If you can't do it without a mic, you're not screaming, you're whispering.
oh so thats how you do it?

mutant! 11-19-2005 03:44 AM

OK, just to make sure... So on Prison Song it's just Serj singing the chorus?

Skit 11-19-2005 05:49 AM

Serj And Daron :thumb:

And "growling" by breathing into the mic isnt growling it all its just overdriving the mic so the soundwaves get too high an pop.
Theres an art to actually screaming ;)
has anyone else tried listening to it on mtv's site? Doesnt even load for me
I tried, but then quickly decided not to listen to it. It loaded fine for me though. I just want to keep the album a surprise for myself and not ruin anything about it.

Prince of Darkness 11-19-2005 03:50 PM

I heard rumours a while back that SOAD are gonna stop making music because of the US and Bush.

True?

heh, i would do the same, but i ended up giving away the mesmerize album because it was a huge disappointment. Things look like they might be better, after hearing their first single.

i love this band and i cantwait 4 a new album (if they make one):)

PepsiMetal 11-19-2005 10:48 PM

That's pretty good and nice rating as well. You should have indicated a nice solo in lonely day though. A very good song instrumentally.

Kyle 11-20-2005 05:02 AM

great review, I'm gona go back and listen to the album again now.

Prince of Darkness 11-20-2005 06:04 AM

great review. I like all the songs on the album, but Lonely Day and Soldier Side being the worst. Although I like them aswell.

Spiritofmosa 11-20-2005 06:06 AM

honestly, the only reason why i would want to buy this album more than other bands' is because of how mainstream they are.

Skit 11-20-2005 07:23 AM

G.P. 11-20-2005 01:27 PM

if by bassy growls you meant the one is sugar (WHO can believe you),that is done by shavo.

Skit 11-20-2005 01:35 PM

Shavo has never sang on a record I dont understand where that rumor came from..

Shavo sometimes sings live but not often

Yeah, so am I. There was a good review in the Observer Music Magazine though :)
Edit: and Spat, that was a really well written review.

You get some free artwork with it I think.

Kyle 11-20-2005 02:22 PM

Listening to the self titled, I havn't listened to it in so long...definately my favorite.

Dr. Jake Destructo 11-20-2005 04:03 PM

Great review, SOP. I've still not heard the album though. :p

Brooxy 11-20-2005 05:30 PM

I like it. It's a bit different to even "Mezmerize," and the instant playability isn't all that high, but after listening to it a few times, it's grown on me a lot. Probably joint second favorite album :thumb:

xrockerachickx 11-20-2005 06:36 PM

which one? hypnotize?
so ur saying it's a good album then right...
it better be. or i will shoot myself

YDload 11-20-2005 06:40 PM

No just shoot yourself in the hand so you can't type anymore. Your spelling is really awful and your posts indicate that you're one of the millions of SOAD fans who think they should sound like the S/T album all the time and never progress at all.

Unnamed_One 11-21-2005 12:39 AM

Hmm I think the band would be decent if they didn't burst into random and "off-key" sounding vocals and guitars after a decent sounding riff (buried in there every once in a while).

PepsiMetal 11-21-2005 01:25 AM

That's pretty much what soad has been since they started. Most soad's songs speed up and slow down all of a sudden. They don't have many songs where it's same tempo and style throughout the whole song. I like hypnotize, tentative is a great song. And Attack is also great. It's different than mesmerize, but both albums are great. Mesmerize is kinda slower and lighter, and hypnotize is alot heavier, faster, and resembles older soad more. But every soad album is different, so really, they probably will never make 2 similar albums.

Moondog 11-21-2005 04:49 AM

System of a Down seem to be losing their creative edge. Their first album was a bizarre hybrid of Mr. Bungle and sharp metal. It was extremely good too. Toxicity was a bit more refined but a more focused album and was also extremely good. Steal This Album! was like a mixture of the first two albums, which is understandable considering they were left from the Toxicity sessions, great songs here but less of an "epic" listen than Toxicity. Now I don't know what happened to Mezmerize. I mean honestly, listen to the first three and then to Mezmerize. Mezmerize is a watered down Toxicity. Now I know that this album follows somewhat of a concept as how important the media effects the population and how controlling it all is. Does this mean System should have dumbed down their songwriting lyrically and melodically to also captivate this population? Artistically no. And what's worse is this new Hypnotize song is ineffective and watered down as well. What happened to the fresh and intellectual System of a Down who didn't constantly repeat the same message and lose their creative flair? Yeah they're Lost in Hollywood.

Kyle 11-21-2005 05:06 AM

I too am not a great fan of the lyrics themselves, but it's not really an issue with the theme more with Daron's writing style. To be honest I completely disagree with you moondog, if anything I would say Soad are becoming more creative. Some of the guitar parts are completely new for soad and perhaps show their Armenian influences, I also think they have explored vocal harmonies alot more especially on mesmerize.

Skit 11-21-2005 05:15 AM

"System of a Down who didn't constantly repeat the same message"

Look in any lyric booklet by SOAD and you'll see most of there songs are repeated over and over.

"Lose their creative flair"

Thats your opinion, I think most of the new guitar parts especially on th Hypnotize album are some of the greatest the band has written

"Mezmerize is a watered down Toxicity"

Once again, thats your opinion.
SOAD have said numerous times they dont want to write another toxicity they want to keep moving forward and changing there music.

Maybe fans like you should to?

Moondog 11-21-2005 05:20 AM

The guitar parts may be new for SoaD but they're not as creative as they used to be in my opinion. Most of their songs now use the same chord structures, tones and keys. Use of acoustic and foreign instruments aren't a big deal unless your composing gets better. The vocal harmonies don't bring anything good to the music as far as I'm concerned. First off, they're barely harmonies rather than Daron singing along. I love Serj's voice and I think it's even recently been used badly. Daron's parts seem to bring in an abrasive amateurish type of tone to the lyrics and song altogether. The only good creative step up in the band that I can notice is Dolmayan's drumming. Especially on Revenga and Question!.

Moondog 11-21-2005 05:22 AM

Skit as far as the messages I definitely don't see that in the first album. And I don't see it anywhere near as much as I do on Mezmerize.

And of course what I said was my opinion. Anything I say should be automatically stamped as an opinion of mine. I'm not trying to set an end-all opinion on the band for everyone.

Kyle 11-21-2005 05:30 AM

They are constantly doing things that they have never done before and are slowly but surely moving away from constant use of drop-tuned powerchords. I also love serj's voice and would prefer it if he sang most of the time, but the vocal harmonies on Lost in Hollywood are orgasmic. I think if a band lacks creativity they are stuck in a position like Oasis or The Strokes where sound doesn't really change from album to album. Soad on the other hand can't be guilty of that, no album sounds like the one they did before and I can only see their sound continuing to change.

The biggest thing obviously being that they've stepped up the guitars to drop C# instead of drop C. The day System plays every song on an album in standard tuning is the day I will lie down on the floor and proceed with my Tantric perpetual orgasm.
I also love serj's voice and would prefer it if he sang most of the time, but the vocal harmonies on Lost in Hollywood are orgasmic.
I enjoy both voices equally. Daron has a very pop-punk voice which is better than anything a sarcastic socio-political metal band could hope for; especially since it's System, who never take themselves too seriously and enjoy poking fun at pop culture. It is one of the most ironic things that I have ever witnessed in music. And yes, the harmonies on Lost In Hollywood are amazing; ditto for BYOB, even though it's just diatonic thirds all the way.

big80smullet 11-21-2005 09:21 AM

I just got hypnotise and i have to say its better than mesmerise. maybe thats because its fresher but i like it better.
