Are the new strings different than the old strings?

It sounds like your jazz just needed a minor truss rod adjustment.

Gaslight - my GSR was actually my second bass... but wasn't it just the best forever? Such a solid unit. I literally had two accidents with it and it suffered no ill effects... once I was biking home from school and I had brought the GSR with me for band class, when a school bus leaving the area failed to stop in time. I hit the brakes as the bus was blowing the intersection, bailed off the bike and literally fell on top of the bass, at a high rate of speed... and then very nearly burst into tears. No sooner did I get up and unzip the bag that I found the bass to be absolutely fine - one little bitty dent in the finish, and otherwise just perfect. Still in tune!

Another time the school band was touring schools and centres in the area for a day's worth of sets. We had just finished the last set at the last school at three PM, and because my drummer and guitarist were both in the school band with me, the guitarist's little brother jumps up and starts screaming "MATT! SHAWN! MATT! PLAY SOME JCS SONGS!" so everyone in the audience starts laughing and cheering (we were kind of popular at the time) and the teachers are basically saying no way, because we'd have to keep the bus waiting that much longer. but we all start clapping, myself included... and then the strap literally fell off my bass and I helplessly watched it crash to the floor. But again, not even a dent.

Dammit, now I really miss that bass. heheh.

Yeah man, mine was in the wars too. Fell off the strap twice from a few feet in the air, shattered bits of the plastic finish on both occasions but it still played just fine.

May not have been a fancy bass but it lasted me from high school through to the start of uni when I bought myself a new bass, as a gift not as a necessity. Glad I upgraded because I love my SR500 to bits, but I'm also glad that I got 5 good years of out of my first bass, learnt my first anythings about music on it, did my first gigs on it, all those kinda memories.

No, same type.


It seems the truss rod screw doesnt turn anymore, like its gone as far as it can or something. The bass is about 25 years old so eh

Many jazz basses suffer from that condition. If you throw a couple small washers under the nut, you can get a couple more turns out of it.

If I go back to school full time, my spring semester is going to be scary as sh*t.

When I was doing uni full time here I'm pretty sure it was a minimum of 20 hours class time a week to be counted as full time.

They're all worth 3 credit hours apiece.

12 credit hours is considered full time, at least as far as insurance, loans, and taxes are concerned. You need 15 credit hours weekly to graduate "on time."

That's pretty sweet man, they're a bit less generous about the full time student status here.

How long are your semesters/terms? How many credits do you need to get a degree? I suspect that could be a factor.

I think full-time students here are also expected to hold a job, which is another potential reason.

Different universities all operate to different schedules here.

The main factor of difference here is probably that full time students are not expected to be working, in fact if you're a full time student here you're not supposed to be working (the thinking is, if you've got time to work, then you're not being a full time student).

It should be the case with any adjustable truss rod.

Damn, my Tone Pump Jr preamp crapped out on me and I recently threw out my Brice preamp. Any suggestions as to how to fill the controls for this OLP? It has 4 holes and one switch.

wire direct from pickup to jack, and just have loads of knobs that do nothing. passive ftw.

Well all the uni's in QLD to qualify as "full time" you have to be attending 4 units, although according to centrelink "75% of a full time workload" also quantifies full time, so technically you can do 3 units. Although 2 units is "standard" part time and 1 is just if you're lazy. At the moment I'm doing 3 and they each have 3 hours contact time (sometimes less); at home I do a bit of work but generally i get a lot of it done in between classes.

So basically I do about one and half days legitimate uni work and a few hours reading throughout the week. After that and working (two jobs currently) and band practice 2-3 nights a week I'm pretty wrecked. If uni was legitimately "full time" i wouldn't be able to do any of the things which I only now barely have time to do.

It's funny it can be that different from state to state hey.

Here there's some New Start allowance thing for people who are studying full time and over a certain age or whatever, seeing as you're not meant to be working. It's something hilarious though like $400 a fortnight.

We have some small business thing where centrelink is basically an investor and give you a stupid amount of money for three years. Newstart here I think is if you're chronically unemployed or have just finished a degree or trade. I think.

Needless to say it's impossible to get the small business grant because so many people jumped on the opportunity for a free $30k or whatever.

So anyway, a serious question. I'm going to the doc's about it but can't get in for a while.

I smashed the slapping joint of my thumb pretty badly last Thursday on something that wasn't a string and couldn't play with it the pain was that bad. Thought it'd be fine by Monday night, nope. Still hurts to play today, think I've done some legitimate damage there. Anyone had a similar thing/know what the hell it is.

I can't imagine it being a fracture as movement etc. is fine, just really sore on the side of the joint. FML.

It's probably just a bruise, on a really thin-skinned area of your hands, which have disgusting amounts of nerve endings and very sensitive bones. Give it another week and see how you feel. I've smacked that part of my thumb on desks when tapping my fingers, and I couldn't slap without pain for well over a week.

If you have insurance and cheap co-pay (or however it works in aussie land), you might go see the doc, but he'll probably just tell you to take it easy until the pain goes away.

I actually have no idea man :p The dates are about the extent of the info I've gotten so far, will let you know though. The other exciting news is that we got played on Triple J last night, so we're all pretty stoked about that.

EDIT: On second thoughts, I'm guessing it's the Excelsior in Surry Hills, mate.

Cool man, I've played at both and Surry Hills is definitely the better of the two as far as being a venue goes.
