add) "I know the peices fit, cause I watched them fall away" is a reference to a time when the two churches had no problem coexisting in the same world. I'll try and explain it more thouroughly if you're not seeing it, but those are the two most obvious reasons. |
O SH!T..
this is what i was TRYING to get away from.... SOOOOOoooooo we have any guitarists in here? |

im posting a metroid recording on monday. Its the norfair dungeon music, sped up, and added some nice metal flair

The beauty of Tool's lyrics (and their complexity) is that they write seemingly deep vague lyrics which adds a certain level of mystery this in turn has you fanboys gabbing away in order to disect every single word Maynard says. Possibly the most clever and well thought out gimmick. No doubt Tool are a lot more than they seem. A clever bunch.
Tool doesnt have a particular meaning for every single song, their message is more universal. Tool is about getting you to think about things in your daily life. Tool's main message is that of personal independance, they urge you to live a self-sufficient life in which you make your choices. This especially apparent whenever Maynard does an interview, his opinions on today's world are clear. And I agree with him, the western hemisphere has become one big walmart. |
O SH!T..

Nobuo>>- I'm not that great, but thanks. :p SugarCoatedSour- Socialism is overrated.
I know...everything has its faults. But I'd prefer true freedom rather than what their giving you now. Seeing as how I live in Canada I've been exposed to much of the mass media mindf^!K but none of the moral bombardment. So I've actually gained an eye for the BullSh@t and can easily laugh at it. I truly don't know what kind of media American's have because I havent lived there for an extended period of time, but from what I can sense through communication you guys are stuck in pretty deep. The important thing is not to take a side or rebel but instead educate yourself, you have to become wise to their motives. Slowly the government has been taking away your independance...making things easier through technology and other ****, it just complicates your life. Sorry I hate to preach but neck deep in bu!lsh!t every time i turn on the tv. |
Yeah, some of the tracks aren't completed, but they all have guitars. Download Lateralus 2, as it has everything minus bass.
I saw that you lived in Lancaster County. I used to live there, about 10 or so years ago. Do you happen to know a girl named Stephanie? I don't know her last name, but she has a younger brother named Derrick. I think they're something like 15 and 17ish? |
