I don't know why, but I just cannot get into Porcupine Tree... I mean... I like some of their stuff, but a lot of it seems bland to me.

Deadwing took me a while to get into. Into Absentia, not so much, I loved it on the first play.

I prefer Metanoia and Up the Downstair myself.

I guess I'll check out the other stuff then, Deadwing isn't the best example of their sound I'm guessing.

I'm going to reiterate that Finntroll is some of the most 'fun' metal out there.

Trains = best song everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr from Porcupine Tree.

[i]In Absentia[/i] is probably their best album, but the first third is really good (except for "Gravity Eyelids," which I don't like), the middle half is kind of bland, but then it picks up in the end. Really, the first third makes up for the middle passage. But that's just how I spin it.

I like Porcupine Tree an insane amount for reasons I can't explain.

This is the first bad talk ive heard of them...

I would recommend you download the albums In Absentia, Deadwing, and Lightbulb Sun.

Porcupine Tree gets a lot of comparisons to Pink Floyd, but I think they're so far beyond Pink Floyd in many fundamental ways that it's really a very shallow and cursory comparison...It's like saying "it tastes like chicken."

Personally, I think they're the best band ever :-D

Considering they have released so many and so very different studio albums over the years, I think you might find listening to just a bit more than their most recent album to be a valuable way to go about judging the band.

In Absentia is what got me (and apparently a lot of other people I know) hooked onto the band, but I think Lightbulb Sun and Recordings really are their masterpieces.

Songs like [i]Buying New Soul[/i], [i]Disappear[/i], and [i]Russia On Ice[/i] are simply mindblowing.

I bought In Absentia and have listened maybe twice. Not ever something I'll put on just for fun. It has to come on random.

Eh, I disagree that they're overrated, they just have a perhaps overly-rabid and fast-expanding fan base on these boards. Some of the novelty got lost when everybody started raving about them, I guess.

By everybody, I mean the MX community. They're relatively obscure elsewhere from my experience.

Eh, a lot of people know about them. Several people I know not on mx have talked about them endlessly as well. And once I hear about bands off of mx, they're popular.

Like I said, I've experienced it elsewhere besides the boards, and, like Tool, when fans are so rabid, it makes me even less enthusiastic about the music because it's so mediocre and yet so over-praised.

Eh, Sigur Ros is a mood band. I've never had a mood where I am really digging PT though.

Interesting, I guess PT is getting out there. I dunno, I think they're the best band around these days, and that comes from hearing them without any preconcieved notions. I heard In Absentia and Metanoia before I read any of the high praise the band gets and I nearly fainted from euphoria.

Indeed. I just stumbled across Trains on a random mix CD about a year ago that someone gave me...I don't even know who made the CD :-(
