France is cooler.

Actually Germany is one of the countries I plan on visiting when I'm 18. I just need to go back to German classes for a while.

NJMetalMeister 06-29-2005 03:00 AM

Well it depends on where you go in germany. If you go to major cities youll get by just fine with english. If you go into smaller villiages, especially in eastern germany, forget it. Youll be lucky if you even find someone who isnt speaking a really slanged up version of german ;)

vocman 06-29-2005 03:03 AM

you should come to belgium, we have people who speak french, people who speak german and people who speak dutch. we've got it all

NJMetalMeister 06-29-2005 03:04 AM

actually i was told, probably by Jelle that the language isnt actually dutch, but flemmish, which is just essentially another dialect of the language, but hey whatever now im just nitpicking.

Bazarov 06-29-2005 03:06 AM

Is/was English a recuired class in any of your guys' schools?

NJMetalMeister 06-29-2005 03:09 AM

beats me, im not actually a german, i am an american. From what i understand it is required to take a foreign language here in germany starting at a rather young age, and MOST germans take english, but a few opt for french instead.

The thing is, the german youth really really wanna be like americans, it is kinda crazy, hence why so many take english. Like if you took a 14 year old american girl and a 14 year old german girl and stood them next to each other, they would look the same. Same clothes, hairstyle and color, etc... And on trains and stuff i always hear younger kids listening to like 50 cent and saying stuff like "i cant wait to learn more english so i can understand what hes saying" and stuff like that.

crazy germans

vocman 06-29-2005 03:09 AM

Yes, it's flemmish, but flemmish is not a real language you see, it is the name of the dialect;you were told right, but the official one is dutch. Jelle is a classmate of mine, and he likes to nitpick, believe me :):)

and yes, in highschool I had three hours of english a week (and now I'm studying it @ university)

Bazarov 06-29-2005 03:13 AM

I see.

Three hours seems king of intense. I wish schools here, or atleast in San Diego were more diverse the majoirty only teach French or Spanish as a foriegn language.

Shred Danson 06-29-2005 03:15 AM

You crazy foreign people.

vocman 06-29-2005 03:16 AM

yeah, but I did languages in highschool . I think the other courses only had 2 hours of english...
My course:
3h english
4h french
4h dutch
3h spanish
4h Latin
and the rest was filled with stuff like 1h geography, 2h mathematics, etc

NJMetalMeister 06-29-2005 03:17 AM

3 hours per week isnt much, at my university back in the states when you take a language its 4 hours a week, and in high school we had 50 minutes a day 5 days a week.

Difference was, as opposed to Europe where you have a ton of languages and can actually hear and use the one youre learning on occasion, in the US, you will never use the language outside of the classroom, at least not in the state of NJ, and especially with a language like German.

Stoic 06-29-2005 03:21 AM

English is required class here (greece) but our educational system is fucked up so everyone takes extra lessons in special private foreign language institutes or hires a teacher at home. I started taking lessons when I was 8 years old and stopped when I was 14 after taking the Cambridge Proficiency Certificate in English. My pronunciation rules too

vocman 06-29-2005 03:22 AM

good for you :)

Eh even if your pronunciation sucked i would be able to understand you because of my greek grandfather:

1) he had an extremely thick greek accent
2) he had been smoking for at least 60 years, so had a huge cough and it made his voice much more grainy
3) he mumbled when he talked

if you can understand that, then no accent is too thick or too hard to understand!

So, languages.

I used to be good at French (at the beginning of school, I mean; for a couple of years it was one of my best subjects, let alone my best language), but then I realised that whenever I tried counting in French, around cinq I would switch into German without realising it. So from them on I went with German.

Interesting, eh.

that's really strange.

I just passed spanish 2 which is how far up you are required to go around here. So i really don't plan on moving on with foreign languages, i suck at them.

-------------------------------------

I just saw an advert for the broadcast of Live8, when they were showing the acts that were performing. Everyone got mentioned, that is, except Pink Floyd. Even KingMoron Bono and U2 got mentioned, but not a single sign that Pink Floyd were reuniting! What. The. Hell...

Also, my favourite skit show just had two of the best skits I've seen in a long time. One was a send up of the amazing race, and they really took the piss out of the Yanks. It was hilarious. They also did a skit set in the wild west, with a cowboy trying to track down a Mexican bandit, called Hernandes Rico Fajiita Burrito Romero Sancho Taco Luis Tortilla Savona.

The last thing I have to say, I served the coolest customer today. 6'4" at least, long hair, beard, black bandanna, leather jacket and gloves, and some badarse sunnies. I swear the guy was Heavy Metal incarnate. I asked him if he liked Motorhead, and he said, "Awesome band, but I like Judas Priest better, bloke". \m/
