There is more intelligent dubstep ("wonky"), and you can listen to it longer. Dubstep itself is pretty cool, but becomes boring after 10 tracks or so. It wouldn't happen though if artists experiment with structure, because you can predict when will the wobble start like, always.
Check out the label Planet mu for good dubstep. Also almost anything that Mary Anne Hobbs digs is cool, and Quantum Leap by Slugabed is the best dubstep music video. (Let me know if you know any other great videos, by the way...I'm interested!) |

Planet Mu. Mary Anne Hobbs. What is this, 2005? |

Not at all, and the most obvious answer for that is because artists would never bother releasing albums if that was meant to be the case. If boredom creeps in after a prolonged period that's a problem at the listener's end, and not to do with what format he chose to listen to it with (mix album, 12" or full length LP) |

i wasn't saying it was boring, more justifying the similar structure that the majority of dubstep (and most dance music) subscribes to. obviously not all tracks are going to follow the same structure. but even on full length albums (silkie and kryptic minds are two that come to mind), the tracks follow a similar pattern. even if its not intentional, the established structure is so established because its intended to be mixed. |
Again I disagree, especially in regards to full lengths. The reason why most songs fall under a similar structure on a lp is because they're following a consistent theme; it's the individual 12" release where the artist breaks out the most. And its those releases that will ultimately get mixed into a set, the while label promo or the individual release over some mid-range lp track

but the majority of singles released do follow the same structure. and the majority of tracks on albums follow the same structure. i'm not saying that everything has to be built the same, nor that the structure has any bearing on the quality of the track. good and bad songs are both structured the same. put it this way. traditionally, dance music is built on similar structures. house, techno, jungle, whatever, its all usually built in the same style. because dance music is designed to be mixed. that's why the style exists, to make it easy to mix between songs, to allow djs to readily implement the tunes into their set. dubstep isn't that new and innovative that it forsakes all this. sure, there's songs that don't follow the traditional structure, ones that break from the mould. but there were in all the other genres of music too. i'm not saying that the structure holds too much bearing on the artistic merit of the song or that sticking to or breaking from the structure is inherently better. i'm just explaining why the majority of dubstep songs (and dance tracks in general) follow a similar structure. |

I agree with everything you've said, but also a lot of songs on one LP will generally always follow a similar pattern because they're all following the theme of that album etc etc Also, new Machine Drum is ace |

Dev, have you got any good dnb rec's for me that aren't on your lists as I've heard 90% of that? I've been really digging fanu recently, if you know stuff in a similar vein. Thanks.
|
If you like Fanu have you looked into ASC and Bill Laswell? Tbh, I haven't been keeping up with d & b all that much lately, been listening to too much funky. Those are the first names I can think of, but I can just give you some more recs of just general stuff if you want
|
I'll check those out, as I mentioned I've heard most of the stuff you've got in your lists. I'm a bit lost musically at the moment, I've been totally rinsing my prog and deep house collections and I need some new stuff for work :/
