Theoretical Girls' self-titled. This is really good, in places.
I've been getting into The Contortions among other No New York bands again lately, and that looks mighty interesting.

Zappa 07-24-2006 11:13 PM

I was reading about Branca, and the Theoretical Girls came up as his first band. No wave is awesome, and if you like No New York there'll be stuff on the Theoretical Girls compilation that tickles you a whole whole lot, and little to offend you.

Sam 07-25-2006 12:39 AM

Burmese - Preyer

A pretty cool sludgey metal band in the vein of Boris, but a little on the more abrasive-noisy side. Also, the latest Black Dice record has been playing alot.
So I've been digging those and all the sweet shit I saw at Splendour in the Grass.
Did you see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? I always assumed they were lame and never listened to them but they were ****ing sweet at Splendour. They had the worst crowd besides Wolfmother, but they were so damn cool. Karen O is both incredibly cool and incredibly unattractive.

Little Man being Erased 07-25-2006 02:22 AM

Yeah the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were awesome. They were great the first time I saw them too so I was expecting a good performance. How good was "Maps"?

I Was A Kaleidoscope 07-25-2006 02:39 AM

Limp Wrist - Want Us Dead EP
Oh No! Oh My! - Oh No! Oh My!
Pole - 45/45
I Heart Hiroshima - A 3 Letter Word For Candy
Ad Astra Per Aspera - An Introduction To...

& ariel pink is a genius.

br3ad_man 07-25-2006 02:52 AM
Yeah the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were awesome. They were great the first time I saw them too so I was expecting a good performance. How good was "Maps"?
Totally. The guitarist dude is a badass.

Interstate 07-25-2006 05:50 AM

Today so far:

Idlewild - The Remote Part
Rolf Harris - The Best Of Rolf Harris - I listened to most of this while I was getting ready for work this morning. It's, erm, strangely catchy, in a messed up sort of way.

Kyle 07-25-2006 06:27 AM

Karen O is sooo hawt though  I'm still deciding whether to see them again at Reading Festival, Hundred Reasons are playing at the same time and I've never seen them.

These Arms Are Snakes - Easter

This album ****ing slays.

asymm 07-25-2006 02:32 PM

Phonophani - Phonophani

Luxor 07-25-2006 03:19 PM
Ad Astra Per Aspera - An Introduction To...
I haven't heard that, but Cubic Zirconia is good.

Zappa 07-25-2006 03:24 PM

Whole lotta Debussy solo piano stuff. I've been listening to Walter Gieseking's 50s recording of his complete works for solo piano. I also listened to Debussy's La Mer for orechestra, performed by the NYPO under Bernstein.

Sam 07-25-2006 03:55 PM

Debussy is one of the few classical composers I genuinely like.

Zappa 07-25-2006 04:02 PM

He's one of several for me. I love late romantic music and a lot of 20th century stuff, too. Then earlier stuff here and there. Mostly I've gotten into those last two periods, because I'm still really new to classical music.

sketchyjoe 07-25-2006 04:23 PM

Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol. 1 & 2
So good.

JonM 07-25-2006 04:31 PM

He's too extravagantly violent for me.

YDload 07-25-2006 05:13 PM
Hum - You'd Prefer an Astronaut
Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience

picked these up for two bucks each at Goodwill. Good deal.
Downward Is Heavenward is the best HUM album in my opinion.

Zmev 07-25-2006 05:14 PM
picked these up for two bucks each at Goodwill. Good deal.
I stole Kid A and Urban Hymms from savers once.

Cmon its just like stealing from the internet.

Ornery Cephalopod 07-25-2006 05:40 PM

Got tickets for Tool/Isis... so I've been spinning my Isis albums in rejoicement.

Also a bit of Kaizers Orchestra.

Boris and Merzbow - Sun Baked Snow Cave
Downward Is Heavenward is the best HUM album in my opinion.
I myself perfer 'You'd Perfer An Astronaut.'

NineBitFable 07-25-2006 07:06 PM
I myself perfer 'You'd Perfer An Astronaut.'
As do I. Stars is a perfect song, and in a fair world would have been a hundred times more popular than it was.

Also, Electra 2000 isn't as bad as some people make it out to be.

Happymeal 07-25-2006 07:53 PM

Songs: Ohia - The Lioness
Roxy Music - Avalon
Still diggin'

These Arms Are Snakes - Easter

and also

Boris and Merzbow - Sun Baked Snow Cave
It's out already?

asdf 07-25-2006 08:18 PM

Right now it's Ween - Pure Guava.

This is some crazy ****. I know I've heard this album a few years ago, but I forgot how weird it is.

YDload 07-25-2006 08:19 PM

Almost every song on Pink Flag uses just E, G, and A for the riffs. And yet it's still a fun album, so take THAT prog bands >:-}

Robert Crumb 07-25-2006 09:26 PM

Caetano Veloso. Best ever.

Dog 07-25-2006 09:27 PM

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Hank Williams III - Straight To Hell
Pere Ubu - Datapink In The Year Zero EP
It's out already?
It leaked, I don't think it's due out until september or october. And yeah, it kicks.

Little Man being Erased 07-25-2006 10:23 PM

Wire - Pink Flag

Hot damn, this album is rocketing up my '75 to '84 list. An instant favourite if I've ever heard one.

Robert Crumb 07-25-2006 11:30 PM

I just got Glenn Branca's The Ascension and it's pretty awesome. I don't know if I can slide it on to the list.

Zappa 07-25-2006 11:35 PM

Symphony No. 1 is better, I think. The Ascension has some gold, but all of his albums seem to sink into massive skull-crushing noise for the last 20 minutes or more, and it gets a little sad.

Robert Crumb 07-25-2006 11:54 PM

I'll try to check that out soon. I'm experiencing mild music overload as of late, though.

br3ad_man 07-26-2006 03:20 AM

Slint at the moment. I wanted to listen to something else before, but I forgot so I'm listening to Slint.

I Was A Kaleidoscope 07-26-2006 04:38 AM

i'm getting into pavement again, sorta
The Frogs - It's Only Right and Natural

hahahaha so good
i've been wanting that album for ages.

mr_jackalope 07-26-2006 06:45 AM
Caetano Veloso. Best ever.
True! Tropicalia is one my favorite music movements ever.
I found a good-quality R.E.M. live show from 1984 on soulseek. Chronic Town - Lifes Rich Pageant era material. Beautiful.
My dad once saw them perform that material in a basement...a few weeks before the release of Chronic Town. Leetness.

I've basically just been exploring the Rune Grammofon label a lot more. I already liked Supersilent and the Shining, so I'm checking the rest of what they have to offer. That retrospective is a real helper.

sketchyjoe 07-26-2006 07:05 AM

The Steinways - Missed the Boat
The Unlovables - Crush Boyfriend Heartbreak
Buzz-pop at it's simple best.

ATM 07-26-2006 09:54 AM

If you guys need Frog mps I have tons. My uncle sent me them.

Anyway, I'm diggin on Tor Bruce where are an awesome Bitpop band.

also the Boris Merzbow collaboration needs to be heard to be believed.

oh and I made my mom listen to Jorge Ben all the way from the metro haha

Amazing label. I own a decent portion of their releases, so if you'd like anything in particular - I can probably supply it. The retrospective box set (Until Human Voices Wake Us and We Drown) is one of my favorite musical objects I own.

Matt? 07-26-2006 11:57 AM

mineral- the power of failing

this album is awesome but i feel like it spawned that now cliche pop punk/ emo whine
