 wtf

in your oppinion, DOTR or RIR?

i<3 thin lizzy

Lord Abortion 04-11-2006 07:53 AM

That's tough... I prefer RIR at the moment...but only just.

-The Frank 04-11-2006 07:57 AM

The one thing i really love about RiR is the intro+the wickerman combination, i always get goosebumps when they all jump in. How does wildest dreams+intro rate on a goosebump factor?
1-10

Lord Abortion 04-11-2006 08:05 AM

I'd give it a good 7.5-8

Sounds like good stuff, i still have to wait till late may till i can get my hands on one :(

Wow, that sucks.

/has had DotR since Feb 6th:p

JamJar 04-11-2006 10:13 AM

RIR > DOTR mainly because of the best setlist ever. Sign Of The Cross, The Clansman and Dream of mirrors in one show is unbelieveable.

pep 04-11-2006 10:36 AM

Actually, thats why I didnt like RiR that much. It was cool, but some of those songs were too long for my taste when I watched it for the first time. Maybe now IŽll like it more.

JamJar 04-11-2006 10:50 AM

I'm generally a prog head and really appreciate the more lengthy pieces.

temporary 04-11-2006 10:55 AM

Meh, my only problem with RiR (and DotR) is that they're aren't enough oldies like Killers, Die With Your Boots On, or Powerslave, all of which I think would be amazing live. But its still one of the best damn music DVDs I've ever seen (I gave it a five in my Sputnik review.)

Another question: I already own the CD for DotR, is it worth it getting the DVD?

Edit: Yeah, I agree with JamJar, I love it when Maiden shows their prog colors.

JamJar 04-11-2006 11:31 AM

The DotR DVD is worth it enough to see them play the DoD songs.

pep 04-11-2006 11:32 AM

I totally agree with you, some oldies would make them better.

Lord Abortion 04-11-2006 12:00 PM

Yeah, I really want to see some of the less well known songs on the next tour.

blackthorne 04-11-2006 12:11 PM

is it just me or in DoTR does dave's guitar seem much quiter than the others.....

JamJar 04-11-2006 12:13 PM
is it just me or in DoTR does dave's guitar seem much quiter than the others.....
If you're talking about the DVD then the guitars are totally screwed unless I play them through my laptop. On the sterio version, you can barely hear Janick's and on the Surround Sound version, Dave's and Janick's are quiet.

Yeah, because H's is the center channel, so he seems louder.

Prince of Darkness 04-11-2006 01:47 PM

Ok, so I'm seeing Maiden live in December. Amazing.

But...

I have no albums of them! Only like 30 loose songs. No albums. Which albums do you guys recommend? I like:

The Wicker Man
Aces High
Number of the Beast
The Nomad
The Mercenary
Run to the Hills(duh)
Hallowed by thy Name
Two Minutes to Midnight

Yeah, so those are my favourite songs. What's the first album I should get?
or download.

JamJar 04-11-2006 01:57 PM

Brave New World, Number Of The Beast or Powerslave should start you off well. Make sure you buy them... or else.

EDIT: And cool avatar you got.

Lord Abortion 04-11-2006 02:05 PM

I would Recommend Seventh son, Piece of Mind and The X-Factor.

Stormrider 04-11-2006 02:08 PM

Ollie, are those you're favorite Maiden albums ?

Sorry if you've said this before, I havn't been posting in this thread for a long time.

Yeah, but not in that order,

1.POM
2.X-factor
3.Seventh son/Brave New World

Stormrider 04-11-2006 02:11 PM

Hmm OK. I have POM and NOTB. so far...

JamJar 04-11-2006 02:12 PM

The absence of Powerslave in your top 3 disturbs me.

Josh 04-11-2006 04:19 PM

'sup guys. been away all day, but the newest diary is up:
Kevin Shirley's Studio Diary #4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello, Maiden fans. I'm sorry that some of you disapprove of my diary's content, and I do care, but really - what can I tell you. Song titles, NO; lyrics, NO; album title, NO - so bear with me as I attempt to interest you with the little I can share. By the way, it cost me $3000 to have you all hit my site - so that's no reason for me to do it - I don't hear a great call to sell Caveman t-shirts and soap-on-a-rope on my website. All that said - here's what happened...

A GREAT WEEK!!!!!
Bruce came in and sang three songs over two days - very well too! He cycles in on his bike - about 4 o'clock and leaves about 8 - and we're glad to see him go when he finally packs his bags, as the last hour is always spent listening to a discourse on planes and flight patterns and various other topics that he's very well versed in! I compiled the lead vocals from about 3 - 6 tracks depending on the sections of the songs I was concentrating on. I used about 80% of the original live tracking vocal, cut when the band cut the basic tracks - and there's a magic spirit on them! The three amigos, Adrian, Davey and Jan also came in - Jan did an amazing solo - filled with his trademark
"Blackmoresque" licks and some awesome wild whammy bar nonsense, Adrian did one of his note-perfect precision solos and Davey rolled out some of his fluid and flighty solos, and we have finished 3 of the 10 album tracks - AND mixed two!! Finished! FINAL MIXES! the album opener, and rocker single, and a great durgy track with an evil 7/8 groove! * We are so far ahead of schedule - Steve's bass sounds totally sick, he says he's never been happier with how the band, his bass, and the album is sounding - and I think this could be as big as anything they've ever recorded. It's definitely the high point of our relationship - that is Maiden with me producing.

