I can only play the intro (the actual riff, not the noise at the very beginning). I found it kinda tricky at first, but it became easier with practice.
what is the noise at the beggining?

Magicaltroll 07-14-2005 08:55 PM

They can play Tool songs?

Futuro 07-14-2005 08:58 PM

my neighbor who is 13, started playing after he heard me play, i have been teaching him since his start 3 years ago, he can play every song on undertow....GOOD

Moses 07-14-2005 09:06 PM

I started drums about one and a half years ago. Too bad I don't have double bass, but since I've been mostly doing jazz I just use a single bass drum for bass drum fills. I like it better that way anyway.
I guess I'm really good and learning or something...
I hear all these people say the songs are difficult to learn. But about a week ago, I was listening to Lateralus and picked up almost all the notes and played with the entire CD (exceot for D/R/T).
/has less than a year of expirience

Yeah! I think I'm actually quite good for my level of expirience.

So right now, I did a 40 minute set of straight Tool songs on guitar.

The Grudge
Sober
Stinkfist
Ticks and Leeches
Part of Me
Lateralus

It all flowed quite well. Even the T&L-->Part of Me-->Lateralus. I would have figured that Part of Me would ruin the wickedness of the songs, but it was really quite awesome.

Moses 07-14-2005 09:25 PM

I have two years on guitar, two and a half on bass, one and a half on drums and 11 years on piano. I'm obviously best at piano.

Mr Herb 07-14-2005 09:57 PM
i could probably help you, (i give lessons to people in my spare time), what part are having problems with?
Nothing really. Its just a hard song, at least for me.

I wont be able to play it till I borrow a double pedal and I only have one crash. no ride and 3 toms. That stuff just makes it tougher.

I also sorta cant seem to imitate the way he hits the snare during the verses. Am sure you ahve noticed he hits different parts. I only recreate 2 of them.

Everything_and_Nothing_3:15 07-14-2005 10:01 PM

^04 November issue of Modern Drummer w/the Thomas Lang interview has the entire transcription of Schism, just to let you know.

Futuro 07-14-2005 10:02 PM

he only does back beats on his snare all other rumors were started by non-drummers. if you back order the last rythm magazine he was in he confirms this, also watch him live.

BlindWriting 07-14-2005 10:02 PM

Modern Drummer rules.

Mr Herb 07-14-2005 10:04 PM

Woah, am gonna get those mags and am watching schism live at hammerstein to see if I can gather something from it thx dudes.

Side note: am buying bass effects on ebay, is this a good idea?

other side note: my local radio station is asking for fans to submit playlists of any type of rock and theyll play as many as they can. Am gonna try and out tool on radio on puerto rico for the first time ever

BlindWriting 07-14-2005 10:07 PM

Completely unrelated:
I heard Meshuggah's I for the first time today. And wow. That's really all I can say.
Easily one of the best heavy metal songs ever recorded.

Expresso 07-14-2005 10:10 PM

Faith you got Ticks man? you should post up if you can.

In my experience the best way to learn Schism is to actually pick up the strings and learn the bass guitar parts. Now, I didn't say you don't have to be good at them, just know them all. Transcriptions are fine for the verses and the last 30 seconds, but for the very tricky time parts before and after the quiet bridge, knowing what the strings are doing will help out alot.

That and having your band play schism with you.

True dude. Ive learned most of it exept the aprts with effects. I havnt even bothered to look at them. Id say it has helped

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-14-2005 10:13 PM

BW- It is quite amazing, huh.

Expresso- Any word on your mics?

Expresso 07-14-2005 10:13 PM

Yeah the bridge is very electronic, you can learn the hits but it probably won't add anything special to your playing.

Jake- Yes! I didn't get all the equip I wanted but I got enough... today I spent alot of time EQ-ing, fixing problems (there were a bunch) ect. tomorrow i'll try takes.

Hell yeah man. "I" is amazing.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-14-2005 10:28 PM

You do have the backing track for it, too, right Expresso?

Expresso 07-14-2005 10:34 PM

Stinkfist?.. Jah. aenema... no

Herbtones! I'm sure you mean that he hits the snare differently to produce a different 'note' in the verse... i've heard this brought up before, If you listen closely, you can hear a pitch change on each snare backbeat. The question is who thinks he actually played that and who thinks it was done in mixing/producing?

True dude! I mean ive been going mad crazy trying to imitate that with the same tone but its crap. Am gonna listen to schism live and Ill tell ya in a sec!

I listned to it live and he only does 2 different beats during the verse. So Ill just play that cause the cd version obviously used like 3 or 4 different tones cause it was done in the studio.

Schism must have taken a while to record.

Dried Muffin Remnants 07-14-2005 10:43 PM

"I" is the ****.

Mr Herb 07-14-2005 11:04 PM

Mr Herb 07-14-2005 11:15 PM

Slipknot is outlawed on puerto rican radio. sucks.

Most of the songs there are current hits, the only reason i see them not playing this is that they might not have schism but o well

Yes man!
I love Meshuggah, one of my favorite bands. I like the album Chaosphere the most.

Mr Herb 07-14-2005 11:26 PM
its not like he can tune his snare during the song or anything.
exactly. I thought at one point he may have 2 snares differently tuned.

Futuro 07-14-2005 11:39 PM
exactly. I thought at one point he may have 2 snares differently tuned.
live the only other thing he uses for his back beat are gunshots.
