Darkthrone are more than Ok

Thor 09-10-2006 07:05 PM

This is no longer the Opeth thread. :)

Daven 09-10-2006 07:06 PM

Opeth is ok.

Txus 09-10-2006 07:11 PM

Opeth are mediocre.

Riva 09-10-2006 07:19 PM

i am the robots 09-10-2006 07:23 PM

How about this thread becomes OPETH VS DARKTHRONE, THE BATTLE OF THE MOST UNRELATED BANDS EVER!

edit: Jason, you ban me, I'll unmake you.

Riva 09-10-2006 07:27 PM

That sounds like a dare. Do you double dare me, Matt. DO YOU?!?

Anglachel 09-10-2006 07:44 PM

Darkthrone isn't good.
Darkthrone is extremely good.
Darkthrone is lame.
I've got a soft spot for them, but I can easily understand why you wouldn't like them.
The only time I listened to Darkthrone, it sounded like static with some shouting overtop.
Darkthrone is ok.
Darkthrone are more than Ok

I agree with Thor

Shattered_Future 09-10-2006 07:45 PM

Man, this episode here has more drama than those stupid new UPN shows.

Opeth in less than 20 days.
That sounds like a dare. Do you double dare me, Matt. DO YOU?!?
I'm willing to take on the Universe ;).

edit: actually, feck that

Shattered_Future 09-10-2006 07:49 PM

And lose horribly?

Futuro 09-10-2006 08:00 PM

Probably already been talked about to death, but what are your opinions on this Axe guy? Last time I saw Opeth, Lopez blew me away. Im nervous about the drumming on the next album :(

Thor 09-10-2006 08:04 PM

I'm sure he'll be great with the heavier and faster material, but I'm skeptical about his playing in the soft spots. That's what made Lopez truly amazing.

Sleepy 09-10-2006 10:42 PM

Gah...I was so sad when Lopez left. I was lucky to have caught him live before he split.

i am the robots 09-10-2006 10:43 PM

Yeah, Lopez was mindblowingly good, I'm just sad he's gone, especially after the letdown of Ghost Reveries.

Sleepy 09-10-2006 10:45 PM

I think I'm one of the only people here who don't bash GR fervently. It wasn't as good as, say, Still Life, but I still enjoyed it.

i am the robots 09-10-2006 10:48 PM

It's got a few good songs, but I can't listen to it all the way through.

Jude 09-10-2006 11:11 PM

I like it, but not near as much as other Opeth albums. The best tracks are up there with the classics, but some of the others are quite meh.

pate 09-10-2006 11:19 PM

Twelve days until I get to hear Godhead's Lament live!!!! :)

eighty d 09-11-2006 01:27 AM
I like it, but not near as much as other Opeth albums. The best tracks are up there with the classics, but some of the others are quite meh.
I don't think there's a single song on the album that doesn't have at least one part that completely blows me away. A lot of his clean vocal lines do it.

Stoo 09-11-2006 03:10 AM

I Love Ghost Reveries.

Insipid2000 09-11-2006 03:21 AM

I love it too.

Carrionshine 09-11-2006 04:19 AM

I just got home from Gigantour.

I'm sad to report that there was no Godhead's Lament for us. Just the other 4 songs. I was actually quite surprised at how big a reaction Opeth actually got. I walked around after their set and heard a bunch of "Holy shit, I've never heard of those guys before, but they were badass".

It was quite a kick *** performance from them. Every song was flawless. I felt it was just way too short. Megadeth owned all though. Wow. Just wow.
I don't think there's a single song on the album that doesn't have at least one part that completely blows me away. A lot of his clean vocal lines do it.
For me it's the lack of interesting riffs. Also the fact that the soft songs are totally lacking that beautiful acoustic playing that used to make mellow Opeth sections so long. It seems like the guitar is just thrown in there to get the job done, on heavy sections as well as soft.

You progs wouldn't understand blackmetal.

I understand it man. It's mildly good at times.
I understand it man. It's mildly good at times.
Some of it, yes. Although I've never heard Darkthrone, so I'll reserve my judgement on that one.

RouteOne 09-11-2006 11:06 AM

I jk ITT
It's got a few good songs, but I can't listen to it all the way through.
A massive 123 on that. It's got some of Opeth's heaviest (and coolest) parts to date, but as a whole it's often painful to listen to.

I love Ghost of Perdition though. Such an amazing song.

Stoo 09-11-2006 01:11 PM

I agree with Jude. There's not enough of Opeth's trademark acoustic passages. I really like the mellow parts in the heavy songs but I feel like the full mellow songs aren't THAT amazing.

Put it this way, To Bid You Farewell is like 5 leagues above Hours Of Wealth, Isolation Years. (Even though I like them both).

I love Ghost Reveries too.

Shadows Within 09-11-2006 01:26 PM

Yeah thats a cool one, Im not a fan of there older stuff much neways.
Darkthrone isn't good.
Yes they are.

TojesDolan 09-11-2006 01:27 PM

How reiterative. :p

On a related note, I think they are going a little bit more jazz in their slower pieces, so good times.

alytee123 09-11-2006 02:00 PM
I love Ghost Reveries too.
I really like it too, though admittidly some of it feels a bit repetitive, mostly just The Grand Conjuration feels a bit long to me, but its still a great album to me. Nothing beats Still Life though, though I havent heard all of BlackWater Park yet, its on my list...

Shadows Within 09-11-2006 02:01 PM

Actually the main reason I like Ghost Reveries is because it changes alot, like Ghost Of Perdition.

TojesDolan 09-11-2006 02:06 PM

The grand conjuratio nis the only song with apparent "commercial success" purposes, and I'm almost positive it was meant to be repetitive to be catchy. Nonetheless, it is a crime to make repetitive long songs, so whatever.

I like it. I'm listening to it at the moment.

The Grand Conjuration is one of my favorite Opeth songs, I don't know why, I just love it.

It's also the song that got me into Opeth.

Shattered_Future 09-11-2006 02:22 PM

TGC is really cool. Granted, it's a bit repetitive, but then again, most of their stuff it.

TojesDolan 09-11-2006 02:40 PM

Depends on your definition of repetitive.

I don't think they are repetitive, jsut brief moments of repetition or reiteration to remind you where the song came from and where it might be going...

Except for Wreath. That song IS repetitive, but I like it for some reason.