And that is what happened in the studio. Bruce likes to suck on the caramel from Twix bars, after removing both the chocolate and the biscuit first; Steve eats pasta for dinner - with cream, pesto and bacon - every night! - and guards his private life strongly (adamant that he wants to keep me away from his 21 year old daughter, who is gorgeous and a really good singer!); Adrian has me scour Google maps for good fishing sites and hears tuning problems all over the place, where there are none (I think he'd even drive perfectionist producer Mutt Lange crazy); and Jan goes to the footy and on the piss with his mate, Ginger Mick, and doesn't seem to give a toss about anything. He
likes to be away from home cos his wife loads him up with manual chores, which he does but hates doing! Sensibly, they like to watch their pennies, and I guess that's how you get to keep 'em. I, on the other hand, am a spendthrift! Bruce is Bruce - the one, the only! Lovable, irreplaceable, unique and an incredible voice! That's the way Maiden should be!

I work hard in the studio, and play hard. Always have - and my evenings are generally spent drinking with much younger friends, who have me pay and like to imbibe to absolute inebriation! Just last night I had to rescue a totally inebriated young lady from the London School of Economics who had gone "coma" in the ladies bathroom of the London Soho House! On Tuesday, I took Drew and Alex out drinking - Drew was sick for two days, and Alex was beyond useless the next day. Pathetic! 'Arry maintains it's my fault because I took them young 'uns out - wha'evah!

And that's all - off to the studio. Tomorrow I'm going to bicycle to Brighton - about 65 miles, or 100kms - and tonight I am going to see a William Blake thingy at some gallery.

I have no new pictures, so have included this one. "Arry says his arse isn't as small anymore! It's an image from the new Ross Halfin book on Maiden, I believe!

Take care - Up The Irons!
temporary 04-11-2006 04:27 PM
Hmm OK. I have POM and NOTB. so far...
Get Powerslave, ASAP. That or any of their other albums (except maybe No Prayer For The Dieing) seriously, the worst album Maiden ever turned out wasn't even bad just...average.

Great news in the diary entry, two final mixes sounds awsome.

Lord Abortion 04-11-2006 04:51 PM

If that sounded any cooler, I would be changing my pants again.

Deth 04-11-2006 08:53 PM

omg splooge.

I'm so excited.

ashman 04-12-2006 01:40 AM

I wanna know song names...NOW!

Apocalyptic Raids 04-12-2006 01:47 AM
Hmm OK. I have POM and NOTB. so far...
Powerslave and Seventh Son next.

Riva 04-12-2006 02:10 AM

And then Somewhere In Time, which is a great album.

Apocalyptic Raids 04-12-2006 02:11 AM

That's the only pre-7th son Maiden album I'm missing.

Riva 04-12-2006 02:36 AM

Poor show, Jono. I got given it to me by my girlfriend. That and Seventh Son.

-The Frank 04-12-2006 02:45 AM
And then Somewhere In Time, which is a great album.
I'd actually wait before getting that album, for me, it was the hardest album getting into. But once you get into it, its awesome.

TLOALDR = pwnage
Hmm OK. I have POM and NOTB. so far...
Before you buy the XFactor or SSOAS, you should really get both dianno albums.
except maybe No Prayer For The Dieing) seriously, the worst album Maiden ever turned out wasn't even bad just...average.

NPFTD>FOTD

truth. :thumb:

Riva 04-12-2006 02:50 AM

I prefer Fear of the Dark. I remember the crap I got from the old school Maiden crew for like The Apparition. :p

JamJar 04-12-2006 04:08 AM
...with an evil 7/8 groove!
Wooh! Signs of more prog.

I prefer FOTD to NPFTD and Somewhere in time is indeed hard to get into but is so worth it.

crag 04-12-2006 04:12 AM
and we have finished 3 of the 10 album tracks - AND mixed two!! Finished! FINAL MIXES! the album opener, and rocker single, and a great durgy track with an evil 7/8 groove!

NPFTD and FOTD are my 2 least favourite Maiden albums. As great as they are they've just got nothing on the other albums. Although having said that i've become quite taken with Running Silent Running Deep recently.

Riva 04-12-2006 05:39 AM

Be Quick or Be Dead and From Here To Eternity are instant classics.

Josh 04-12-2006 06:06 AM

BQOBD and FHTE are sooo awesome, then Afraid to Shoot Strangers pwns, and personally i love Judas Be By Guide.

FOTD > NPFD.
