Dude, we both live in The Moor! :D
Opeth >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>x10 to Metallica. And no, lots of people hate Opeth. I'm starting to see a trend by the more "elite" metal heads, that goes something like this "Opeth sucks! there are better bands!". It's really quite stupid, as I believe they just don't understand Opeth, or are just trying to be unique. I think it's more the later.
Nice to see that we have another Moor resident. Let's do lunch sometime.:thumb: Metal elitists really need to shut up, just because a band is gaining popularity doesn't mean that they automatically suck. |
Yeah, I know you hate them, but I'm too much of a fanboy to not say something like that.
You still have to understand how important Metallica was for the metal world, and I guess I'm trying to give the same compliments to Opeth.
I was kidding. :p Where did you get the idea that I hate them? I'm no St. Anger fan, but I love Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. I don't like them near as much as I did before I got into more extreme stuff though. |
AJFA is where its at. :D

I was just looking at your sputnik ratings of Metallica and I just got the vibe that you didn't think much of them. Never mind then. Yeah, I'm strictly a pre-black album Metallica fan. They, along with Slipknot (sadly), were the reasons that I got into metal so I can't stop liking them. Anyways, Opeth still dominates the metal world these days and the only band that can really contest with them would be Children of Bodom.:) ...and Arsis can come too. |
AJFA is where its at. :D
awsome rythm tone :) Opeth Raleted: I'm at the verse riff of The Moor. This is pretty hard. I've been practicing it a lot, so its turning out good so far. |

I agree.. either they already have a preconcieved notion about what kind of music Opeth is (artsy, pseudo-intellectual drivel), or they're just too stubborn and impatient to give them a decent listen. |
Opeth riffs have always been difficult for me to do. They're just plain different from normal metal riffs and I've yet to get used to their style of playing.
|
I remember going through a "Metallica is not tr00" phase where I gave all of the albums 2.5's or below, but pay no attention to that. Their old stuff is great.
Metallica and Slipknot got me into metal too, so they have a special place in my heart, even if I don't actually listen to them anymore. I think Opeth has cracked my coveted top 5 all-time favorite bands. |

Ben, what are the other 4 ?
|
Oh, Opeth is already sitting strong at #4 on my favorite bands list...and that's quite a feat.
|
They're still my #1 favourite band.
|
Ben, what are the other 4 ?
Children of Bodom, Arsis, Cradle of Filth, and Shadows Fall. |
All of those are excellent picks, especially Bodom and Arsis. Cradle of Filth is still in my top 20 probably, but they sit on the lower part.
...but what about Dissection? :thumb: |
Children of Bodom, Arsis, Cradle of Filth, and Shadows Fall.
Oh ok. The only band in those 4 I've heard stuff from is Bodom and a song I dont remember from Shadows Fall. Opeth are in my top 5. |
Just because Shadows Fall has been mentioned, I have to say this: their cover of "Welcome to the Machine" owns.
|

Plus Maha Kali really blows.
That's pretty true, their first two albums are the only ones that are really worth checking out. But when they hit, they hit really really really damn hard. I mean...Storm of the Light's Bane just happens to be the best black metal album ever. |
Dissection is where it's at. I like the instrumentals... very.. hobbitish.
Anyhow, Opeth is in my top favorite bands, why not. I don't have a top 5 though. |
AJFA is where its at. :D
No. |
What do you guys think that best mellow song opeth made? Mine is probably closure. I just love that song. And when they played it live...wow that was amazing.
|
Definitely Hope Leaves.
|
Opeth is basically the best band to emerge since Metallica.:
That statement is self-biased. Metallica emerged in the mainstream way more then Opeth did, but I see your point... |
What do you guys think that best mellow song opeth made? Mine is probably closure. I just love that song. And when they played it live...wow that was amazing.
Yeah, Closure is great. I love playing that third riff. My favs, for the moment, would be Epilogue or Patterns In The Ivy II. |

Formed from one of the former members of Emperor and his wife. It's really dark, dark music. It's in a sort of avant garde, prog metal style. Really good stuff. As for my favourite bands, they vary between Opeth, Tool, Pain Of Salvation and The Mars Volta frequently. And Hope Leaves is my favourite mellow Opeth song. My god I love it. |
To bid You farewell, Benighted, Face of Melinda, Windowpane, In my time of need, Hope Leaves, To Rid the Disease, Isolation Years... No, I just can't decide which is their best mellow song.
Opeth are in my top 5 favourite bands ever, and I can't see them being budged for a long time. They're up there with Tool, Radiohead and Muse. Maybe with In Flames, TMV and APC worming their way near the top 5. |
Face of Melinda is my favourite mellow song, with Closure or Windowpane second.
Opeth are absolutely in my top 5 list, together with /in no particular order) Tool, Queensr˙che, Nile and Gamma Ray. |
It's all in isolation years. That's the most brilliant mellow song.
|
It's all in isolation years. That's the most brilliant mellow song.
That song is pretty amazing. They're too good at writing mellow and heavy. |
