You lose.

Well_Respected_Man 11-12-2004 03:25 PM

What are we even talking about?

Tangy zizzle 11-12-2004 03:30 PM

Life.

Well_Respected_Man 11-12-2004 03:32 PM

Fuck off then.

Tangy zizzle 11-12-2004 03:36 PM

Settle down brah.

Well_Respected_Man 11-12-2004 03:39 PM

I feel better already.

Iai 11-12-2004 04:44 PM
I got Gentleman yesterday.
Excellent! Verdict?

Iai 11-12-2004 04:46 PM

And as for what I'M digging right now.....Avril Lavigne. I'm serious. It's been a crappy year, to be honest, but Under My Skin is one of my albums of the year. I can't remember when I last heard a pure pop album so well executed. It even surpasses the best efforts of Sugababes, who I usually use as an example of good modern pop.

Tangy zizzle 11-12-2004 04:47 PM

I dunno yet aye. I'm still liking Congregation a little better, but it's a great disc.

Sugababes > Avril soooo badly. They is got the slutty hot thing goin' on as well.

But seriously, Avril?

Iai 11-12-2004 04:53 PM

I'm completely serious. Before I heard Under My Skin in full, I'd have said Sugababes > Avril without hesitating, but it's a damn good album. It's not likely to convert people to pop from other genres, but as a genre piece it's pretty much flawless.

Maybe I should clarify - when I say it surpasses the best of Sugababes, I meant albums. Sugababes have 2 or 3 individual songs Avril has yet to better, but I find them frustratingly inconsistent. I mean, they release something as great as Hole In The Head, and two singles later they've released a pile of crap like the new single.

Tangy zizzle 11-12-2004 05:03 PM

I kinda agree, but Sugababes still pwn Avril.

I only like one of her songs, which I forget the name of. I wanna say "Im with you"...??

Also, I don't think Avril truely encompasses the whole "pop star" label, or even the "anti-pop star" for that matter. Whereas Sugababes are a true representation of pop-stars. They are sexy, they portray their pop status and don't shy away from it. They use their looks to sell their music, but know that they are much more than eye-candy.

Avril needs to embrace her looks and her stance on music as a whole.

Iai 11-12-2004 05:20 PM

Yes, the song you're thinking of was called 'I'm With You'. Starts with a cello, she's in a club in the video, etc.

I get what you mean about the pop-star thing, but then, I was only looking at the music, and I'm taking a more classic view of 'pop'. And I think Avril DOES embrace her stance on music, it's just the media and the moronic punk "purists" (read: idiots who know nothing) make her out to be this monster trying to destroy rock. She's fully aware she's a pop singer and nothing more.

I'll find some links of her embracing her looks too. :naughty:

On a brighter, more Tangy-friendly note, I'm now listening to The College Dropout. I'm basically trying to find all 2004's great albums, because it struck me today that there really aren't many that I've heard.

Tangy zizzle 11-12-2004 05:25 PM

College Dropout is in my top 10 easily. Kanye's a madman.

Oooh yeah, bring them links ON.

Just but two examples of Avril "embracing her looks".

milkandlaxatives 11-12-2004 05:29 PM

i saw GWAR last night at the house of blues. we were waiting in the restaurant until we got kicked out for an avril lavigne show. sorry guys, but i HATE avril lavigne. i don't think her music is good, i don't like the way she conveys herself... i just don't like anything about her. plus she's canadian.
GWAR was awesome though. for someone not that much into metal, i liked it. quite entertaining. all that remains and dying fetus opened for them, they weren't that great. but when you have a band in costumes like that come on the stage and kill michael jackson, paris hilton, and laci peterson... you can't help but like the humor in it. got my hiney kicked, got food coloring in my contacts from the fake blood and oil and laci peterson's baby's guts/puke. the wifebeater i had on under two other shirts got soaked. yay for being in the front row...
and as for now, i'm listening to blind melon. mmm. deserted is a great song, as well as change. no rain is overrated. and it's hard to sing that high.

Goodness me... bittova stunner.

Is that tattoo real?

Iai 11-12-2004 05:56 PM

I think it isn't. Not sure though.

Happymeal 11-12-2004 08:33 PM

I heavily recommend Animal Collective to everyone.

br3ad_man 11-12-2004 08:41 PM

Avril > Sugarbabes. For some reason, I get chills from some of Avril's songs. I have never heard a Sugarbabes song that I didn't think was boring as hell.

MEEEEOOOOOWWWWW

Iris 11-12-2004 09:10 PM

That reminded me of "The Grudge".

Well_Respected_Man 11-12-2004 09:12 PM

Ha, it's actually from the "Leaf House".

Happymeal 11-12-2004 09:17 PM

*high 5's WRM*

Do you have "Bet You'll Fly"? It's not in Sung Tongs, and it sounds a bit different from the songs in that album. I'm loving it right now.

Well_Respected_Man 11-12-2004 09:53 PM

I'll have to check that out now, thanks for the reccomendation. :thumb:

Have you checked out Olivia Tremor Control yet?

Happymeal 11-12-2004 10:01 PM

I thought I saw a 27-track album of theirs on slsk:confused: I think I've heard them before but they didn't stick to me much that time. I'm dl'ing some of their songs right now:)

Well_Respected_Man 11-12-2004 10:25 PM

Um did you mean bat you'll fly instead of bet you'll fly. It most be a rariety because I couldn't find it on any of their albums

Edit: My bad it's on spirits

Happymeal 11-12-2004 10:41 PM

I got it Bet You'll Fly:confused: Oh well, I just got that song randomly anyway. You can get it off me if you want.

Zappa 11-12-2004 10:43 PM

Gustav Mahler's first symphony, "The Titan." Mmmm.

Goldfinger - Superman

A very awesome ska song. Very catchy lil tune, and perfect to listen to on the way to the beach.

G. Love and Special Sauce - Milk & Cereal

Another catchy tune. . .but obviously the song isn't serious. I heard it from the video on albinoblacksheep, and I catch myself singing/humming it while eating cereal in the mornings.

Not bad. I'm still furiously trying to find some of the avant-classical stuff Bartender and Subtle Dagger are always going on about.

But right now, we'll be enjoying some Aretha Franklin. kplzthx

Iris 11-13-2004 05:23 PM

Zappa 11-13-2004 05:27 PM

Eric Dolphy.

But that's not unusual.

Iris 11-13-2004 05:30 PM

Zappa, could you hook me up with some good blues/jazz bands?

sweboy 11-13-2004 05:31 PM

I've been digging the allsmighty Looptroop a lot lately, and the Swedish reggae sensation Helt Off, among a lot of other stuff.

Happymeal 11-13-2004 05:33 PM

So I raided my library again and borrowed

Sneaker Pimps - Becoming X
Radiohead - Kid A
Rufus Wainwright - Poses
Tom Waits - Mule Variations
Mazzy Star - Among My Swan

and bought Rival Schools - United by Fate

Iris 11-13-2004 05:37 PM
