Ultralites are roughly half the weight of the regular counterparts. I love them.
You have a Schecter, right? Do you know what size I'm going to need? Any models you recommend?

I don't have them on my Schecter, but you're going to want the 3/8" size and not the 1/2." The satin gold should be almost exactly the same as the Schecter satin gold, so it'll look sexxxy and natural. The Y-key style are a direct drop-in.

In short: Gold 3/8 Y

Have you tried the Hipshot ultralites? Or any others?

I know Gotoh makes lites, Schaller... anything I'm missing?

I've not tried the Gotoh lites (although I wanted the Resolites. Lighter than Hipshot, come in chrome colors, and about $40 a tuner). I've heard that the Schallers are dinky and have some plastic parts. I'm not a Schaller fan, so I wouldn't bother with them.

I use the Hipshot Ultralites on two of my basses, and I had them on my Stingray before I sold it as well. They are quality and make a noticeable difference in weight. I've had many interactions with the guys at Hipshot, and they stand by their product. For the price, availability, and ease of drop-in replacement, you can do no better than the Ultralites.

Especially if you're Catholic, because your local priest will take care of that with gusto.

So we've got about 35 grams a piece for the Gotohs. 51 grams for the Hipshots.

Do you happen to know how much the stock Grovers weigh?

Rollo47 08-05-2010 11:22 AM

Just got home from the gig. Not a bad night in all, shame about the lack of crowd though.

Anyone about?

Spaceman Spiff 08-05-2010 11:31 AM

I'm going to see Maps & Atlases this Saturday. It should be pretty awesome.

I thought the tuning pegs on Schecter were Gotoh? If not, in my hands, they weigh about the same as the Gotoh GB7:

I pulled this from talkbass, and I suspect the 1/2" and 3/8" weights are inverted

HB6Y Ultralite Y Key with ½” dia 42 grams
HB6Y Ultralite Y Key with 3/8” dia 51 grams
HB6C Ultralite Clover Key with ½” dia 47 grams
HB6C Ultralite Clover Key with 3/8” dia 56 grams
Custom Shop Parts tuners 61 grams (I measured it)
Schaller M4 tuners 68 grams
Schaller BML Light Bass Tuners from Warmoth 57 grams
Gotoh GB7 tuners 64 grams
Fender Precision and Jazz Deluxe use the BT4S tuners 123 grams
Fender basses between 1966 and 1982 used the Schaller BMFL tuners 110 grams
G&L Musicman and Fender Mexican bass tuners weigh 95 grams
Because I'm not sure if the 3/8 and 1/2 numbers are mixed up, dropping from the Gotoh to the ultralites yields somewhere between 65g and 110g (~ 1/8 lb and 1/4 lb, respectively) weight difference for a typical 5-string.

The Gotoh Res-o-lites are the only tuners I've ever found lighter than the hipshots, but the 5g difference doesn't justify the price, IMO. Also, I can only find them at one place, although I've heard they occasionally come up on eBay:

No, they are Grover brand. Whatever that means.

Crapdragoon 08-06-2010 01:53 PM

anyone here ever play or own a bass with a carbon fiber neck, or a graphite neck?

how did it play/sound/hold up?

Duncster 08-06-2010 02:17 PM

My bass has a graphite neck crapd. modulus quantum 5 string. Sounds good, extremely durable, its about 5-6 years old and the neck seems completely straight to me without any past adjustments. I havent had any problems with the bass at all. Its very good for me because where I live it is a hell hole of humidity, and the graphiteness doesn't allow it to warp due to weather changes as easily (ofcourse).

Edit: it does seem to me to carry a little extra weight but I have no idea of the weight difference graphite would have. It balances well nonetheless.

Crapdragoon 08-06-2010 02:24 PM

Thanks for the reply dunc,I am interested in gettting a graphite neck for my jazz bass, there is so much fretwear on its neck and i figure it will prolly cost about the same as a re-fret as a graphite neck would cost.

fatbandit 08-06-2010 04:38 PM

If anyone's into ambient stuff, check this out. I'm sat here still listening to it, just mega chilled out. It's a deadmau5 song that's been slowed down by 800%

I'm only 15 minutes in, but it sounds like ambient movie soundtrack heaven, haha.

Also, the soundtrack for Inception is ace, if you're into that kind of thing. The whole movie soundtrack, epic strings and buildups thing.

Epidemechanical 08-08-2010 12:31 AM

chris are you ever gonna listen to my song :-(

This board is the future of message boards. Decades from now, anything that can be spoken about will have spoken on every board, till eventually only a few diehards hang on occasionally posting in the casuals, just as happens here.

A refret shouldn't cost more than about $200, and the added weight and neckdive of a graphite neck is generally undesirable.

Get a MightyMite neck. Great quality, only about $100. Way cheaper than a $400 graphite neck.

I'll have to try listening to this sometime this week when I have a few hours to throw around. I'm about to build a template for a custom OLP Stingray5 Pickguard, and then router the template, so I'm a bit busy.

Finding myself interested in the Accugroove Bill Dickens sig cab.

You know anything about it FMB?

gaslight 08-09-2010 10:25 AM

Oh god... this is probably old news but I only just saw it.

Never tried it, but I suspect it's well-voiced for lower frequencies. I wanted a 21" El Whappo Grande from Accugroove, but couldn't justify the price tag. I've heard their gear is top-notch, though.

gaslight 08-09-2010 10:39 AM

It looks pretty beasty but the El Whappo Jr is over $3000 here so the Bill Dickens must be even more I'm guessing.

fatbandit 08-09-2010 10:47 AM

I'm too lazy to research the Bill Dickens cab. Is it a full range jobby? Or more like a sub for his F# string?

gaslight 08-09-2010 10:48 AM

I'll take the typing out of the equation for you but you'll still have to make two mouse clicks.

http://accugroove.com/

fatbandit 08-09-2010 11:40 AM

Three clicks. forfuxake.

Hmm. Looks okay. Wasn't expecting it to be a 2x12... At $2000 though, I can't see it beating a Schroeder/Epi/EBS/Eden/Aguilar etc 2x12 cab. The sonic difference can't be worth that much. Love to be able to test one though.

At $2000 USD, I'd think that full-range PA cabs would be the way to go.
