pretty similar to iron lung but there's a lot of really cool stilted and jarring guitarwork that makes it interesting

Nah actually. Modern BM bores me in the most part and I think stylistically that PV has replaced the abbrasive aggression that music listeners expect from it. There's a few exceptions, but BM in most is not the same genre as it originally was. PV is new and exciting.

depends on what bm you listen to. if you listen to the more popular shit with good production values or cascadian bm (fauna, wittr) then yeah i agree, its boring and has gotten less abrasive

listen to anything from the black twilight circle and you'll see that there is still abrasion, blastbeats, hissing guitars and wretching vocals to be found

and i dont think PV is that much newer than BM. first wave bm was mid 80s and first wave PV was 89 or 90

the revival of PV is recent (which is what i think you are referring to), and very creative and exciting but i think that BM revivalists and PV revivalists (for lack of a better word) are equally exciting. i think that there is plenty of black metal and especially black noise that is wayyy more abrasive and unsettling than PV
